  • Desserts, portions, fast service, outdoor seating, price.
  • Soups, and they never have skimmed milk past 11 am.

“This is a typical, longstanding Greek diner that just set up a quite comfortable street arrangement outside, on the easternmost part of 14 Street, which is not so heavily truck-trafficked, so you won't be breathing exhaust fumes with dessert. Add the trees along the street, a breeze off the river and it's surprisingly comfortable. It's also cheap and filled with local characters who aren't yet (and may never become) charming. It's also got its complement of local proles from the Con Edison plant, a sizeable Hispanic clientele (which is interesting considering nothing on the menu is Hispanic), area school teachers for lunch, NYU grad students who live five to an apartment in university supplied market-rate housing nearby and lumpen intellectuals like me who get an endless cup of coffee as we read. Starbucks it's not, it doesn't have Wi-FI, but the food (except for the soups, which truly suck, and for no discernible reason) is okay to pretty good, the entree portions would overwhelm a wolf pack, and breakfast before 11 am is still under $5, including tip. A destination restaurant? No way. But it's great if you're local. Plus it's open 24/7. Did I mention the cheesecake? Since Peter the owner decided to go just a tad fancy, he's been selling mountain-sized portions of cheesecake that are the equal in taste of Junior's in Brooklyn. My kids think it's better than Junior's. He gets it wholesale from an Astoria bakery (where else), and it's probably the only single thing he has that rates a 10. Don't bother going if you're not in the area. But if you're in the East Village, or visiting an elderly aunt in Stuyvesant Town and want some pretty decent grub at Depression prices, it's a good bet you'll like it.”
