Shoki Japanese Steak House

“I visited Shoki as a group of 5, and had such a horrible experience that no one in my group will ever return. We were told the wait would be an hour but it was closer to 2 hours, before we were seated. Since the restaurant was crowded, we were seated in a back room. We sat in the room along with 4 other individuals, at least 20 minutes before a member of my party went to the front to request service. The manager apologized, and mentioned someone would be with us immediately. We discovered, the manager was the same person who had walked by our room, and looked in the door 3-4 times without asking if we had been helped. The service from that point was still lacking but at least we were served food. (Someone asked for diet coke and was brought regular coke on 3 separate occasion could go on and on.) To top the evening, a member of my party told the chef that she was allergic to shellfish and asked that her meal be cooked individually in the main kitchen. The chef then proceeds to cook for the remaining party and drops shrimp onto the plate of the person who was allergic to shellfish. Priceless. At that point, we decided to leave as we had been at this restaurant over 3.5 hours. Never again. The food is okay but with service like this, I can't convince myself to visit again. Will Athens ever have a decent Japanese restaurant?”

• Variety, taste, cool atmosphere, friendly, signature apple butter for homemade biscuits.
• Very slow, so don't go if you're pressed for time.

“I haven't been in a while, but if it is still the same, this is GREAT food. One word of caution, the service tends to be way slow, so make sure you've got lots of time to spare. Still, if you can, this is the kind of food and place you'll want to linger anyway. For lunch, they tend to do specials - all kinds of different veggies, veggie casseroles, tofu, etc. They write them on the board and cross each item off as it disappears. You pick something like 3-4 items and it comes with one of their homemade biscuits. (Be sure to ask for their apple butter to add to the biscuit!) The specials are cool, but they have other stuff too. A tofu breakfast scramble that is amazing, and I'm not really big on tofu. If you aren't a vegetarian yourself but like good veggies, frequently with a unique southern flair, give it a try. I still miss it! (Btw, I went to UGA law in Athens, so this review is based on several visits).”

“I just don't see the point of keeping peanut shells on the floor. Kind of makes the place look trashy even though it isn't trashy. They should sweep the floor. I've worked in too many restaurants. The place was okay.”

• There Mongolian beef fried rice and garlic shrimp are awesome, they deliver.
• Kind of pricy for dinner.

• Food, price, availability.
• Kids, service, drinks, waitresses, desserts (always look old), some food cold.

“Food is pretty good but there are way too many people walking around while eating. I dont understand why they dont let you fix your own drinks. Especially when you have to get up and get your own food. It is kinda backwards. Then, the waitresses expect a tip at the end of it for fixing those drinks (dont think so). But overall its an okay place. I wouldnt go there on a romantic date or anything, but after a football game, or a movie would be okay. But hey to each his own.”

• Chefs, honey mustard salad dressing, sushi! Tons of food.
• None!

“Always great food. I've eaten there numerous times. Just make sure you have a reservation if you are pressed for time. It is a very popular place, so the wait gets very long otherwise. But, it's totally worth the wait if you have time!”

• The chief.
• Being rushed through our meal - waiting time to be seated took longer than our rushed meal.

“We had reservations and waited for 45 minutes past our reservation. The party sitting across from us was seated at the same time as us but they were not rushed through their meals as we were. Our salads did not arrive until after we were served rice and vegetables. We told our waiter that we were there for my daughters birthday and they never sang happy birthday to her although we were reminding them several times. Our to go containers were brought to us while we were still eating. We spent more time waiting than we spent seated at our table. I was extremely disappointed.”

• Some food servers are all that friendly.

“Don't go to Athens without visiting Harry bassets. For lunch, dinner or brunch, you can't go wrong. The uptown filet is out of this world, and tries the crab cakes and calamari. If you like oysters, you'll love theirs. Desserts are great, too. Don't miss it!”

• I adore the location, food, and atmosphere.
• It can get really busy.

“This place has the best atmosphere and wonderful Italian food, especially for the money. You can go in classy evening attire and fit right in or go in your jeans and still fit in. It's also a great place to simply meet up with friends for cocktails...their bar area is lovely. My fiancée and I are even planning on having our rehearsal dinner there- that's how much we love it, our friends and family too! And a great tip- if you go on a Monday, you can get any bottle of wine half off as long as it is 50 dollars or less! ”

• Free tea refills.
• Food either too sweet or too salty...too much messege even after asking for it to not be included in the dish.

“I thought the food merely passable, especially the buffet. Everything is covered with the sweet sticky sauce, too much. I have a friend who could not have any peanuts or shellfish and after being assured the egg drop soup had neither she had a server reaction and had to be taken out in an ambulance. The owners were there and not at that time or any other were they concerned for my friend and her allergic reaction.”

• The food and cheap pitchers, good for a late night snack.
• You can't alter the sandwiches, you're stuck with the toppings, bad for vegans.

“The pizza is delicious, the draft beer comes in plastic pitchers but is cheap also, and the decor very tacky, but there is always a rowdy festive atmosphere to this place. I love getting pizza there late at night after a night out and so does every other drunk UGA student downtown. It's a fun place to get a quick bite in between the downtown action and the food has never been bad. The staff is colorful, a bit scary looking at times, but always professional, friendly, and attentive. It's good for a cheaper family outing early in the evening, but unless you want your kids to see what college life has to offer in a drinking town, don't take children there after 10 unless you are prepared to cover their ears. One of my favorite eateries.”

“The Uptown Stuffed Filet is the crown jewel of this restaurant. A filet butterfly cut and stuffed with bleu cheese, marvelous! I love this place.”

“I went to the Inoko Express on east-side Athens and it was amazing!! I've been on several occasions and have yet to be let-down. Great good, great staff, great environment and extremely convenient!”
