User Reviews for Minneapolis Restaurants« Go back to Lacombe RestaurantsResearch User Reviews for Minneapolis (1-20 of 48)Hard Times Cafe Inc
“Nasty bathroom, bunch of jerks, don't know why their espresso is so poorly extracted, must be fixed, this restaurant is an abomination to Minneapolis. They parade themselves as worker owned and to be honest, I think that is great, however they are excellent at giving co-ops a bad name. Perhaps a more successful co-op will find its roots in the twin cities. Just look at north country co-op. The neighborhood won't be around much longer anyway, good riddance. Starbucks won't you please just make some Vegan offerings and kick the curb to the street.”

“The service was terrible we were there for 4 hours and our server only came to our table 4 times thats once an hour, you'd think they'd want to sell as much food and alcohol as they possible could. All in all I would not recommend this establishment to anybody. the only good thing about that place was the pizza we ordered I have to say it was good, but other than the pizza I wouldn't recommend it and I wont be returning anytime soon.”

“Fat Lorenzo's is a great restaurant with amazing food, the only problem is how crowded it is, but that should tell you about the great food on its own.”

“We had never dined at Figlio before and were genuinely impressed. The host(s) were extremely friendly. Our waitress, was very helpful in explaining the menu, etc. We even asked to be moved to another table, and she was very accommodating. Had the fried homemade ravioli as an appetizer, which was delicious! For an appetizer, I would say the portion was small. There were 5 ravioli, which was perfect for 2 people, but may not have been enough for a larger group. I ordered the Figlio Chicken Club, which had very good flavor and very filling. The fries that come with it were excellent. The Tagliatelle was also a great choice! Overall, a wonderful Valentine's Day dining experience! Thanks, Figlio, and keep up the good work!”

“I'm a student at the University. Prices for lunch specials are pretty decent for a college student. Service is bad - they charge almost up to 50% for tips, regardless of how many are dining with you.”

“I used to be a regular at this restaurant. When I used to order from this place, I would order the same thing each time, and each time the price is different (not including tip). When I would ask the server why this is so, he would tell me its always been the same price.”

“The food is awesome. In fact whenever I go by there at noon the line is out the door. I recommend getting there early. They are only open from 11 am to 2 pm. The staff is always friendly.”

“My husband and I have been guests at Lucia's on several occasions. We are never ever disappointed. The food is always excellent and the menu changes weekly giving you an opportunity to order different items. You often are greeted by the owner, which is always a good start. The prices are very good and the service is excellent. I have seen the same wait staff for years now so I guess it must be a good place to work and when employees are happy everything seems to be right with the establishment. The parking lot charges a minimal fee but it is well worth it.”

“More of a sports pub, but has large white-collar lunch crowd. Good beer selection, very football friendly. Good appetizers and main course. Good value and friendly staff. It was next door to my hotel and I went there several times-it was always good.”

“I went in thinking, let me give this place a chance, and the experience was not what I hoped. The girl at the cashier was rude in telling me about how she charged me a surcharge for me using my card, when she rung it up as credit card, instead of a debit. I am from New Zealand and got confused with her explanation. The hot chocolate tasted like water and the cup was too tiny for a small. Nothings going to budge me from the service and value at Starbucks for sure!”

“The waitress we had was not friendly at all. She hardly spoke to us and when she did it was just short and rude. The food was over priced for what it was and do not dare ask for more salsa and chips. Overall, I would rather go to Acapulco. They have much tastier food for a better price and at least the service is moderate there.”

“We were seated immediately. It took approximately 20 minutes for the server to come to our table. Ordered $12.00 sandwiches. Waited another 20 minutes and received one of our oder. Waited another five for my companion's order. Also ordered four whole pies three days earlier for a company event. Unfortunately, the banana cream and chocolate cream pie had no whipped cream or any embellishment on top of the pies. Crust and filling - that's it. I spent $15.00 per pie. When I called the restaurant, the manager didn't apologize. He blamed me for not requesting whipped cream. He was surly, rude and unapologetic. He, in essence, spent five minutes arguing with me rather than resolving the situation. Word of advice, order a piece of pie if you are eating at Peter's Grill - but do not bother ordering whole pies - especially if it is for a special occasion. You will be sorely disappointed. Poor customer service.”

“The food quality is excellent! 1st Wok always uses pure white meat for chicken (no fatty and dark meat) and crisp vegetables. I may have tried everything on the menu and have never been disappointed. The owner and his wife are truly friendly, hard working people who have made it a family business. The food and service are so good, when I split with a former boyfriend years ago, he thought he could claim the restaurant in the break-up (this never stopped me from eating there of course)!”

“A & J Fish & Chicken isn't a place where you would go on a first date, or to hang out but it does have great food and great prices. The menu is unbelievable with various food options ranging from sandwiches to burgers to gyros and of course to fish entries. The catfish dinner is amazingly good. It comes with four pieces of fried catfish, fries, toast, and coleslaw. I frequent this restaurant with my boyfriend who also loves their food. This restaurant is definitely one of those places where you would get your food to go because there aren't really that many sitting tables and it is a small place. I highly recommend this restaurant for their food.”

“I've lived in the neighborhood for approximately 5 years and had never gone to the 1st wok before. One day out of the blue I decided to go and now I just can't quit! They have by far the best food a Chinese restaurant can offer! My all time favorite is the House Fried Rice! Yum!”

“Located across the Street from the U. of M. This is a worker owned vegetarian restaurant of a good size, open to all and affordable with good food and a modern kitchen. I have happily eaten here since Nov. 1992. One person said to me, "This is the last place I go when I leave town and the first place I visit when I come back", a statement that typifies the hard Times. Open 22 hours a day, the coffee is "Strong enough to defend itself" and always made with a Press Pot: Buck a cup.”

“By far the best coffeehouse I have ever been too. Their drinks and deserts are on another level. Been to almost every coffee house in the twin cities and have yet to find a drink that is better than any other Uncommon. On top of having the best drinks and desserts it is a much classier environment than any other coffee house. The owner of Uncommon Grounds obviously has a lot of class and I love the more sophisticated crowd and the music. It's nice to go to a coffee house and not feel like you are surrounded by a bunch of apathetic people waiting for the reaper to take them away.”

“Recently my husband and I took our 8 year old daughter to the Nutcracker Ballet at the Orpheum Theater. I wanted to make this really special for her, so I thought we go out to eat before the show. I made reservations for the Palomino, which is right across from the Orpheum. We got there early so we decided to sit in the bar area and have a drink. Initially I thought the place was very nice; the atmosphere is very cool and pleasing to the eye. However, this all changed as the evening progressed. For anyone who is a wine drinker, they have a terrible wine list (cheap wine for an expensive price). Service was okay, but food was terrible. I had Sea bass ($26), which tasted fishy, and was really bland; my husband ordered the Prawn Scampi ($20), which he did not receive Prawns they were jumbo shrimp, and the pasta it came with was all clumped together and hard in areas. My daughter had steak ($7), and she loved hers (I would have rather had her meal). We ended up spending $130 on an awful meal, and considering Ive eaten at a lot of up scale restaurants downtown, I wont ever go back!”

“Seems owner has decided to increase his profits by cutting portion sizes. The onion rings used to spill from the basket onto your tray now there maybe 5 or 6 rings but guess what the price went up! The blue plate special used to swim in gravy now you can see the white bread with the lack of gravy. The roast beef sandwich used to be piled high but now you need to order two and combine the meat to get an original Wallys roast beef sandwich. Your regulars see these changes and you are not fooling any of your regulars you are losing them as customers!”

When went to pay for the shingle sandwich, asked for the manger the server screamed at us "this is how bad the food and service is every day".”

“The restaurant is falling apart. It is in need of updating. It looks the same as it did when I first dined there (20+ years ago). The food has always been good!!! Very consistent for the past 20+ years. The tables are too close together. Everything is too close together. They seem to be constantly short on staff.”

“Campobello's is an overpriced branch of the D'Amico empire. Housed inappropriately in a space that used to have a Tex-mex cafe, the atmosphere is not particularly intimate. White linen tablecloths and table candles weren't enough to overcome the crowded seating plan and noise levels were higher than a "date restaurant" ought to be, but not unacceptable. Seating was immediate at 6:30 on a Saturday evening, not a good sign. Service was reasonably attentive but neither particularly helpful nor friendly. Clientele was quite elderly for the neighborhood, perhaps composed of people who didn't feel hip (or perhaps "hip") enough for the neighborhood's trendy bistros and uncomfortable with Thai, Indian, or even Vietnamese. A few uncomfortable teens being taken out by grandparents were the only under-30s not at the bar. The menu offers entrees from $17 to $35, appetizers from $7, and wines from $30 to $150 a bottle. The menu of "specials" that rotate monthly says those are more marketing than "what a great find our buyer made". For heaven's sake, even if you aren't going to rotate them frequently you shouldn't put "Specials for July 1 to 31" on the menu. As is common, a bread basket was presented. Three (halved) slices of unexceptional sesame-crusted Italian bread served with a cold triangle of butter clearly cut from a one-pound slab with no additional blending, herbs, or even softening at room temperature. The $12 calamari appetizer was coated in a nearly tempura-light batter that was falling off the slightly chewy squid. My dining partner and I couldn't decide if this was an interesting textural counterpoint or simply inappropriate. The accompanying aioli sauce was quite spicy, more so than the level of garlic would suggest but there was no significant horseradish note either. An ordinary Chardonnay went for $38 a bottle. An $8 "Caesar" salad consisted of five un-cut leaves of Romaine with a half dozen one-inch-square stale croutons. That explains the steak knife, it was needed for both. The dressing was no better than supermarket bottled and the finely grated parmesan wasn't either. No fine touches like anchovies or indeed anything out of the ordinary. (OK, not everyone likes anchovies, but still). The shrimp linguini ($19) was unexceptional, nice noodles, tender shrimp, and buttery sauce but again nothing really interesting. There were a few nickel-size disks of some unidentified substance neither seafood nor pasta, not crisp enough to be a water chestnut and without the resistance of a vegetable. Maybe stray gnocchi? Portion sizes were appropriate, not the pig-out three-meal platters that have contributed to our obesity epidemic. We were not about to blow another fifteen bucks on coffee and dessert. The total tab including tax and tip for this very modest dinner was $90, about $40 more than it was worth. Those are not Midwestern prices, though a New Yorker or San Franciscan wouldn't be shocked. Really, any chain Italian joint (Olive Garden) could serve you the exact same quality of food for half the price. At that tab I expect subtle and innovative cooking, better presentation servers that describe menu items in detail, and cooking I would have a hard time duplicating at home. All in all, I would not recommend this place. The food was acceptable but not exceptional and the value was terrible. There were no small children, who would have been bored out of their minds. The "date night" atmosphere was way below par, it's not near downtown or hotels for business travelers, and the gross overpricing suggests that, like us, the typical customer is someone who wanders in and doesn't ever come back.”

“D. Brianna restaurant reviews 9.5 out of 10great-tasting food, affordable prices ($6-$9) great service, overall great experience. d. Brian is as fast as many fast food places but the quality is much better and the food is healthier. For those who have not been to d. Brianna, the ordering system is different than a traditional restaurant. Rather than being waited on, you order directly from the cook that prepares your sandwich, wrap, etc. This helps to speed up the overall process. Then, after you receive your entrance from the cook, you proceed to grab a soda and chips or what you and check out at the cash register. The ordering process is similar to many ski resorts. My only complaint is that I wish they were open longer in downtown Minneapolis. The hours are 7:00am-2:00pm Monday-Friday. However, I heard that the Brianna is opening a new location in Eden prairie, off of highway 212, on technology drive by the SW metro transit park and ride. It is supposed to have Wifi and be catered more toward families rather than just office workers. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. Great for quick lunches and meetings -- the food quality is impressive and the place is always clean and neat.”

“I still go there despite the 'be-thankful-we-are-stooping-to-serve-you' attitude that I invariably encounter at the front desk. Not all the time but often enough. But the pancakes and hash browns make up for the front desk. They just opened a branch in Eden Prairie. I hope there are no divas on this front desk. We'll see.”

“Nine of us decided to have brunch on Sunday and I called to make a reservation. I was told that the restaurant does not take reservations, but that the wait would be shorter if we called ahead. I confirmed with her that we were coming in about an hour. Once we arrived I was told that wait time would be 30 minutes and was told by the hostess, with an attitude, "for a party as large as yours, calling ahead does not make a difference". We were seated 60 minutes later, with no apology from the hostess and simply a strong "I am too busy for you" attitude. Messed up our once-in-two-months reunion with our friends. Food was fine, but everyone was so put off by the wait, that we didn't relax to enjoy it. ”
