“Sunday July 26, 2009: we were staying at the Days Inn next to Graceland. They told us to call Marlowe's for the free pink Cadillac pick-up to their restaurant, 7:15 PM appointment. They stood us up and another couple (for 7 p.m.) waited 45 minutes. Finally went to restaurant in my own car and complained to manager; she couldn't care less and told me that is how it is when they are busy. Two Pink Cadillacs parked in lot at the time, Long line out the door. Dining area appeared dirty and cluttered with trash, decided to go elsewhere. Went to China Buffet next to Graceland where it was quiet, inexpensive and got hot steamy food right away. Returned that evening to Day's Inn and learned that Marlowe's called the Days Inn and blamed the problem on them! However, I had called the restaurant at 2 pm earlier that same day for my appointment and gave my name to a woman who advised me the time! At the hotel I learned that they favor the Heartbreak Hotel over the Days Inn when they get busy (and obviously mess up their bookings). Other guests said they waited 1-1/2 hours the night before. Forget Marlowe's! Never again!”

“I live in eastern Canada and often travel to southern California. Memphis is a long way out of the way on this trip but, I often detour (flying or driving) through Memphis just to go to the Rum Boogie Cafe. The band is the best house band I have ever seen and, is worth taking a few extra days to see. The food and service are good. The band is awesome. Just writing this (CD playing) makes me want to pack up and get to Memphis.”

“The rub on these ribs is awesome! They are served with just a little BBQ sauce on them, because the rub is so good. Priced fairly and not expensively. The sides are great, especially the corn fritters. Service is wonderful. My iced tea glass was never empty! I highly recommend this restaurant. It is about 1 mile from Graceland, so go on over after your tour and eat some of the best BBQ in Memphis!”

“We were very disappointed in the service, the waiters did act like they were doing us a favor by offering us service, it was very slow and the waiter was very abrupt unfriendly. The food arrived on time, but it was just mediocre, nothing to write home about that is for sure. You can get much better at BB King's House of Blues on Beale Street or at Neely's BBQ. The restaurant looked unclean and the rest room was filthy.”

“Heard only about this place. Went early, around 5, but not necessary, to make sure of having a seat at 8 for. Enjoyed seeing all the guitars and knowing all those artists played there. Food was great. I went for the catfish with a side of red beans/rice. My friend got the Memphis BBQ. Both were generous portions and excellent value.”

“I saw this place on Food Network on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. I guess it qualified as a dive, but the chicken looked so good. I drove from Nashville to Memphis to give it a try. The chicken was great and unusual; fried and then dipped in a sauce. The corn nuggets were great too!”

“I tell you the truth, this chicken is truly mighty fine! It is the best fried chicken I have ever put in my mouth. I do declare. I thought some of the others were good but they don't hold a candle to jack petrel. I am even seriously going to move to Memphis so I can always go there and get my chicken on Sunday afternoons.”

“Just like what mama used to cook on Sunday afternoon dinners fresh and hot and good to the last bite, good seasoning and so tender.”

“I was a weekly customer at McAlister's Poplar Plaza, until I noticed the "RACIEST" SERVICE from the employees. They wait on White customers first, and it is very noticeable! I would go there weekly until I continued to note the actions of the cashiers there. When I discussed this at work, I was shocked to note that they had experienced the same. Now, this place is noted has promoting the Race problem in MEMPHIS. Which just puts a bad taste for the food!”

“Located in East Memphis on a busy street, there is somewhat limited parking, and there is often a long line of takeout traffic in front of the restaurant. But the barbeque is well worth the inconvenience and the relatively short wait. This barbeque is so far superior to western barbeque a difference between night and day. The sauce is absolutely to-die-for.”

“The ambience was cozy as well as historic. Coupled with the six piece rhythm and blues band, it was like stepping back into the past and reliving the blues era. Prices are most moderate and the service was excellent. Since this was our first official stop for our weekend in Memphis, it definitely set the tone for the rest of our tour. I had visited another restaurant on beale ST. Back in January, but it had served partially raw chicken wings. I wanted no more of that. I definitely made the right choice when I took my party to rum boogie cafe. The only criticism I have is this it is advertised as a cafe. Actually, it is much more than that. The small dance floor also was a treat for me and my daughter. We shall return!”

“Fantastic place to eat! They have a great sushi bar and cheap, but good, lunch specials. They also have a "sushi and sake happy hour" where these items are discounted. The food is wonderful and the owners are very friendly. They make a special effort to remember who you are and what you like. I have been going there for years and it has just gotten better!”

“My favorite place in Memphis! Their chicken salad sandwich is amazing diced roasted chicken, capers, juicy ripe tomato, Dijon the best I've ever had. The breads they use for the sandwiches are fabulous, the coffee is great, the chai tea lattes to die for (with foam on top!), the hummus and bagel breakfast is delightful. Also, you have to try the butter bars. Have to. A wonderful place to study with your laptop all day. And play Scrabble. Great atmosphere!!!”

“Best all you can eat BBQ buffet today in Memphis. It was really good and the place was packed. They have a great menu and it varies somewhat their catfish and hush-puppies were great - they may be deep fried in peanut oil! Ribs both types dry/wet and pulled pork were really good - had to sample them all. BBQ chicken was tender and moist even though it was a buffet and lots of southern desserts and side dishes. Here is the skinny on what changes from day to day. Wednesday and Thursday they have Ribs, Chicken, catfish, on top of the BBQ Pork so they charge more (also had a very tender and tasty beef brisket. Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday they have BBQ pork. Monday, Wednesday and Friday they have Country Fried Steak and Wings in place of the BBQ pork and ribs. The Catfish & BBQ chicken is offered every day.”

“This other guy is a moron. This place has the best dry ribs in Memphis. Polly a northerner that has no idea how to make a decent pork rib. Atmosphere is fun. Food is incredible. The service is really awesome too. They are fast and they are doing you a favor by bringing you their awesome ribs. This other guy drolly went in there with an attitude or is racist because all of the staff is African American.”

“This place must be has been, simply horrific damage to pork ribs. The staff acted as if they were doing you a favor to wait on you, this place must be living off of reputation because the card board like ribs had no meat on them, and the service was indifferent, plus the frigged place is located in an alley.”

Rendezvous “I was raised around Memphis and since leaving in 1985 I have yet found any where that has ribs that can top theirs. I recently returned for my high school reunion and could not wiat to get to the Rendezous and taste home again. My wife, who is from Michigan, tried them for the first time and now understands why I have always used Rendevous ribs as the standard ribs should be held to.”

“Let me tell you. This place is great. The service is good and the food is top notch. BUT, be careful. After you down that ceasar salad, some red wine and then that huge filet, you are going to be feeling bad..So, better get this to go and eat it on the toilet. This is my recommendation.....”

“My first visit was June 28th,2005. We were there for breakfast before our trip back to Illinois. I loved the old atmosphere and food and also seeing the booth where Elvis Presley sat ! ! I've been to Memphis 6 times and never knew about the place ! Found it on computer and saw it while visiting Lorraine Motel. I also bought a t-shirt. I will definitely go back when I am back there ! ! Thanks guys !”

“My husband and I took some business guests to dinner. I was embarrassed when we left. The ribs were not good, they came with little or no sides, we all left still hungry and dissatisfied. The guests even commented later that we should have gone to the Blues City Cafe. I don't know why this establishment is doing so well. There evidently are alot of people that have never had a good meal. I would not and am not recommending anyone to the Rendezvous.

“This is the best place to get ribs anywhere. They are absolutely amazing. The bbq sandwiches are also amazing. Because the food is so good, it is often very crowded, but that is all part of the fun. There are many antiques and pictures that line the walls, adding to the cozy atmosphere here.”
