User Reviews for Charleston Restaurants« Go back to Iowa HotelsResearch User Reviews for Charleston (1-20 of 33)Robert's Barbecue
“Visited the Robert's BBQ on Rivers Ave. The place is very run down with lots of duct tape patching holes on the booths. Our order consisted of a rib plate and a BBQ plate. Both with hash, one with potato salad, and one with onion rings. First the meats. The ribs looked to be baked. They didn't really look boiled, but they may have been. I say baked as they were undercoked. Most boiled ribs fall off the bone (overcooked) and these were not like that at all. You could hardly bite through the meat they were so tough. There was absolutely no flavor except for the mustard based sauce slathered on top. The ribs were not seasoned at all. The BBQ I had was much the same. Baked in an oven and not seasoned except for that mustard sauce. This was some of the worst BBQ I've experienced in the SC Lowcountry. The hash & rice was only saving grace. It wasn't bad. The potato salad was obviously store bought and bland. The onion rings were the regular Charleston-style rings that several BBQ restaurants in the area serve. By Charleston style I mean over breaded and under onioned. There was a tiny little sliver of an onion ring surrounded by a batter that can only be described as hush puppy like. The rings are all bread and little onion (just like at all the Bessinger's places). I would not recommend anyone to visit Robert's for BBQ.”

“We visited for brunch which was busy, but we got seated right away. Lots of good food, but this place seems to like to put cheese on everything. I ordered the shrimp and grits. In retrospect, I wish I had waited and gotten it somewhere without so much cheese. Friendly waitress, good people watching, nice outdoor patio. Several folks with babies/ small children. Look for coupons around town for this place.”

“Attractive decor in a historic home. The night we visited, my companion ordered the grilled porch chop on the recommendation of the waiter. The very thick chop was pink and raw looking in the middle. After we pointed that out they took it away and brought another one. It wasn't done right either. I ordered gumbo and a crab cake. Both were delicious. After we asked they comped the under done dinner cheerfully, but didn't offer to do it.”

“On the night we visited, getting our food seemed to take a while. Servers were attentive however. Oysters on the half shell were fresh and delicious. My salad came out without the cheese described on the menu. No compensation was offered. Still, we had a coupon so we did okay. Server brought me a small taste of a local beer before I ordered. That was nice. Much of the seating is outdoors and there's a patio for people watching.”

“New renovations are great! The food is excellent and they have a great quality product. Everything is fresh and the pizzas are stone baked, not like a processed large quantity style fast food establishment. Not only are their pizzas and calzones wonderful, so are their subs and salads. If you haven't had it, it is worth your time to try it!”

“Don't go on a Wednesday during lunch - only had one waitress working and she was slaw - waited 45 minutes for our order before walking out without being served any food.”

“My husband and I were so excited and were sorely disappointed. My appetizer - fried oysters - was bland, boring, no flavor, too greasy. My entree - rabbit wrapped in proscuitto- was so incredibly salty, I couldn't finish but one piece. The greens with black eyed peas that came with it were good, but they couldn't make up for the rest. Would not recommend, particularly for the prices.”

“Awesome! Best New York Pizza in Charleston. But this place is so much more than a pizzeria. They have subs, salads, pastas, appetizers, desserts, wraps, and much more. They have a signature appetizer called Baroni Rolls that are a must. It's like a piece of pepperoni pizza rolled up, deep-fried, and served with a side of sauce. Baroni's is a god-send to anyone from the North looking for a taste of home here in the South. You won't be disappointed. But, if you are, they have a money-back guarantee. I've never had to use it, but it makes me feel warm and fuzzy knowing it's there. Enjoy!”

“I went into Piccadilly Restaurant on Mall Drive in N. Charleston, SC on Saturday, July 19, 2008 at approximately 5:00 pm for dinner. While in the serving line I asked the server what type of stuffed fish that was offered on the menu. The server said that the stuffed fish was Tilapia. I ordered the stuffed (Tilapia) along with Macaroni and Broccoli, a wheat roll, sweet tea and water. I took one bite of the stuffed fish and began to feel strange. I thought that I was just tired from shopping. After taking a second bite, my face got flushed and began to tighten. I then immediately went to the cashier to inquire as to they type of fish that was stuffed. The cashier said that it was Talapia. However, the lady from the kitchen stated that they were out of Talapia and used cat fish for the stuffed fish. Problem? I am allergic to cat fish. As my symptoms worsened I pleaded with the workers to find the manager so that I could pay my ticket and leave so that I could get some medication in my system. The manager came and changed the ticket taking off the price of the fish. This could have been a potentially fatal situation. If there is a change in the menu item, it is the restaurant's responsibility to make the public and the servers aware as to the menu change from tilapia to cat fish. My family and I have been patrons of that particular restaurant for years.”

“For my birthday dinner on our vacation, I couldn't decide between Seafood or Steak, so we went to T-Bones Gill and Grill. My blackened scallops were unseasoned, my medium steak was well done and once our food came, our server was like a famous Charleston ghost, she disappeared! I am an eater. I couldn't finish this steak and that my friends is a first!”

“Ok, so maybe it was an "off" day, but we arrived just before 7pm and placed our orders with our non-English speaking waitress. She brought us our drinks, then seemed to forget about us for about 15 minutes. When she came back we placed our orders (this is advertised as a grill & seafood place, though the menu is quite limited on seafood & the cost is high, we had already been seated and figured we'd give it a go anyway) she took another 10 minutes before bringing our soups. Then after we finished the soup, she waited 10 more minutes before bringing out our salads. Now, this is all fine until she had stopped by for the 2nd time since picking up our salads and said "3 or 4 more minutes" on our meals. Sign after an hour of being there we still hadn't gotten our food. Finally at 8:05 (a full hour & 15 minutes after arriving) we decided to leave but couldn't find our waitress. We went to the front desk and politely explained that not only had we been there waiting on our food for an hour, but that we watched 2 other tables (one was a party of eight) get seated after us & be served before us & my boyfriend handed the manager a $20 to cover the soup, salad & drinks and we left. Oh, and please don't get me started on the Greek music that consisted of one very long song that just placed over and over!”

“We went to Poogan's Porch for brunch. There were a lot of great choices on the menu. I went out on a limb and chose a crab cake omelet, and I really enjoyed it. Everything we ordered was great.”

“My husband and I are from the Charleston area. We recently celebrated his birthday at Fulton five in Charleston. This restaurant has got to be one of the finest establishments in all of downtown. Usually when you go to one of those fancy places, you expect to get servings the size of a half-dollar and walk away feeling hungry. This is not the case at Fulton five. Here are my compliments: the food is fantastic (we had filet mignon and it was a sizable filet and pan seared red snapper.) Yum! Generous portions. There was no "room" for dessert, but the desserts here are spectacular. Prompt, knowledgeable, accommodating service. Romantic ambiance. Cozy and "Charlestony". Hooray for free parking (if you arrive early enough.) reality check: entrees range from $25 and up so bring the credit card! But it is so worth it. I wish they would launch a website, so you could see for yourself. So, whether you are an "in-Towner" or "out-of-towner", make a reservation at Fulton five. You won't be disappointed.”

“Great food for the price. A real family restaurant. I took one of the Taiwanese sailors I was working with. He had 5 pieces of their corn bread before the meal even came! He left and was so full! Got to get there early for lunch or you'll be waiting on a table. It's like everyone knows everyone and if you go more than a few times, you're part of the 'family.'”

“My family and I enjoyed dinner at Bocci's while vacationing in the Charleston area. We enjoyed it very much. The house salad was wonderful and very unique in how it was presented. My son had pizza, I had spaghetti and meatballs, and my wife had the seafood pasta with scallops. It was overall a very enjoyable experience.”

“Was served cold French fries and onion ring. Returned to complain and told the items were hot. They took the items and stated they would put more on in 5 minutes and would bring them to the table. Never did. Complained to someone behind the counter and received a blank look. Use to be a great place but the youngsters must have taken over.”

“Took my family to hymans in Charleston on a Mon. Evening in Oct. We were put on the waiting list and told we'd have a 30 min. Wait, an hour or so later, we finally got our table. Keep in mind, not crowded. Food arrives an hour plus later. Wife's fish cold and inedible, kids got hot dogs but fries arrived another 10 min. Later. My crispy flounder was good though. We won't go back. Service very bad”

“Very small place cramped eating area, but sandwiches and wraps are great for downtown workers. Very busy at lunch due to close prox. to court house and law offices. Lawyers like those quick fast lunches. Line can be very long due to made to order sandwiches. Daily specials are great.”

“I didn't rate the food because I never got that far at my visit to Dianas. So that I wont take up all of this space with my complaints, I will summarize. I have never visited a restaurant with a more rude manager and clueless owner in my life. The rest of the waitstaff seemed nice. I'm sure the food is pretty decent. My experience was horrible. My party was told that pancakes were not available after 11:30 because the "cooks didn't feel like making them." I thought it was a joke. Keep in mind, we were told BY THE MANAGER that breakfast is served all day. The manager told me she has been trying to find a new job b/c she has lost control of her kitchen. I would have felt a little sorry for her if she wasn't so rude and unhelpful. She said she didn't know why, but the cooks get mad when they have to make pancakes and will walk out if asked to. She said omelets and french toast were available, though. WHAT???!! I almost thought I was on a show like "candid camera". It was that unbelievable. The owner was pretty clueless and just kept asking how he could "make this right" He said he didn't know what she was talking about, that they do in fact serve pancakes after ll:30. After leaving, we went to another restaurant for breakfast and told them our story. They laughed and said that we should have never tried the place b/c they have been hearing how terrible Dianas is lately. Being a local, I have been sharing my story to many friends who just can believe how we were treated, but who say they have heard bad things about Dianas. I hate that I wasted a beautiful Sunday morning on such a hellhole of a place.”

“I've only been here for breakfast - but several times. One of the best breakfasts you will ever eat! Everything fresh and tasty. I don't even know if they are open for lunch or dinner, but I imagine it would be just as good. They employees all seem enthusiastic and happy to be there.”
