Chinns 34th Street Fishery
Jul 20, 2009 by Seafood Lover from Naperville, Illinois

Overall Rating: 10 User Rating Score: 10
Food:[10] • Service:[10] • Atmosphere:[8]

  • King Crab on Mondays - Can't beat the price or quality!
  • Ask for melted butter instead of the butter/oil mixture they give you for crab.

“I wanted a sloppy, sweet, blender drink from the bar. The waitress suggested their Pina Colada. The drink was just what the doctor ordered & the size was a value at $6.00. We ordered iced tea & it was perfectly brewed. Not warm or bitter, not too strong, & not too weak with ample ice. The garlic rolls come drizzled with a helping of warm, freshly minced garlic cloves, butter, & herbs. The house salad had fresh cold crisp greens (not warm, limp or with that old lettuce stink that even some of the best restaurants can't seem to avoid), cucumbers (crisp, not soggy with the centers fallen out), tomatoes (meaty & fresh tasting, not mealy, bruised or green & hard), hearty red onion (sweet like it should be, not hot like a pepper that burns your tongue as they often are), & my favorite, black olives that tasted like black olives (ripe colossal ones, not sliced, & not tasting like a can or a chemical). I noticed what looked like clarified butter, but it was a mix of butter & oil. I asked instead for some plain melted butter, which has a bit more salt taste (complimenting the crab). The crab was steaming hot (not room temp. or on the verge of downright cold). The shell was rock-hard & fresh (not soggy or rubbery as is the case at some places). The meat alone was delicious. Maybe a dip here or there in the butter or a drop of lemon to switch it up in between bites of delectable naked sweet crab. He said his blackened salmon tasted terrific but was a bit on the mushy side. Possibly over-cooked or a softer-fleshed breed of Salmon. The green beans were at the peak of freshness (not pre-frozen), they were cooked to perfection. Same goes for the carrots & zucchini in the mix. There was a small side of sweet Cole Slaw. Among all the decadent desert choices, the waitress mentioned they had coconut cake which wasnt on the menu. We opted for a slice & 2 forks. Coconut cake is one of my prized favorites. I was looking forward to tasting Chinns version of it. Holy smokes! This is the stuff they must serve in Heaven. Completely tasted as though it was just baked by hand - by someone with a lot of loving! Then the waitress confirmed that in fact a little lady bakes deserts fresh for them daily, right there in the kitchen! It had thick layers of some kind of whipped cream & Heaven, which had a light, refreshing flavor, allowing the flaked coconut to do the talking. This was a cake youd find at one of your better weddings. In fact, the waitress added that, The coconut cake, & any of Chinns other fresh baked deserts can be baked to order for just such an event. P.S. When youre dealing with sloppy butter-fingers, it is a must to have a pile of thick absorbent napkins (which they give you right off, & really theyre more like paper towels which do the trick). Those other re-usable/washable polyester fabric napkins may look great, but only serve to move messy food around, rather than removing it from your digits. As if that all wasnt wonderful enough, at meals end we were treated to oversized, sturdy, hot, moist disposable finger towels, wrapped in sterile plastic sleeves with just a pleasant hint of refreshing citrus (not those foil-packed, cheap & tiny, paper-thin towelettes that barely clean one finger off, & tear at the slightest sign of stress). All-in-all, we left that place fat & happy!”

Overall Rating: 9 User Rating Score: 9
Food:[9] • Service:[8] • Atmosphere:[7]

  • Amazing food!
  • Decor needs to be updated. Gut the entire restaurant.

“Family owned and operated restaurant with great food in an old fashioned atmosphere. I have been there numerous times and have enjoyed the following: Chicken Vesuvius, Capro bruschetta, Calamari, baked clams, lasagna, minestrone soup, chicken masala, linguine scampi and canolas. Very traditional Northern Italian menu. Don't be fooled by the decor the food will blow you away!”

Chinns 34th Street Fishery
Oct 25, 2007 by Lisa from Green Bay

Overall Rating: 10 User Rating Score: 10
Food:[10] • Service:[10] • Atmosphere:[9]

  • Great fresh seafood.
  • Go early to avoid 7p.m. dinner rush, you'll wait, but have a mai tai.

“The food is phenomenal, best fresh Dover sole! And awesome soft shell crab (available approx May-Oct.) Never have had a bad meal there. Kids love it, it is not cheap, but its, fresh seafood flown in every day! Quieter than the chinn's in wheeling, which is great, too. We just prefer the quieter version with same great seafood. Mai tai drink and blue crab claws appetizer is delish, too. Like I said never have had anything bad there. Every time we get back to Chicago we always go there. .”

The Lodge Pub And Grille
Jun 27, 2007 by Jen from Lisle

Overall Rating: 8 User Rating Score: 8
Food:[10] • Service:[6] • Atmosphere:[7]

  • Good is great for the price.
  • Service isn't the best.

“The lodge offers 1/2 price food everyday from 4pm-7pm as well as 1/2 price food and drinks every Sunday all day (after brunch). We haven't had anything that wasn't good on the menu. All of their appetizers are great, especially their wings and buffalo shrimp. The Cajun clucker is fantastic and there's so much food you are sure to take some home. There are two patios that are wonderful to be on during the summer months and usually some sand volleyball to watch.”

Chinns 34th Street Fishery
Feb 27, 2007 by Sherry from Darien

Overall Rating: 10 User Rating Score: 10
Food:[10] • Service:[10] • Atmosphere:[5]

  • Love, love, love the shrimp bisque, garlic & oil rolls and shrimp decongest.
  • Noise factor but not bad enough to stop us from going back.

“Amazing food at awesome prices. A no glitz-no glamour restaurant but if you want to walk out satisfied and feeling you got your monies worth, this is the place to go. The garlic and oil rolls they serve to customers are to die for. We love their shrimp decongest, sauteed scallops, fried clam strips, their fresh fish of the day blackened is out of this world and we've only touched the surface of what they offer. There are cheaper places to eat of course but for fresh seafood that is reasonably priced and you get your monies worth - chin's has our vote.”

Pete & Johnny's Tavern & Grill

Overall Rating: 10 User Rating Score: 10
Food:[10] • Service:[10] • Atmosphere:[10]

  • Penne Orleans and 1lb. Calamari.
  • Nothing.

“This restaurant is a great place for watching sports and being with your family. I recommend the 1 lb. or calamari bowl, and the Penne Orleans pasta dish with the best Asia go sauce ever made. It is a nice atmosphere with sports broadcasted on their many TV's and the service is very good. I recommend this restaurant to all people who like to have a good time, watch sports, and eat excellent food.”

Pete & Johnny's Tavern & Grill
Dec 31, 2005 by Liz from Colorado Springs

Overall Rating: 10 User Rating Score: 10
Food:[10] • Service:[9] • Atmosphere:[10]

  • Really great service.
  • The bar was a little smoky.

“I was in town on business, and stayed at the Hyatt. The front desk referred me to Pete and Johnny's. I went on a Wednesday night. They had Girls Night Out going on. Not really a lot of girls, but I can not imagine why? The drink special was a Star bucks martini, and it was great. I sat in the bar by myself and did not feel uncomfortable, being a woman by myself. I had the Beef Kabob appetizer. It was great. I also entered the free raffles and won a great necklace.”
