- Inexpensive, good food. Friendly host..
- Poor wait service, too loud, unsanitary bathrooms, uncomfortable chairs.
“I can only guess that the last two reviews were by employees.
This restaurant has changed owners a few times, and is a shadow of
its former self. Just go into the bathrooms, look around, then decide
whether you trust the rest of the staff.
During our most recent outing (it is, after all, just about the ONLY
Japanese steak house in McAllen), the cook had to leave the grill
twice in order to fetch ingredients that were suppose to have been
placed on his cart the first time. Even when all ingredients are placed
on the cart the first time, the cooks tend to look dispirited: they
prepare the food in a professional but plain manner, no longer making
any attempt to entertain as per the manner of other Japanese Steak Houses.
The chairs around the grill have sturdy arms, and are comfortable
for anyone with less than a 32 inch waist - but torture for anyone else.
The atmosphere is generally loud - there are no curtains, bamboo dividers,
or other devices to buffer the sounds generated between tables.
On the plus side, the food is generally inexpensive (much less expensive
than the typical Japanese Steak House in larger Texas cities!), and well prepared.
In the past, we've been able to special order extra stir-fried mushrooms
for only a extra few dollars.
