Dinics Beef & Pork House
Nov 6, 2007 by Gerry from Philadalphia

Overall Rating: 10 User Rating Score: 10
Food:[10] • Service:[10] • Atmosphere:[6]

  • They don't skimp on the meat. Its hard to eat the whole sandwich.
  • Would be nice to have something besides chips to go with your sandwich.

“Nothing fancy here as Dynics is found in the reading terminal market in Philly. However the food is great! This is basically a lunch only establishment with a counter and a take out section. They serve roast beef, roast pork, pulled pork and Italian sausage on a roll but they are mostly known for the pork. Get there before noon or the line will probably be long.”

Jazz & Java

Overall Rating: 10 User Rating Score: 10
Food:[9] • Service:[10] • Atmosphere:[10]

  • The employees are very kind to me every time I visit the airport location.
  • Customers always comparing them to star bucks when they are 2 different stores.

“The employees at the jazz n java in the Philadelphia international airport are very friendly. They have the best Espresso your money can buy. I believe the employees are very patient and they always seem like they are having a good time. I think thats the best work atmosphere, to have fun while you work. I've seen many of the employees keep their cool under pressure, and believe me customers are stressful when they need not be. I actually heard someone say "if you change your blend of coffee I will never come back here." wow huh? I believe that jazz and java is the best coffee shop in Philadelphia. I think they should open more shops outside of Philly. As a matter of fact I am from the east cost and I go to the west coast often, and you know how much people drink coffee on the west coast. A lot! I believe they would do great business. .”

Freddy & Tony's Restaurant
Oct 26, 2007 by Kate from Philly

Overall Rating: 10 User Rating Score: 10
Food:[10] • Service:[9] • Atmosphere:[9]

  • Servings size generous, food is delicious!
  • Can get a little loud inside.

“Staff serves wonderful, tasty, home cooked Puerto Rican food, just like it's supposed to be. The portion sizes are very generous, the food is absolutely delicious whether you eat there or choose takeout. We always eat in but orders take out for the way home so we have even more leftovers for the next day. My husband (a Puerto Rican direct from the island) loves the Morongo; it is spicy but not too much. I can't get enough of the pastels, to stones (fried plantains) and Carne Asada. The waitresses are very sweet and speak both Spanish and English (which helps since my Spanish isn't too great). The food reminds me of my mother in law's home cooking and makes me miss Puerto Rico very much. A great place to eat!”

Jet Rock Bar & Grill
Oct 8, 2007 by Greg from Turnersville, NJ

Overall Rating: 1 User Rating Score: 1
Food:[1] • Service:[1] • Atmosphere:[1]

  • Beer is usually slightly colder than warm.
  • Wait staff, food, pretty much as hostile as having a beer at your ex wife's place.

“I read the other bad reviews and thought we must have all been there on the same night. I travel quite a bit and regrettably they are the pretty much only choice if you want a drink (beer) and the only reason they stay open. Wait staff is rude and angry. I had the same experience as the reviewer who sat at a table and was ignored until I went the bar and was ignored some more and finally told there was no table service. They tried to add gratuity and I made them take it off of the bill, which the bartender would not do at first until I threatened to get a cop. Food is uniformly horrible. Only reason to go there is to grab a beer at the bar, slug it down and wait until you arrive elsewhere to eat.”

Overall Rating: 10 User Rating Score: 10
Food:[10] • Service:[10] • Atmosphere:[10]

  • Authentic Philly cheese steak; chicken cheese steak too; off the hook!
  • Parking.

“I was headed to Geno's with some other "tourists" for the "Philly" cheese steak" experience when I had to stop up by St. Joe's for directions; they true Philadelphian behind the counter at the Hess station said "I know you aren't going to Geno's for a sandwich" and I said "well." I asked about Jim's and she knew I knew the area and immediately said "Ishkabibbles". Let me tell you. Worth driving back to Philly for the sandwich. Authentic and worth the parking headache.”

Mcmenamins Tavern
Sep 9, 2007 by Susie from Philadelphia

Overall Rating: 8 User Rating Score: 8
Food:[9] • Service:[7] • Atmosphere:[8]

  • I just love their soups.
  • The service could be a little faster. If you're in a hurry, tell your waitperson.

“Mcmenamin's is a local tavern in one of Philadelphias most bohemian neighborhoods. The pub-style food is excellent. The soups are famous, and the salads are always fresh and flavorful. Plus, it's cheap - something dear to my heart. If it's warm enough, the outside patio is nice and a lot quieter than the bar. I always see lots of families in here, even those with tiny babies. This funky little place is a real gem, especially considering its proximity to the much pricier chestnut hill neighborhood. Chestnut hill has much tinier restaurants that cost a lot more and deliver a lot less for the money.”

Aramingo Diner Inc
Aug 4, 2007 by Peg from Philadelphia

Overall Rating: 1 User Rating Score: 1
Food:[6] • Service:[1] • Atmosphere:[1]

  • Once the order was corrected twice, the food was fine.
  • The manager proceeded to call my daughter several names because she wanted a bill adjustment due to poor service.

“I have been going to the diner for decades. I have never had a problem with the diner before but on a recent visit, I was very disappointed. My daughter took me, her sister, and my 2 granddaughters out for breakfast as a special treat. Although our visit started out fine, it soon became very evident that we were not welcome. Two of our orders were wrong and we were given a rotted pickle. The manager agreed that the order was not what we wanted and did replace it. However, we were very put out time wise and when we realized that the second order was wrong, we received a little bit of an attitude from the waitress. By then, most of us were done eating and we asked for box for the second corrected order. The waitress attitude increased and because she had volunteered to take over our table when our original waiter left for the day, it was as if we were bothering her. I have lived in the neighborhood for more years than I can count and have always enjoyed my visits to the diner. Once we were ready to go, my daughter who was paying, wanted a bill adjustment due to the inconvenience. This is not uncommon in any restaurant, but the manager decided to accuse my daughter of not wanting to pay. He proceeded to call her names and told her to pay the entire bill or not come back. She chose to leave. He starts yelling about calling the cops, who we waited for but never showed up. My point is that this man continued to insult my daughter and when I called him on it, he dismissed me. The last I checked, the customer is always right, especially a customer of at least 30 years or so. He has succeeded in losing not only my family as customers, but as many others as I can get hold of. By the way, my entire is in excess of 100 people. This is not over and I will continue to pursue this matter with the owner and the better business bureau. By the way, my daughter did pay the bill although the cops never showed up. This tells me that the manager, who continued to rant and rave after the fact, is not only an ignorant, ill mannered individual, but he is also a liar. We waited for quite some time before leaving. This is not a place where I want my family to spend their hard earned money.”

Downeys Drnking Hse Dning Slon
Jul 6, 2007 by Carilla from NY

Overall Rating: 1 User Rating Score: 1
Food:[4] • Service:[2] • Atmosphere:[2]

  • The band that played upstairs was fantastic!
  • Too bad there were no servers upstairs when the band played! Hostess was clueless & no help. Food took forever to arrive. Servers were alerted to smokers outside open dining room windows & did nothing.

“Traveling from out of town, made a reservation two weeks before trip, to meet family coming from VA. Was very specific to request a table upstairs, where the band was playing. Called at least 5 times to be sure all was confirmed because we had elderly relatives coming who couldn't stand around & wait for a table. We had to wait, & were told there was no place to sit upstairs (there is actually a large dining area & outdoor seating), then another patron was told that upstairs there was a $30 minimum, per person. While trying to get an answer from the hostess, on our table, a patron interrupted & demanded to see the manager, to complain about the service. Things were being run so poorly that I'm surprised we ever got to sit down. Food took almost an hour to arrive, & it was expensive. We had a 7 pm reservation, & never ate until 8:45. The only good thing about the place was the bland, and the hostess came upstairs to tell them to turn it down. Sheesh! Do not go to Downey's.”

1818 Market Marathon Grill
Jun 30, 2007 by Knowzbetter

Overall Rating: 7 User Rating Score: 7

  • People work very hard and are extremely dedicated.
  • Other customers often expect too much.

“Upon reading reviews from others that have been posted here, I am compelled to add a comment of my own. I'm a hard-working employee of marathon grill, and I feel the need to point out some things: 1. A number of these negative reviews are from out-of-towners. It isn't the atmosphere of the restaurant you aren't used to, it's the city. You probably are small-town and when you don't get every "please" and "thank you" you cry about it. Our owners are in our restaurants daily, and work hard. No job is too big or small for them to carry out themselves; they keep themselves very much involved in daily operations. Furthermore, they are only three people running a multi-million dollar, 7-location chain.”

You Zen Japanese Restaurant
May 4, 2007 by Pat from Philadelphia

Overall Rating: 9 User Rating Score: 9
Food:[9] • Service:[9] • Atmosphere:[8]

  • Excellent fish and generous portions.
  • Too much take-out business!

“I've lived in the area for many years and also in Japan. Despite its relatively small Japanese population Philadelphia has some excellent authentic sushi restaurants, and you Zen is definitely one of the very best. The fish is selected by one of the owners (I've seen him doing it at 4:00 am) from both Philadelphia's fish market and nick and is always excellent. In my experience this place is an excellent value, with very generous slices of succulent fish on their sushi and a variety of flavorful cooked dishes from the kitchen. Dining room decor is dated but authentic, however I prefer the sushi bar - the twin brother owners are very entertaining, often arguing over who is older! It doesn't see the American patronage of some of Philly's better-known Japanese restaurants, but most Japanese in the area are regulars, and in my opinion that's all I need to know!”

Overall Rating: 6 User Rating Score: 6
Food:[6] • Service:[4] • Atmosphere:[6]

  • The wine was good.
  • Long wait, bad service, less than memorable food.

“Vestry was the most disappointing dining experience I have ever had. My husband and I had read all of the glowing reviews Ned made reservations well in advance to dine at vestry¿s during a recent trip to Philadelphia. We had to wait for almost 1 hour for our table only to be shocked at the menu. The menu choices were limited and unless one is excited about veal kidneys, tripe or octopus, forget it. Until the waiter gave us additional options with the specials, I could find almost nothing appetizing. I hoped for spectacular service at such a touted eatery, but there was so much lag time between the appetizer and the entree, I thought our order had been lost. So, we spent a fortune for me to eat fettucinethat took forever to reach the table! After a less than memorable entree, I prepared to be wowed by the desserts. Unfortunately, the desserts were no better than any chain restaurant. And to add insult to injury, the chef stopped and chatted with every table around ours, but never even spoke to us. How vestry¿s has captured its reputation leaves me totally puzzled. I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone under any circumstance!”

  • I liked the dark wood and the beer selection.
  • Too many options!

“We came into the restaurant at 5:45 on a wed after our historic hour of Philly. There were 5 of us and we got seated immediately in a comfy round booth. The menu was extensive and I wasn¿t sure what to order. Decisions! We ended up sharing a few things, Sheppard¿s pie, fish and chips, some burrito platter, hot wings, and a salad. Everything was delicious (fish and chips were my fad) and our server was friendly. He recommended the homemade chocolate cake (we got that too! - yummy) and also gave us enough space to enjoy ourselves. We also ordered beers - they have a huge list. I got abbey de life on draft! The place got pretty busy while we were there. It seems like we got there at the right time. If I lived in the area I would make this place a regular stop for me. Happy traveling!”

  • Good food.
  • Slow service.

“Drove by the restaurant location on Sunday, 4/22/07 and it appears to have closed. I called the telephone number listed and it's been disconnected and no further information is available. A sign in the window indicated a new restaurant may be coming there in the future. Vitale's did have good food but the service had been on the slow side. In recent years, though, the quality of the food had declined a little. Most people don't mind waiting a little for their order if it's good.”

“An all around great place. I've been going here at least twice a month for the past two years (my boyfriend has been a regular for much longer) and it never gets old. In fact, I look forward to the days that we go. Go more than once, and you're bound to see some of the same faces. Stick with the wings and the logs and you will never be disappointed just don't ask to have your wings cooked a specific way and don't ever ask for French fries! This is real Philadelphia; a little dingy, a little dirty, a little crowded, but you keep coming back.”

  • The service is fantastic and part of its charm.
  • The filet is hit or miss here but not bad for Italian.

“The food is pretty good here, however I am a steak man and this is primarily an Italian cuisine restaurant. I've been here several times so they must be doing something right. I really loved the lobster ravioli with Italian bread. My wife always enjoys her meals and she has tried a variety of their specialties. The atmosphere is romantic and wait staff are phenomenal. I particularly enjoyed the "part of the family" feel we received when we were there. Derek and Donna were terrific. The meals were reasonably priced, and I don't mind paying a little extra for ambience and good service. I certainly felt I had received my money's worth. I also enjoyed the dance club upstairs. Not a bad alternative to center city and no problem with parking.”

“I have been frequenting this bar/restaurant fro almost 5 yrs now. Last night I went there as I wanted to listen to some good music. I am a service member who is leaving for Afghanistan in five days. I walked up to the DJ and asked him to play something good as I was leaving soon. I got told, that his music was good and TO DEAL WITH IT. Every place I go to and people find out that they are talking to service members, I get nothing but love, best wishes and blessings. It was so disappointing to go to my native restraurant and get treated this way. I will never go back and rest of my friends will not either. I will make sure that I pass a mail to all the service members and Indians alike. I was sad to see the lack of customer service and the blatant disrespect for the uniform I wear with so much pride.”

“I have wanted to visit one of the Ruth¿s Chris steak house locations for awhile because I¿d heard a lot of good things. The meals are fairly pricey, but for a quality steak, not unreasonable. The steak I ordered was very tender and flavorful, but I could only eat about 1/2 so took the other 1/2 home. Imagine my surprise when the second half turned out to be 96% fat. There was a very thin layer of meat along the cut line, but the remainder was nothing but fat. I won't be returning.”

“This establishment is one of the finest restaurants out there. I had the new York strip which was second to none. Having eaten at the best steakhouses in the country, this was one unbelievable steak. All natural, stamped slab of steak, done wonderfully with great side sauces to your choosing. The chicken livers are to die for. My brother had a veal chop which was equally magnificent. The service impeccable. A host of waiters surrounded you at your every need, like hawks though not intruding. Extremely knowledgeable. The management surveying their premises was very hospitable and made sure of a fine dining event. Deserts, wow equally excellent. You must try the Philly egg roll, great idea n one word sensational ”

Two, the food is very expensive, but worth every penny. ”

  • None whatsoever. None.
  • Surly. Rude. Unprofessional. Disdainful.

“Stay away from this place. Horrible, simply horrible. I fly into and out of Philly frequently (usually late at night) and this is the only place in Terminal D that serves alcohol. The service is horrendous! By far, the largest and most surly group of unfriendly staff ever collected under one roof. You'll sit at a table for service for what seems like eternity while you watch the staff go about cleaning up the place. When you finally go up to the bar to inquire about table service, they rudely inform you that there is no table service. And finding a bartender is next to impossible. Finally, a word about their prices. I was there one night where the staff switched the blaring music from rock to rap (where every other word was beeped out) and the manager was yelling at one of the busboys. Avoid this place like the plague.”

Snockeys Oyster & Crab House

Overall Rating: 10 User Rating Score: 10
Food:[10] • Service:[10] • Atmosphere:[10]

  • Atmosphere, Ken and Skip Snock, the staff, the crabcakes, oysters, bar specials, everything.
  • Nothing.

“I'm a Baltimore, Maryland crab cake girl...but Snockey's has won me over. I'll be back to Philadelphia and Snockey's. After reading about Snockey's in PW, I thought I've got to give this place a try...and I'm glad I did. I love their traditional oyster house atmosphere. I enjoyed sitting at the bar, noshing on their oyster sampler, cajun shrimp and hard-shell crabs while watching the 1:00 football games. I even had a crab cake, delicious food at great prices. Ken and Skip, the owners, and their staff, are down to earth people, a rare find today. They've been around a long time and now I know why. Can't wait to get back to Snockeys.”

Astral Plane
Sep 25, 2006 by Hana from Philadelphia

Overall Rating: 2 User Rating Score: 2
Food:[1] • Service:[3] • Atmosphere:[5]

  • Intimate setting.
  • Food, service, everything.

“After reading and hearing from various people that this restaurant was a good choice for a large group of friends, for an intimate celebratory dinner I was very disappointed at the food, the quality of service, and absolute disorganization when it even came to taking orders!! First, the chicken dish came back so undercooked the entire inside was pink. Only to return the plate back claiming the product was cooked, but you couldn't tell because they poured so much gravy on top that the chicken was indistinguishable from the potatoes. Another person's rare ah tuna, was guaranteed by the waitress and the server to be absolutely rare, mean while, there was barely an inch of pink to be seen within the dish. Instead of strip steaks that were ordered, the waitress didn't bother to distinguish the patrons that ordered filet mignon versus strip steak, and brought out filets for all (a big price difference). Oh, and they were all cooked to one consistency...so why bother asking how you want it cooked? They forgot to take people's orders. They forgot to put all of the orders in to the kitchen, so half of the large group didn't have food for a good 20 minutes while everyone else¿s' food was getting cold. They brought out dishes that people did not order. Food was not prepared properly. And the only dish that came out on time was the beef burger. I'm sorry to be writing all of this, but as a place that supposedly has a good reputation no manager/owner ever stopped by to make sure everything was okay or to manage the food situation, especially when the place only seats about 60 people (both upstairs and downstairs). Service was bad, food was bad, and it¿s really unfortunate, because we all had great hopes about our dining experience there.”

Jet Rock Bar & Grill

Food:[3] • Service:[1] • Atmosphere:[4]

  • Nothing.
  • Price and Service was horrible.

“I stopped by the bar on 9/18/06 at 14:39. I was greeted by the rudest barmaid I have ever encountered her name was Monica. No Hello How are you doing, No Thank you, All she did was complain about every one else that was sitting in the bar area to her coworker that was working the Tables. She never smiled and seemed like she hated being there. I work for Hilton Hotels as Bar Manager for the past 10 years and if I had a bartender that worked for me that was that impersonal I would dismiss her. I ordered a White Russian that was made with bar Vodka and a 1/2 shot of Kaluha and 20 little 1/2 and 1/2 containers that she complained about opening. ”

  • Lattes are their forte.
  • The staff is grumpy.

“Jazz & Java in the Philadelphia Airport is by far the best espresso bar in the country! They never compromise quality. I travel a bit and always go out of my way to get a double tall vanilla latte from this local business! No place in the world has coffee like this!”
