Quaff Buffet Bar & Grill
Jan 26, 2009 by John from Mechanicsville, VA

Overall Rating: 8 User Rating Score: 8
Food:[8] • Service:[8] • Atmosphere:[8]

  • Great crowd, friendly service and traditional neighborhood bar atmosphere.
  • If you're looking for new, trendy, fancy, or gourmet, go elsewhere.

“The Quaff Bar and Grill is a family-owned traditional neighborhood bar in Quality Hill. When you're done with the trendiness and expense of the Power and Light district, head to Quaffs for a welcoming local crowd, healthy portions of good food, friendly service, and cold beer. If you want fancy and new, this is not your place. But if you're looking for a relaxed neon-lit bar room with pool, darts, and a friendly local crowd, this is a great place to hang out. Lunchtime draws a local business crowd.”

Figlio Restaurnat
Dec 29, 2008 by Chris from Kansas City

Overall Rating: 2 User Rating Score: 2
Food:[2] • Service:[2] • Atmosphere:[3]

  • Great location, on the plaza, nice view of the park.
  • The food, service, atmosphere, and decor.

“Very disappointing experience. Dated interior, dirty silverware & glasses. The dishes are worn and look something from a cafeteria. Our food was average at best, certainly not worth the price. The stacked eggplant was interesting, but served so lukewarm it couldn't be enjoyed. The chicken spedini was dry and tasteless. Drinks are way overpriced. Our server was better suited for a fast food joint than a sit down restaurant on the Plaza. Our meal was a waste of money. Save yours and eat somewhere else.”

Mannys Restaurant
Dec 14, 2008 by Frank from Kansas City

Overall Rating: 1 User Rating Score: 1
Food:[1] • Service:[1] • Atmosphere:[1]

  • The first basket of chips are free, but after that it's pay to play.
  • Dirty restrooms, dishonest staff, bad area, bad parking, rude service.

“I'm a Kansas City native. I've also traveled to Mexico. I've tried every restaurant in the metro and this is one of the worst! Ask any Mexican or Mexican American if authentic food is served at Manny's and they will laugh in your face. I overheard one person, who was waiting to be seated, say that Manny's is complete gringo food. I can't really speak to that, but what I can say is that the food at Manny's tastes like recycled table scraps. The wait to be seated is horrible, the manager and staff are rude and parking is terrible. I should also point out that the staff was terribly slow, rude and even downright dishonest. I left an $8.00 tip using my credit card, only to find out later after checking my bank account that the waiter forged a one before the eight to change my tip into an $18.00 tip! I will never eat there again! I would definitely not recommend Manny's to even my worst enemy. The food itself isn't even fit for a homeless person.”

Santa Fe Inn Inc
Dec 11, 2008 by pam from s.f. cal.

Overall Rating: 3 User Rating Score: 3
Food:[1] • Service:[9] • Atmosphere:[2]

  • People were friendly.
  • Bad food.

“Although service was good (we were the first in the door) the food deserved to being a nursing home setting or maybe hospital food. Really under-seasoned and food just not hot. Apple fritters were good but how can you screw that up? If they want to be taken seriously as a restaurant then they need to get rid of the plastic plates and cups. I will never return.”

Mannys Restaurant
Aug 12, 2008 by Larry from Springfield ,MO

Overall Rating: 10 User Rating Score: 10
Food:[10] • Service:[10] • Atmosphere:[9]

  • Tacos are great and the white cheese sauce is amazing.
  • Parking - but worth the wait.

“I can't begin to tell you how wonderful Manny's is, the service is top notch and they treat you as if you were apart of their family. Needless to say my grandkids were getting restless and the place was packed. A young man who was a manager went out of his way to help us out. He got us right in and said he understood why the kids were so excited he had some of his own. We had a wonderful experience the food was great and the Trio Aztlan was a knock out. I later found out from the waitress that gentlemen was the owners son. There is a family who cares about its costumers and I think his dad would be proud.”

Feb 21, 2008 by j from kc

Overall Rating: 5 User Rating Score: 5
Food:[6] • Service:[4] • Atmosphere:[5]

  • Wine pairings.
  • Just about everything.

“Service is worse than a run of the mill diner, wine pairing was good when they were actually brought around the time of the accompanying course. Food was good but after leaving had to eat somewhere else due to hunger. Courses were small and for the money there are numerous other places in the city that provide a much better experience.”

IHOP
Oct 8, 2007 by cheryl from Kansas City

Overall Rating: 10 User Rating Score: 10
Food:[10] • Service:[9] • Atmosphere:[6]

  • The restaurant seemed to be clean.
  • See review; I will never eat there again!

“We, (my daughter and I), stopped in about 2 weeks ago; September, '07. It was the most awful dining experience in a very long time. We have a waitress that must have seen too much of the old TV shows featuring loud mouthed nonstop chattering waitresses. We ordered the chicken Florentine crepes. They were served with horribly chopped chicken, chopped bell peppers and chopped onions inside. The top was covered with an obviously deeply colored (bright yellow. The color of a kitchen in the 40s!) The 'sauce' was hardened, and atop of this horrible sauce was a piece of square cut cheese half melted. I peeled the entire top off in one chunk thinking I would just eat the interior. There were no mushrooms or fresh spinach, only the bell peppers. The chicken was not strips, but little chopped pieces, that one might find as 'extras' from another entree cooked. When I mentioned this to the hostess she said "you should have told me". I was telling her, and I did tell her that I would never eat there again, nor would I.”

Pierponts At Union Station
Sep 28, 2007 by Joseph from Kansas City, Mo

Overall Rating: 10 User Rating Score: 10
Food:[9] • Service:[7] • Atmosphere:[9]

  • Crab bisque and tuna.
  • Dessert was tasty but could use some flare.

“The private dining rooms in the wine cellar are great! The food was fantastic, highlighted by the superb bisque which led to a wonderful dish of ahi tuna with mushrooms, rice and book Choy with just the right amount of ponzu and wasabi sauce. The server was a bit informal, but still knowledgeable. I highly recommend this as a destination spot in Kansas City!”

Food:[8] • Service:[10] • Atmosphere:[10]

  • Lack of creativity in the dishes, very ordinary.

“What an amazing building to start! The setting is quite grand and the floor to 40 foot ceiling bar is worth spending some time in. Our dinners were good, but what made the night was our excellent server. She was always there just before we needed her and we never had to wait.”

Gojo Japanese Steak House
Aug 1, 2007 by Rod from Chicago

Overall Rating: 2 User Rating Score: 2
Food:[1] • Service:[3] • Atmosphere:[5]

  • The building looks interesting.
  • Bad and not Japanese food by a long-shot!

“It's a house, and there is steak but there isn't anything Japanese about it! Made the mistake of going there with my Japanese wife expecting to have some good authentic food. I knew we were in for trouble when what we thought would be miso soup was actually super salty chicken noodle soup. It just went downhill from there. Salad was a bowl of lettuce with one sad looking mushroom on top. All of the seafood was definitely frozen and of low quality, and the crab that came with my wife's crab and scallop dinner turned out to be imitation crab. That was a low blow. And what the heck was that golden tasteless sauce they kept trying to pour on everything? Smokey, loud, mildly entertaining but most assuredly not good and not Japanese in any way shape or form! Save your cash and skip this Benihana knock-off or just go to Benihana instead if you need flying shrimp with your not-Japanese stir-fry, at least their food tastes a little better.”

Yj's Snack Bar
Jul 2, 2007 by Chaz from Kansas City

Overall Rating: 8 User Rating Score: 8
Food:[7] • Service:[8] • Atmosphere:[9]

  • YJ's is a friendly place with good food and coffee.
  • You may have to park down the block.

“I work nearby and have been going to YJ's since it opened five or six years ago. Near Union Station, Amtrak, Crown Center and the Crossroads Arts District, it's operated by an artist/entrepreneur and urban pioneer who lives above the joint and whose influence is obvious from the menu to the varied art on the walls. Funky, artsy, friendly, bohemian, musical, eclectic all these words can be used to describe YJ's. First of all, YJ's is a place to drink coffee or espresso, eat, read and (coff, coff) smoke. Yes folks, smoking is allowed in the tiny space and decaf beverages are not served. So if you are against tobacco or caffeine, find another joint. They have live music on occasion and the widest variety of recorded music outside of an old-style used record store. The folks who work there choose what they want to hear and they usually play it loud. Kids and dogs have been known to wander in and out. They're open something like 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. most days and 24 hours from Thursday through Saturday. The menu includes things like dirty rice, Mayan tostadas, lunchtime sandwiches, and other dishes, I suspect are made up on the spot. Breakfast is old-style, fresh bagels, pancakes, bacon, eggs, yoghurt, granola all the good stuff. Highly recommended.”

Food:[6] • Service:[7] • Atmosphere:[10]

  • Great atmosphere, Good Salads, Really Great Desserts.
  • Steak dry ,not very tender or flavorful. did not do well the next day ,when reheated.

“Our greeting upon arrival at the restaurant was kind of Chilly. The 6 of us wondered , If this had been a good choice. Atmosphere inside the restaurant was really great , We could actually converse and hear each other. Wine list was not as extensive, as The Capital Grille. Steaks were not as good as Capital Grille. The Desserts and salads were really great. Our Waiter, was a college student. He was really nice and helpful.”

Pierponts At Union Station
Apr 29, 2007 by Amanda from Kansas City

Overall Rating: 1 User Rating Score: 1
Food:[3] • Service:[1] • Atmosphere:[5]

  • Blue crab and sweet corn bisque soup.
  • Horrible service from a rude waitress, burnt steak.

“My boyfriend and I went here for our 2 year anniversary and it was the worst dining experience we have had in two years, primarily because of our waitress. She seemed to cater more to the customers who were drinking alcohol (and we were not) and at one point we waited for about 15 minutes for refills. I ordered my steak well done, however it came out burnt! When the waitress finally came by, I had to stop her and let her know that I just couldn't eat it. She said she could get me another one or she could just box it up and take it off our bill. But, rather than give me a chance to answer she walked off with my plate and my boyfriend's plate (without even asking him if he was done). Why would I want to box up a burnt steak? The soup we had for starters was good, but she acted as if it came with the meal and didn't mention it cost extra--we found this out when we got the bill! My boyfriend did ask to speak to the manager and he was apologetic and cut our bill in half, but that surely did not make up for the rest of the evening. To give credit to the other staff, they were friendly, but we just had terrible service. And, though we were given $20 off our next meal coupons, we will never choose to go back to pierpont's. What a disappointment after having read wonderful reviews!”

Mannys Restaurant
Apr 12, 2007 by Melinda from Kansas City, MO

Overall Rating: 3 User Rating Score: 3

  • Good chips.
  • Rude manager and wait staff.

“I had a very negative experience with the manager of Manny's restaurant today. When I called to complain about the hot salsa we received instead of mild and that my friend did not get what she ordered, the manager told me that I did not read the menu correctly and it was my fault. I read off the menu item to the waitress who took the take-out order, so how is it my fault if I read the item off their menu? Instead of being apologetic and listening to my concerns, she yelled at me that it was my fault. This is poor customer service. The customer is right, and while I did not expect any resolution, the least she could have done was not yell at me and acknowledged their errors. I will not be going back to Manny's.”

  • Appearance of building, lack of the German speaking employees, no strudel.

“Food was excellent, but the building needs updating. I looks scary from the outside, but once you get past the front door you're alright. The food may be German, but the employees don't speak German. The Jaeger Schnitzel was wounder bar, but they don't have Apfel Strudel on the menu! How can you be a German restaurant and not have Apfel Strudel!”

Overall Rating: 6 User Rating Score: 6
Food:[5] • Service:[6] • Atmosphere:[6]

  • Chicken.
  • Steaks over-rated, atmosphere ordinary.

“Four of us went to Hereford House in Lea wood's Town Center. The atmosphere reminded me of a chain restaurant, e.g., booths and a western theme, nothing extraordinary. Our server was a sullen teen-ager. The steaks were a major disappointment. My buddy and I both ordered top sirloin. Yes, they are not the best cut but not the worst either. Our steaks were dry and over-cooked (we both ordered medium). Our wives loved their chicken though. For a good steak, I would recommend Plaza IV, on the Plaza. ”

Gojo Japanese Steak House
Jun 6, 2005 by Vicky from Kansas City

Overall Rating: 3 User Rating Score: 3
Food:[9] • Service:[1] • Atmosphere:[1]

  • The chef was excellent
  • Not a good place to go for 10+ people

“While Gojo's does have very good food and the chef's are quite entertaining, the service leaves much to be desired. I went for my sister's bachlorette party and we had called to confirm the reservation twice after our initial call. When we arrived we were split into 2 groups of 8 and sent to seperate corners of the restaurant after being assured on the phone that we would be together. Although there were 2 empty tables facing each other where one of our parties were sent, the servers and the hosts were unwilling to seat us together. Because the food is well prepared this restaurant might be fine if you have a couple of people willing to share a table with strangers but it is not family friendly.”

  • the wait to get seated if you get there to late.

“Stouds is the ONLY chicken I have ever tasted that is as close as my grandmothers and my wife's chicken. It is the greatest place for chicken, catfish and other foods. The shrimp is the biggest I have ever seen besides on the coast. It would take 8 or 10 regular shrimp from say, Red Lobster, to match one of Strouds Shrimp. You want a great meal with an endless bowl of potatoes and gravy and a meal you can never eat it all. Go to Strouds!Great Food!!”

Food:[10] • Service:[10] • Atmosphere:[10]

  • Spectacular food & service
  • none that I can think of

“We found this restaurant quite by accident the first time we visited KC and were drawn to it by the huge flame outside the restaurant. The food is out of this world great! It has a large selection and each and every food we have tried there have been huge hits. We usually like to try different restaurants when we are on vacation and never eat somewhere twice, but we broke our own rule on this one. We enjoyed it so much that we ate there one more time before we left town because it is THAT spectacular. The service is A+ as well:) If you are in town and want to try somewhere with a really neat atmosphere, friendly service, and absolutely THE BEST food-- try this place. You'll be glad you did!”

The final straw was a family dinner for 12 that lasted three hours and featured surly teenage service and lukewarm/cold food. Not worth it.”
