Alhambra Dinner Theater, The

• Hard to find decent live entertainment for this price.
• Food could be a little better. Although the show is live, the music is canned.

“The Alhambra is a dinner theater, so the emphasis is really on the show, not the food. The food is salad and a buffet, and is fairly average in terms of quality. The price of your ticket - which includes dinner and the show - covers the meal and basic beverages (water, tea, coffee). If you want any other beverages, including alcohol, then you have to pay extra. If you are in Jacksonville and looking for a terrific place to eat, then you probably want to look elsewhere, as I would call the food here average and not exceptional. But combined with the show, the package is a pretty good deal. The service is great. The server makes regular rounds to check on the tables and offer refills. Seating is not private, unless you are reserving for a large party you will find yourself sharing a table with other people. But that is normally what you get with this type of entertainment venue. Me and my wife have been to the Alhambra at least 6 times over the last couple years and feel it is a nice deal.”

• Sometimes gets pretty crowded.

“Fun! The staff all have musical talents. They perform on stage in between serving tables. They encourage you to stand on your chairs and dance with tambourines. Lots of audience participation. An awesome place to party.”

• It's across town!

“This is by far the best sushi I have ever eaten. I have tried several around Jax, Jax Beach and Orange Park and I always come back to this one. The service has always been friendly and it never take long to get the food. This is the only place I have found shrimp sauce at.”

• Food is good.
• Service is worst, you are constantly reminded how much you can eat.

“Let me start with something positive, food is very good. However, when it comes to service you constantly being reminded how much you can fill in a bowl. New rules keep being made that you can only have one rice bowl per table. If you have three people one bowl is not sufficient but that's what you get. There has been incident when person was asked to pay more because the bowl was filled more. The idea of this restaurant is to fill as much as you can in a bowl and have it grilled but that's not the case. I think it is the owner making all the new rules every few weeks. I used to like to go to this restaurant but lately it has gotten worse in service and all these new rules with what you can or cannot do.”

• Great food, nice portions, reasonable prices.

“I've been going to this restaurant for a good 12 years I can remember and have found that it is the best and most consistent Japanese restaurant in Jacksonville. Just a side note they have the BEST shrimp sauce I've ever had (and believe me, I've tried many from other restaurants.) I keep asking them how they make it but of course I do it in jest because I know it's a recipe secret. One day they'll break and tell me. Anyways, I know it's a trend now and I've seen a lot of new Japanese restaurants come and go, but the fact that Sakura's been in business so long tells me their doing something right.”

• Very clean, VERY friendly, GREAT food, my favorite sushi ever! I go all the time and they now even know what I want before I order it. Try the volcano rolls, simply AMAZING .

“Extremely friendly staff, very attentive. Clean, great food. I only eat my sushi from sushi house on bay meadows, they now even know that I always like my volcano rolls with an order of steamed rice. NO ONE makes a better volcano roll. I would recommend this sushi place to everyone! Perfect 10.”

• The actor who played scrooge was great.
• The food was the worst.

“We went and saw a Christmas carol here. The actor who played scrooge was great, but the sing was ok. There where a couple of singers off key, and one who kept singing higher than anyone else. Before the show we waited an hour to get served and while us where in line. Last call was made for the buffet and desert before we even sat down. Two words to describe the food as awful and cold. The mash potatoes where the worst and some of the food looked like slimy and just plain gross. What really got me was that the dinner rolls where not even cooked! With the money we spent, we had to pay for every soda we drank. That's right no refills. We where told that only drinks our admission got us was tea and coffee. Very disappointing experience.”

• The fact that they said they didn't have water.

“I took my fiancé there to what I thought would be a romantic dinner. The waiter sat us on the patio but never came to take our drink order for 20 minutes. He took two couple's orders who sat down after us before us. I pointed this out and he apologized but when my fiancé asked for some water, he said they were out of water? A restaurant with no water? Obviously he was not interested in us being there. It was a horrible experience and I warn you to save your money and eat at one of the other fine restaurants in San Marco.”

“I went in on a Monday to order a strawberry short cake for that Friday. I told the person who took the order I would be in first thing in the morning. The person taking the order asked the baker "if it's going to be picked up at 6:00 am on Friday, I need to put the order in for Thursday correct?" the baker replied "yes". I then called that morning to say that I needed to pick the cake up Wednesday morning not Friday. First, they had no record, and then they said "oh, this was put in for next week". Which I know was a lie because I watched the woman who took my order write the date 10/5. I go there Wednesday morning at 6:04 and the baker is there. I ask for the cake she says "I didn't know it was needed today. There is no time on this note, I don't have any strawberries". I tried to tell her she was right there when I gave the order on Monday but she didn't want to hear me. She just kept giving excuses. "Maybe if you come back later today Ill have the cake". I will never be in Worman's again. And I will tell as many people as I know about this.”

• Can't think of anything.

“We tried Mongos during a dance convention trip. It was a short walk over and smelled great! We ate around 4:00, there wasn't a wait and we got to sit along the river outside. We opted for the all-you-can-eat price, what a value! When we asked if the kids had an all-you-can-eat price our waiter said he'd have to charge us the adult price, we were ok with that. When he saw that they only went back one more time, didn't waste food & didn't get that much more he only charged us the kids price. Our waiter was very attentive but left us alone while eating. The kids actually ate new things and liked them because they got to compose their own meal and then watch it be cooked for them. The cooks were very nice to the kids and performed grill tricks for them. If we ever go back to J'ville this will be our first stop. We all (18) have been craving MONGOS since returning to GA.”

• Food preparation deplorable. Complete disregard for the customer.

“This restaurant is one of the best places I've eaten. I've been eating there since it opened around ten years ago. It has good prices, excellent food, and wonderful service. On the weekends, there is always a line out the door, which means that the wait may sometimes be long, but obviously the food is great because there is a wait. I recommend this restaurant for anyone that loves seafood or items from the grill.”

“I went to the I hop at 5221 university blvd, Jacksonville, this morning. The restaurant looks deteriorated, the ceiling is very dirty and a turn off, when you look at this black stained ceiling you start wondering how the kitchen looks like. The seats need to be re-upholstered, my seat had a big hole, and the aprons on the waiter look dirty and were stained. You need to invest some money on remodeling to bring the restaurant to the standards of other I hops I have visited.”

• Decor was very nice and the dining area clean.
• Food was not flavorful.

“The restaurant is located along Bay meadows, and close to 95. The decor, both inside and out is very pleasant and seems more upscale than most Chinese restaurants. I had ordered 3 dishes for take out to try a good variety from their menu. While waiting, I examined the dining area and their staff. They seemed friendly and kept the place clean. Thinking that the food would be just as pleasant, I was sorely disappointed. The dishes had no balance of sauces and flavors. Either too bland or too salty... it was as if the cook had never tried Chinese food before and tried serving it. I couldn't even categorize it as fusion since it tasted so bad.”

• Wine list was not very extensive.

“Benny as Steak and Seafood had an amazing panoramic view of the river. That is the first thing you notice when you walk through the door. The sunset reflecting off the water was a most elegant sight. We sat on the patio and really enjoyed the warm evening and the atmosphere. The server was very nice and mentioned the restaurant recently switched chefs and I must say this new chef did an amazing job with the presentation. I began my meal with a crab martini and for the entree I dined on one of the chef has signatures, the Filet Christian. It was a filet mignon topped with crab meat, shrimp, and a very flavorful sauce. The asparagus on the side was exactly what I needed to complete the meal. I passed on desert though when the server brought the menu with the pictures they did look very appetizing. The wine selection could have been more extensive but the cocktails were right on the money. All together it was an awesome evening and the next time I am in Jacksonville I will definitely return.”

• The shrimp at the hibachi grill are excellent.
• The service, the wait, the atmosphere, the decay of a one-great place.

“In my opinion, the quality of this restaurant has declined greatly. I used to recommend it, but lately I've noticed it is in sad need of repair. The last time I went in, I sat at the sushi bar (right in front of the glass) and after 45 minutes, I still had no drinks, and had yet to even speak to a wait person. I got up and left, and I don't think anyone noticed I was gone. What a disappointment. I am glad to have all of the OTHER sushi and hibachi restaurants around, because I have somewhere else to go. That's a shame. My first date with my husband was there, and it's not somewhere we would return to, due to the decline.”

• My favorite was the baked spaghetti.
• I have no negative words for Angelo's.

“I, too, loved Angelo's. It was our family's favorite restaurant and where we took all of our out-of-town guests when they visited us. We have missed it tremendously and were ecstatic to learn that a restaurant was re-opening in that location. Hope they serve the same Italian favorites that we enjoyed and that they can meet the level of service and quality of foods that Angelo's gave us consistently.”

• Sushi chefs in the sushi bar area are HILARIOUS. They don't have to talk to you but they usually do and they are very amiable.
• There is one male server there who looks and acts completely clueless every time we go. I'm assuming this is his first serving job? He's been there for a while though. I don't like when he waits on us.

“I've been to allot of sushi places in Jacksonville and I like this place the best. If you love saucy sushi you got to try the dragon roll. Best thing they make. Hibachi grill chefs are very funny and eager to please. Great place for a date or for a birthday celebration. Separate sushi bar for those who don't want to sit at the hibachi tables. Some of the servers are a little clueless and look out of place but you can't beat the food. I recommend it to all my friends.”

• Dirty, insects, basic English not with the servers, terrible experience!

“PITIFUL, we sat in the sushi bar area and very quickly we were overrun by ants. The waitress could not understand the most basic English, I'm patient but when the word 'vegetable' can't be understood that's awful The sushi was mediocre at best and the cleanliness of the place was bad. This might be a minor point but all the pictures on the walls were crooked, if the food was good that can be overlooked but overall it was a terrible experience that I will not do again.”

• Fresh food, you pick out how you want it spiced.
• Cannot name one. Great value, neat place. A no brainier.

“Cannot beat the quality of this food for the money. You pick the meats and veggies along with the seasoned oils and spices you want cooked. We sat outside overlooking the river and it was a beautiful evening. Fed a family of 4, (2 kids) and the bill was under $40.00 with drinks! We will make this place a family favorite and I highly recommend to try it out. Neat place!”

• Food, service and atmosphere make it a great place.
• Not good for handicapped It is up stairs and you have to get your own food.

“It is a good place to bring a first date or meet with a group of people. It is right on the river so you have a good view and the food is great. It is not loud so you can get to know the people you are with. ”
