“The food was good, but the service was poor. We are not locals and the waitress and hostess took no notice of us. We were not even told the specials, but the table next to us (obviously locals) were told several specials and chatted with the hostess and waitress for several minutes.”

“We went for lunch and were greeted at the door by the owner, wearing dungaree shorts and a T-shirt. She led us into a pretty little dining room, well-lit, sort of a Hampton cafe look to it, although tables aren't evenly spaced and we were rather close to one of our neighbors. The menu item one of us wanted was no longer available, they just hadn't removed it/crossed it out. Sandwiches come with raw veggies or chips, or for $1 more you can choose from a variety of potatoes, French fries, sweet fries, and a few others. Both of us chose French fries. My husband received his burger with half a plate of tasty French fries (yes, I sampled them). I received my sandwich with a little pile of corn chips. When I pointed out the error, the waitress looked at her order pad and said "Oh yeah" and asked if I still wanted the fries. When I said yes, she went to the kitchen and brought me back a dish of potato chips. They were tasty enough, but not what I was expecting and the portion was about half the portion of the French fries. I just laughed and ate them, no sense pointing out the error again. No ketchup or mustard was offered. Oddly, while I was eating my meal, with about a half-dozen of the chips (or about 1/2 of the serving) left on the dish, a different waitress walked by and said "Can I take that for you?" and didn't wait for me to answer before picking it up and walking off with it. Fortunately she turned around and I guess I had something of an incredulous look on my face, because she asked if I wanted them back. I swallowed a few choice words and simply answered "yes," and she did deposit the dish back on the table, without the slightest 'oops, sorry'. I have no idea why she did that. When we were almost finished with our meal, we overheard the waitresses at two other tables reciting the day's specials. Our waitress hadn't bothered to tell us the specials and remarked that he probably would have ordered one of them. Our waitress stopped by when we were finished, asked if we wanted dessert, and when we said no thanks she left. Didn't take the dishes, didn't leave the check. We had to track down the owner for the check. Looking around the room we realized we were the only ones not dressed smart casual, we weren't poorly dressed, but neither of us wears designer clothes. We got the distinct impression that this restaurant is a Hampton want to-be, catering to a moneyed golf crowd, not to average people. We figured that they must've thought we had gone to the wrong restaurant -- they have a small take-out place a few blocks away with a couple of outdoor tables, where they probably direct the riff-raff to keep them out of their main restaurant. Well, speaking as a riff-raff, it was a meal we could have taken or left, nothing special, accented by very odd service. We wanted to like this place, but sorry, next time we're in Highlands we'll be dining elsewhere.”

“The food was great, but the service was lacking. It was the little things, really. We were not locals and noticed the subtle differences that we did not receive. It took us longer to get our drinks, it took us longer to order, it took us longer to get our meals, and it took us longer to get our checks.”

“I've been here a few times, I always come to town to see the fall leaves and malisons never disappoints. The menu varies by season and I eat what the waiter recommends. Very knowledgeable servers and great wine list. Its a can't miss for highlands travelers. ”

“If yoyo would like to impress this is the restaurant to chose. They call it high country cuisine, I call it very good and interesting meal with a great wine list. Great for one without budget or for special occasion. Try lunch too!!”
