  • Beautiful setting, excellent service, delicious food. Need I say more?
  • Fresh-baked rolls or bread as opposed to store-bought would be better, which is always the case, but especially here where The Mill was once a working grist mill.

“I went to The Mill expecting the worst...The reviews I was able to find on the web were not very complimentary. I'm happy to report, however, that my husband and I were very pleasantly surprised. We went on a Thursday night at 6:30. The atmosphere was relaxed and romantic. Our server was professional, courteous and helpful. The Mill itself is beautiful, with exposed stone walls. We made reservations, so were seated next to the window overlooking the water. There were perhaps ten other occupied tables. The service was excellent, neither too slow nor too rushed. We were very pleased with the food. There were warm dinner rolls with lots of butter while we waited for our appetizer. My husband ordered the Cajun prime rib that came with baked potato and vegetables. I ordered the lobster tails (2); they came with rice and vegetables and a warmed container of garlic butter. For an appetizer we had the calamari that were served battered and fried and were plentiful enough for us to share. The portions were generous. The lobster was excellent, although my husband noted that his prime rib was leaning more toward medium than medium-rare. The vegetables were perfect...not too crisp, not too soft. We were too full to order dessert. Our server brought us our bill within a few minutes of asking for it. Overall, a delightful experience in a lovely setting. We highly recommend The Mill.”

  • The building.
  • The staff.

“The food was only average. The service was terrible. Our waiter was slow and had an attitude. We also overheard a waitress loudly complaining about another waiter. We paid our bill and decided that our waiter did not deserve a tip. On the way out we could not find someone in charge to complain to. Before we got out the door, our waiter chased after us demanding to know why we did not leave a tip. We told him why and left and said we would never return. He said fine with him. My wife and I were upset for the rest of the evening.”

  • Very attractive building in a beautiful location.
  • The worst food of any restaurant I have been to in Ottawa.

“The interior design of the building as a whole is very nice. A combination of contemporary, sleek booths, tables and interior finishes mixed with the unfinished stone walls of the old mill. Tres chic. They also have an atrium with tables that juts out over the river. Regrettably, the menu turns out to be your generic prime rib house served with the usual assortment of over-buttered, boiled to death root vegetables, with nary a green leaf in sight. For an appy, my guest and I shared the only green vegetables on the menu, zucchini sticks, which came battered and deep fried and served with a vat of sour cream. For a moment I thought I was in a rural northern bar and tried to order a jug of Labette Blue. For entrees, I had the chicken breast, over-poached in white wine, smothered in a bland white sauce, covered in asparagus and cheese. My guest had garlic sauteed tiger shrimp, straight from the box, I think. The piece de la resistance came, however, when the dessert menu appeared. It was a plastic-laminated sheet with pictures of cakes, like you get in Denny's. I refused on principle to order anything, but my guest went for the tiramisu, which was a mistake. It was basically sponge cake with topping. The whole experience revived memories of my university days, not the good memories, like drinking beer with friends and seeing bands. But the bad memories of being so poor I had to eat the crap food in the residence cafeteria. The only difference was that this time I shelled out $100 instead of just $10. ”
