User Reviews for San Antonio Restaurants« Go back to Strasburg Travel GuideResearch User Reviews for San Antonio (1-20 of 87)Benny's Bagels
“It's tough finding a good bagel in San Antonio. Benny's comes closest; they're tough and chewy and definitely hand made as a good bagel should be. The only complaint is that the hand-makers must not be very experienced because their shape is very irregular; hard to slice for the toaster. They're still 'way better than the soft no-character offerings elsewhere. Maybe Tooties can get some good shapers there.”

“The cook has been in San Antonio for long, needs to go to South Louisiana and eat some real Cajun food. As far as atmosphere goes, there are a number of restaurants in San Antonio with more Cajun atmosphere.”

“First time and definitely not the last. Noticed the parking lot full. Then went back on a Saturday, it was even more packed. Good indicator. The food was reasonably priced. It was delicious. The place seems to be packed with regulars they all seemed to know the waitresses by name. The owner was busing tables. He was friendly. You do however have to wait in line at the register to pay.”

“This is a so called Irish pub? Where are the traditional Irish songs? Instead they subject you to raunchy twists on popular sing-a-long songs. The piano guy makes tasteless jokes at his audiences expense. I am shocked and dumbfounded that Hilton puts their name to this. I thought the Hilton Group had more taste than this. Leave this type of show to an association that we would expect it from not the Hilton Group.”

“We love the idea of a piano pub. Just be careful of when you visit. We have visited several times a year for the past 10 years. In the early years the piano players didn't change much. It seems over the past three years they keep changing piano players (makes you wonder why?).”

“My wife and I found the place while lost on a walk downtown - what a find! The service was excellent, the food was great, and it wasn't pricey. Our server, should work for the Tourism Board - she told us of all the wonderful things to do and see, most we hadn't even heard of. The Ghost Hunt was a wonderful suggestion, just as her food suggestions were. Thank you to the staff for providing us with a great meal and good company!”

“Don't waste your money. It was 8:15 pm and no dinner customers came in after us. He failed to give us menus which we waited for, for 15 minutes. We order a nice bottle of wine and were brought the incorrect vintage waited another 10 minutes then offer a substitute year by a friendly albeit inexperienced wine steward. Food was adequate but evening ruined our tab. Easy to see why this place was empty and our meal at Biga on the Banks on Friday was half the cost and twice the value. Owners better take a close look at operations here. Certainly would never consider for one of our groups or special occasion. What a shame a pretty little place that stakes its reputation on local ownership, but no owners to be found when we had issues even calling four days later staff wouldn't give out names of owners, obviously no pride in ownership or someone is hiding something maybe was once a good restaurant no more.”

“I've been eating at Rolando's (South Side location) since the late 80's. The more popular restaurants have nothing on Rolando's. You haven't had authentic until you've had Rolando's. Unless you go to Mexico. On top of the great food. The have revived excellent review on health inspections and have received a few Blue Plate Awards. If that's not enough to get you to stop by, then you are not looking for great food.”

“We recently were visiting San Antonio from out of town and ate at this place on 2 different days - both times the same meals: 4 tacos & 2 coffees. This restaurant doesn't supply a detailed receipt, it's a bit difficult to stand there and argue with the math genius they hire to work the cash register. By the way, this was the 2nd time this restaurant has shortchanged us - we dismissed the 1st time as a human error, but with it happening a 2nd time, it appears to be some sort of regular occurrence. Plenty of other honest restaurants in San Antonio, so I urge you to stay away from this one!”

“Great food, service was a little slow but only because the got slammed due to a favorable review in the newspaper the day before. Overall, a great little restaurant.”

“Nicha's was recommended to my wife and me by local folks. We were disappointed in the food. I had an enchilada plate and the cheese was a mild American cheese almost like Velveeta. Velveeta has it's place but not on enchiladas. The salsa was much too mild, no spirit. If you're a Mexican food aficionado you will skip Nicha's.”

“Took forever for the chef to come out almost an hour and 20 minutes then when he came out, it was if I hadn't waited at all. He was entertaining and food was delicious, I think he said he was the dish washer which I found very funny I've been there a few times. The best chef there, would be the youngest one because I believe the other 3 or 4 were older ones they looked kind of burnt out.”

“This place is horrible and disgusting. Its dirty and the food isn't good. It took about 20 minutes for the server to take our order, and the restaurant wasn't busy mind you. It was dirty and extremely small. The steak wasn't seasoned at all and tasted a little sour.”

“I used to love going to this place. Back when the restaurant name was Bambino Hueys, the place was great, the food was amazing, and the service was good. Now its been sold to someone else (renamed to Boccones). I have noticed this place getting worse and worse every chance I get to go there. Menu changes, recipe changes, bad service. It's really sad to see so many changes to a restaurant that used to be the most amazing Italian restaurant in town.”

“This is a great date restaurant. Parking can be a challenge, and you should be prepared for a wait. They have a nice waiting area with plenty of seating. There is a bar right next to the hostess stand, so you can have a margarita while you wait. My favorite is the sangria margarita, very good! The food is good, not the best I've ever had, but very good and the atmosphere is wonderful!”

“My adult daughter and I were in San Antonio for the weekend and happened upon Nichas while touring the local Missions. We figured it had to be good, with all the cars in the lot- it was packed! But we were seated within 5 minutes and the food was at our table within 5-10 minutes of ordering. I had Fajita Fiesta large chunks of grilled chicken in a tortilla, topped with cheese sauce. It also came with rice and some kind of seasoned beans in a bowl- not refried beans, but almost like a bean soup. It was all delicious. We took the extra tortillas back to the hotel and ate them the next morning for breakfast. They were sublime. Thick, a bit chewy ever so slightly sweet.”

“Some co-workers and I had drinks at Mad Dogs on a week night. Besides the slow service, we had a good time until it was time to leave. Guy #1 paid cash ($100+) for several rounds of drinks during the evening. There were several other rounds of drinks that everyone was going to split. When the final bill came, it showed that none of the drinks had been paid for the whole night. We first questioned the waitress. Her only comment was that the bill was correct. She then walked away not to be seen again. Our next step was to talk to the manager. His response was that he was not able to show what our table had ordered throughout the evening. Since we did not have a receipt for the previous drinks that were purchased, there was nothing we could prove.....In the end, we paid the bill to the exact amount and left. (The waitress already decided to take her own $100+ tip.) I mentioned to the manager that I would appropriately review Mad Dog's on all of the popular travel websites.....Be sure to ask for a receipt if paying with cash. I would also ask for a receipt with each round of drinks if running a tab.”

“I am sorry and ashamed to admit that I worked at Ruthie's Mexican Restaurant, but after two weeks, I couldn't take it anymore, I had to quit. Aside from than the fact that the owner and his sister (who runs the location on Eckert and Bandera by Cafe Milano and New Asia) are the rudest and cheapest people that I have ever worked for, they are also discriminating and prejudice thieves. They regularly overcharged customers without explaining what the extra charges were for and regularly re-used food. The cooks do not wash their hands and sits at a table watching TV all day while her employees are left to scramble around and attend to the entire restaurant, even if it is full of customers, alone. I honestly do not understand how they have remained in business for so long. At the end of the day, there is no cleaning up, they simply pack up whatever leftovers they want to take home and leave the restaurant in a wreck for the waitresses to clean up the next day. If you ever go in Ruthie's, look around you, look at the floor, the tables, the walls, look at the disgusting condition of the bathrooms, and know that you are taking the chance of getting sick every time you return.”

“My dad took me to capparelli pizza when I was 10 years old. I have been going ever since then. I am 42 now. The food has never changed, still the same. Now I bring my kids there. They love it. Service is a little slow, but well worth the wait. Try the meatball sandwich, unbelievable. You will never find another anywhere. Sometimes they have entertainment. Very good.”

“After the treatment given to 2 Blind Patrons this place should close down in 1 week from having no customers. At least then every one who goes there will be treated the same and be assured that their orders are correct without argument from the staff and ownership. In other words if this place does not exist, as it won't in a month or 2 it will not be missed.”

“Ordered the most ordered plate on menu. Avocado salad was over ripe, tamal was either past due or not cooked. Cheese dip was cold, enchilada had no flavor. Makes me wonder what I ate. Don't believe what the menu says about the home made tortillas. Store bought and heated. .”

“A restaurant off of Broadway in an old farmhouse, with talented chefs that create beautiful and delicious food and a nice wine list. Amazing seafood, perfect steaks, and pate to die for! This place is run beautifully, by owners, chefs, managers and servers who love what they do. If weather permits, the outside patio is the best place to sit, especially with children. There is an unprinted children's menu of grilled cheese, hamburgers, fried shrimp or chicken strips with handout fries. One of San Antonios best restaurants by far.”

“I ate a late lunch at this hidden neighborhood restaurant and had a great time. We were led through a menu that had many great choices. The grilled portabella appetizer was awesome, and a brick pressed chicken proved to be the perfect recommendation. Our server also recommended lemon flavored ravioli which we declined but notice that a couple near us both ordered this item which has me wanting to return and try it. At first I thought the prices were high, but when our food arrived I thought it was a good value. The server was attentive throughout the meal and even brought out a complimentary dessert because we mentioned that it was our first time visiting. I will be back when I am on that side of town.”

“After reading the reviews (i.e. Critic's choice for best enchiladas 2006) I decided to give it a try with 2 friends. The critics were right. The enchilada plates are great and they give you a wide variety to choose from. There are 6-7 different sauces to choose from and you can choose from beef, cheese, chicken enchiladas. With the first bite "freshness" comes to your mind. The sauces are extremely tasty yet they are not thick or heavy. One person in our party tried the tortilla soup. She said it was the best tortilla soup she ever had (and she's an expert on tortilla soup). There was quite a bit of chicken in the soup. When the weather is nice there is a great outside seating area. I'm looking forward to going back and trying another different enchilada plate.”

“I will be moving to Tallahassee, Florida in a few months and a Taco Cabana restaurant would fit perfectly there. There are is Fla. State University with over 35,000 students and Fla. A and M university with about 25,000 students not to mention the state Capitol is also in Tally with a city of over 500,000 your type of food would be so wonderful for the residents. It is a beautiful city and it would be so much better if you opened up a few restaurants there. Wow! I cannot even imagine, especially on Friday and Saturdays after classes and after games. Margarita's and Beer sales would be of the charts. Thanks for listening and please let me know your consideration in this matter. Absolutely a huge money make for your company. Thank you. Mary keep in touch please.”

“Well first off I have been eating ruche¿s food for 2 years now. Every weekend my family will order in some breakfast. I don't know if they are under new management, but this new guy is horrible. This morning I called in an order as usual. I go and pick it up, to realize that my whole order is wrong. Potatoes and egg instead of carne guised, bean and cheese instead of bacon and egg. Clearly the wrong order. Well according to the manager, who would not give me his Name refused to admit he had bagged it incorrectly (when he insured me he was the one to bag it). He accused me of being a liar. I have never been told that I was lying about my food being incorrect. He read the ticket back to me and said that is what he had put in the bag. And that he was sorry if a taco fell out. What>? I still wanted my food; I have children who were expecting their morning tacos. But never in my life had I been treated so rudely. To add further annoyance he had the nerve to threaten to refuse my service. So sorry to say, but I can no longer order from ruche¿s until new management has taken over. It is completely uncalled for a manager (of all people) to treat a paying faithful customer that way. I am shocked, and expect more out of a busy restaurant.”
