• Delicious home cooking, large portions & cheap! Friendly & welcoming.

“Mary Lou's is an experience. Stepping in there is like going back in time. The food is incredibly good down home cooking, with large portions at great prices. It is not for those looking for upscale decor as its really more like going to eat in Grandma's kitchen. Along with some tables it has a counter to sit at and eat while you watch them fix your food. This is a family run business and when you go there, they get to know you and treat you like family. The letters, pictures, and articles on the walls say it all. They have been around forever and I think they must've kept many a college student from starvation and homesickness. They are only open for breakfast and lunch. At lunch time they have all the grill food plus plate lunch specials, which are an outrageous amount of great food for the price. But what can't be missed is breakfast and the biscuits and gravy. Order breakfast, and these actually come with it as an appetizer. So you can eat these heavenly little things while waiting for your eggs to cook. Come before they run out, because when the biscuits and gravy are gone for a day, they're gone! The best food, best service, and best prices for what you get. Pure comfort.”

• When we finally got our food it was pretty good.
• Bad service.

“The waitress served our rolls but we didn't have any silverware no straws for our drinks so we sat there till she made it back. I told her we needed silverware she said it wasn't her fault the hostess is suppose to bring them and that's ok but 3 other tables that were seated after us had their main courses and we were just getting our salad and 1 table had 5 people. Really bad service I tipped her but not as much as I usually do and I should of gave her less. When service is bad I don't go back.”

“Horrible service. I used to order from them a lot and every time they would get my order wrong and it was a simple order. Also when I would call to tell them they messed it up they would act as if it was my fault. I do not suggest ordering from here.”

• Food just average.

“Ok place, but not very good Mexican food, not much better than Taco Bell. Rather go elsewhere for authentic Mexican food. Most people I talked to there were there more for the cold beers other than the food. Again, food very industrial rather than fresh made.”

• Great Muffaletta sandwich, fish platters Monday is family style fish. Ribs, biq sandwich. Friendly staff.
• Not open early enough on weekend breakfast days.

“Great local gathering place with lots of waterfowl that migrates along the "Mississippi flyway" route on display on the walls. Unique atmosphere and a menu with something for everybody. Lots of townies so you know it's good. If you're a sportsman this is a must. If you like good food at a good price it is a must. Also do great weekend breakfast. Full bar and sweet tea. Lots of specials that I have been lucky enough to catch on some days.”

• Food quality is always good.
• Can be noisy.

“Only two good restaurants in Carbondale, and this is one of them (I also suggest Chicago underground). The only better Asian food, of any kind, will require travel to Chicago land.”

• Great appetizers, Owner and staff are very friendly.
• Honestly can't think of anything.

“We have eaten at Human so many times, and have never been disappointed. Atmosphere is pleasant, quiet, and NON SMOKING. Food is exceptional. We are addicted to the Crispy Shrimp and Crispy Pork, but everything we have ever had is better quality than any Asian Restaurant in the area, probably better than any restaurant of any kind. ”

• Non smoking, friendly service, wonderful food.
• Prices range 9..99 to 18.99. May be a drawback for some.

“Hunan is definitely the best Chinese Restaurant in Carbondale, and it might be a good bet that it is the best in Illinois. Sometimes we talk about going somewhere else, but always end up at Hunan. It is not a buffet, so if that is what you expect you will be disappointed. It is clean, light comfortable and the whole restaurant is non smoking. We would like to try different things on the menu, but the Crispy shrimp, crispy pork and Jumbo shrimp in sweet chili sauce are so good that we can't get past them. Spring rolls are good and the jungle salad is unique. We love the calamari. Orders are a little small, but sauce is wonderful. If the owner, San, comes around to your table, tell him the people from West Frankfort sent you. ”

“Arby's has decided to raise their prices along with gas. WOW I had a $9.00 value meal. In a college town no less. I guess this is why Donald Trump likes to go there it is in his price range.”
