• My spinach apple salad was good.
• Took more than 30 minutes to get food.

“Service was slow and food was cold and server stated he would separate checks at register and when we went to pay at register the same server who was now the cashier said he could not separate the checks. He either lied, misspoke or didn't feel like doing it. All unacceptable in the service industry.”

• I liked the atmosphere, great food, being very fresh and it says Chicago in every bite.
• They don't have late hours or weekends.

“I'm from Chicago, home of the Bears White sox, bulls and the cubs that are still waiting for next year. I still consider Chicago my hometown but I am currently living in Charlotte. I am a big fan of the food here at Matt's Chicago dog. He is from the Chicago area , and brings in only top brands like Vienna Beef. A true Chicago hot dog. I was impressed. He also makes a great cheesy Italian beef with sausage combo with sweet peppers. If your on a diet, forget it and go for the gold , thats what I say. And he makes the hot dogs the right way, no ketchup unless asked for it. Only children should have ketchup. In Chicago when you ask someone what kind of cheese they like, they might answer grilled cheese. In Chicago, a Italian beef is fancy eating, messy but a hearty meal. Thanks for bringing some real food to the Charlotte area.”

• Great ambiance, food presentation.
• Rush you out when done with no follow up and acknowledgment of this very concerning distraction from a restaurant of this nature.

“This is a great restaurant and the general impression was good. The only concern was the ending where you are rushed out very quickly, no after dinner coffee or liqueurs offered and a clear rush to get the check settled and get out of here. I brought this to the owner's attention but did not get a direct response.”

• The service was pretty decent and timely.
• They need to improve their food quality.

“The food was fair in most cases but I had breakfast at one time and the French toast was awful. I would really like to know why the restaurant has been closed for the last few weeks. I hope it is to improve the atmosphere and improve the food quality. Thanks.”

“Take out only. No tables. 2nd best take out chicken in the USA as rated on Food Network channel (Feb '08). Always crowded. (Best dang chicken in town.) During lunch expect 6 registers open, 36 people in line, but just a 5 minute wait from the time you walk in the door. Very quick. Menu is Chicken (fried), fish, shrimp, and bbq pork. That all. They find what the do best and stick with it. Food is fresh and hot. Birds are cooked thoroughly but still juicy. Spiced just right. Better than my Granny.”

“Food was the best Greek I have ever had. Restaurant could use some upgrading. New tables and chairs maybe. Also, they mopped the entire floor while people were eating. This was a mistake on their part. People don't want to eat while you are mopping around them. Wait staff was good. A few of the girls were doing all the work, while some looked lost. Most people I think don't know you need to tip them. They're working for tips even if you do order and pay at the register. I would recommend this place to all.”

“First of all the food is wonderful and the place is clean. The food is not jazzed up.....its food that you and I would appreciate in uptown Charlotte. Including the price. The outside dining is perfect. For lunch, you better get there quick if you don't like lines....word is out about the good food. Some people just don't like lines. However, that line that ends up out the door moves really fast because of the buffet style serving. Check it out sometime I promise you will not be let down.”

• Appetizers, 2nd course, "single scoop of ice cream".

“My experience at upstream was not what you would expect for a pricey "best of" charlotte restaurant. I had made reservations for a group of 14. Almost everyone at the table ordered the lobster bisque. Half of them came out cold. I notified one of the managers checking on the table and he said he would "take care of it", but nothing happened and we were charged for everything. For the main course our group ordered a mixture of steaks, pork chops, and seafood dishes. Again, some of the dishes came out cold, not what you would expect at a restaurant that required a contract to get in. The dishes that came out of the kitchen warm were good. If you decide to eat at upstream, I would recommend skipping all the appetizers and heading directly for the main course. Desert was decent.”

“It has new owners now and it's called Graham Street Grill. It's still carry out only, but they have the best hamburgers for great prices. They have a little bit of everything, gizzards, livers, grilled chicken (they have the best grilled chicken club). I have not had anything that I did not like. Very friendly owners, make you feel like you have known them years.”

• Not going back - maybe once more just to see the changes.
• The staff - diversification helps.

“Stopping periodically, imp tired of hearing the waitresses complain about there problems. The food is so-so. Your average dinner food. If you aren't feeling good or don't want to hear complaints don't stop. With the frequent visits I have made in the past, the one thing I noticed is they take the colored peoples money, but don't have any on staff. My assumption is my money is okay, but not my race. The waitresses act like prim Donna¿s, there not. My utmost suggestion is, don't order any Italian food in this place whatsoever. The sauce or gravy as some call it, is neither. It tastes like pasta with salsa. These dishes are made with provolone cheese, not mozzarella. Lastly, you would be better off going to McDonalds next door for the ambiance, the happy meal, the value, and normal friendly conversation. Don't let the specials fool you, there nothing special there. Thanks hope this helps.”

“This restaurant was very mediocre. We had reservations last weekend and entered a place with 5 out of the 20 or so tables filled. I had the $32 meal which was seemingly boiled to the point of tender shreds. It tasted like pot roast. My partner had a very unremarkable filet. The wine was over-priced which I expected, and the service was good. The atmosphere lends itself to the illusion of fine dinning, which may deceive some and alter their impressions of the food itself. ”

• They sure know how to do goat cheese!
• Can be a bit noisy around the bar area.

“My husband and I always seem to pick 300 east when we want a special evening out. It is a small restaurant with a cozy atmosphere. We always feel romantic in one of their secluded booths. The meal is always yummy. My husband always tries something new and I always get my usual- the best French onion soup and the fall salad with chicken. We both end up very satisfied. Hope you will like this quaint restaurant as much as we do. I would find a babysitter for this one- just so you can relax and enjoy the evening.”

• The service was not so great and the hibachi was so .

“We ate at the Kabuto in the university district. We were not impressed with the Hibachi, but the sushi was incredible. I am a sushi maniac I was so impressed. The sushis are very tasty and the rolls are very nice size not super small like most places. I highly recommend the 49ers roll and the spicy tuna and the eel. I ate there 2 nights in a row during my visit.”

“Went in late night approx. 1 am not knowing what to expect and I was amazed. I was trying to get away from the college crowd and all the drunk loud ones. Walked in and it was so dark and cozy. perfect setting. There were maybe 4 or 5 people at the bar but they were nice and mellow. The bartender Murphy really from Ireland was so nice, he asked what music we would want to hear and we just told him to surprise us and he did a wonderful job. They don't have beer specials and it was little pricey yet totally worth it. More than willing to pay an extra 1.50 a beer just to relax in an atmosphere like that. I am amazed at this little place and will defiantly be visiting again. ”

• The place was like a home away from home. friendly, waitresses didn't bother you to much yet kept making sure I was ok. old pictures on the walls from the old restaurant and south end before it became what it is today.

• The manager, Adam, can't cook.

“This place has some of the best food I've ever had. The alumni burger has so much stuff on it, it looks like a dog threw up on your plate. Toasted buns, perfectly cooked burger, 2 kinds of cheese, and beans in the chili. I can't say enough good things about this place. Scott and Brad are the good cooks, and their manager, Adam, shouldn't be behind a grill. So ask who's cooking your food.”

“My wife and I just moved to the Ballantyne area of Charlotte. This week we are sampling the local restaurants and Zapata is by far the best yet. The food is outstanding, especially their cheap and yummy lunch specials. Their cheese dip appetizer is the best I've ever had, as was their chicken burrito. I'm not sure about dinner, but the lunch portions were huge! I was shocked (and stuffed afterwards). The place looks like something straight out of Mexico (in a good way) and has a huge European-style fountain outside. Overall, the meal was perfect!!!”

“A note of caution for travelers who stop here. Do not leave any items inside your car that you might want later. Two cars in my group had their windows smashed and all contents stolen while we ate an early dinner. The cars were parked in front by the lights. Restaurant offered no assistance - told us to email police. Luggage, laptops, bags of work - everything was taken. ”

• What's not to like if you really like Mexican food.
• If you really don't like Mexican food, don't go.

“It's a regular family staple in my house, we have been going there for years. Great flavors, warm chips and fresh salsa and fabulous service. Definitely not your run-of-the-mill type place. My favorites include the "Expresso Burrito," "The Deluxe Burrito" (with shredded beef-you have to ask for "Shredded Beef"), I really enjoyed the Carne Asada Burrito, and I just tried the Arroz con Pollo today, and I would try it again. Family friendly, great for groups, and always fast and friendly service.”

• Superior food quality and waiter staff, tasteful decor.
• The tiniest bit noisy when full, due to acoustics of an old church building with high ceilings.

“A very pleasant dining experience. the wait staff were attentive, helpful, and genuinely engaged. the food was fresh, exquisitely prepared and presented. the fried lobster tail appetizer was a great way to taste the "special" of the house. you can make it as leisurely and relaxing as you like. the wine selection is varied and comprehensive. didn't get a chance to try the deserts whose descriptions were absolutely enticing.”

“Providence Road Sundries is a fantastic restaurant. It has two sides, literally, a place for the family and a bar for young couples. With their great food and excellent service, The Sundries (as it's known by the locals) is a place where you can just kick back and relax, no matter who you are. It has a very casual air about it, with an affordable menu and an exciting atmosphere. I discovered The Sundries about a year ago and have become familiar with the place ever since. I think that it's one of those finds that are rare and worthwhile. So if you are looking for a good time, then Providence Road Sundries is the place to be.”

“Authentic Japanese restaurant as you can tell when you see some of the customers speaking the language. Great place for a special dinner or business dinner and also works out with kids. The staff are very friendly and the food is out of this world. Yes you can get sushi but the star in my opinion are the entries bursting with flavors. It's more like a Japanese restaurant you would see in NYC or Las Angeles than what you normally see in Charlotte.”

“My order was sent back because it was wrong. I had to pull up in the drive thru and wait for the correct order. I received my order the second time and went back to work. They had brought me the exact same thing I sent back but with a different piece of chicken. I will not go back. I can see one mistake but not the same order after sending it back.”

“I've lived in Charlotte for a little over five years now, and I've finally found my favorite restaurant. Alexander Michaels is located in the 4th Ward neighborhood of downtown Charlotte. The actual restaurant is difficult to find because it occupies an old general store that blends in well with its surroundings. It's a nice, comfortable place to sit down and have a long lunch, but can be very busy and crowded with the downtown bank workers around noon. The staff is comprised of very friendly, unique individuals, and never before have I seen a wait staff more attentive. They have mastered the ability of checking on you just enough. You won't go without something for very long, but you aren't annoyed, either. Now on to the food. Try the Texas Wings, with the "wild" sauce. They don't bread them, but you won't mind. The skin is fried crispy, and the balance of heat and flavor in the sauce is perfect. Make sure to try them with their homemade bleu cheese dressing. The burgers are great, and they'll make one just about any way you like it. From a sizable aray of toppings, you get to choose two (can't go wrong with bacon & bleu). The fries were hot and fresh, with a crunchy exterior. That's about all I've tried so far, but I'll be a regular for quite a while. Give Alexander Michaels a shot.”
