User Reviews for San Francisco Restaurants« Go back to Aruba HotelsResearch User Reviews for San Francisco (21-40 of 115)Mifune Restaurant
“I love going to the Mifune Restaurant in San Francisco's Japan town because the food is good, the service is excellent and attentive-- and because it is non-ostentatious-- informal and comfortable. It is located inside the local Miyako shopping mall, which is right now decorated with Cherry Blossoms. If you are visiting San Francisco, you cannot go wrong getting lunch or dinner here. Another part of the restaurant's charm is its smallness-- it can get crowded sometimes. Once seated, however, you will never feel rushed.”

“It's my favorite of all the Henry's Hunan. I used to go to the original one on Kearny but it closed after the Loma Prieta earthquake. The food at this location has never been disappointing and I've been going there since the opening week. It can get a bit noisy but you can still hear your companions talk. The quality and tastes are great. Some of my favorite dishes are Henry's Special, Diana's meat pie, the dumplings, the noodles with pork and Hunan's special sauce, hot and sour vegetables, dried sauteed string beans rock cod. The rice plates are also yummy.”

“The atmosphere is absolutely delightful. Everyone speaks French but I'm afraid the menu might have been a bit too Americanized. The portions are terrific but many of the sandwiches are a bit too clean for my tastes- as in, a notch below superior flavor. The carnet de frites however, are spectacular. A great place for French students to practice their parlance. Whoever said that French people are rude have never eaten here- service was great and servers are always smiling. Quaint little press room for relaxed cafe dining and catching up on the news of the day! Grab a cup of coffee and stay a while!”

“I love this restaurant. I've been going there since I was like 7 years old and every time I go it's a memorable experience. The lighting is romantic and the food is absolutely amazing. It is well worth the price and wait..”

“We got hustled in for a cheap buffet of 11.99. When we left with nothing else but the buffet and soft drinks we were paying $30 for 2 crappy meals. The wait staff was attentive but rude at times. The restaurant was a terrible place to eat.”

“The service was impeccable, the food innovative and delicious. This is my favorite restaurant in San Francisco so far! The wait staff was extremely personable and their attention to detail was impeccable without being intrusive. It can be hard for a menu to stand out in a city with so many fine restaurants, but the menu at the Firefly was outstanding. It was inclusive of many tastes and levels of sophistication and the setting was elegant without being pretentious. An excellent dining experience for the price.”

“Without a doubt, this is the worst hotel I have even stayed in. The service was terrible. It was as if everyone was mad at the guests, including me. Rooms were extremely small, more like a closet. Not clean. I will never stay again.”

“My husband and I have been to Gary Danko 3 times and loved each time. The food was great and the service exquisite and we wanted to dine there again. So why one star? Because their reservations girl royally screwed up the last time we planned to dine there and the staff was basically indifferent. Weeks before our anniversary, I called the restaurant to try to make a reservation. The only spot for 2 available was at 10 pm. Though that's pretty late, I accepted the spot because I was told by the reservations person that I could also be put on a waiting list and if anything earlier came up, they'd call us so we could change the reservation. We made hotel reservations in the city and waited expectantly. Finally our Saturday came and we dropped off our child and went off to the city. Fortunately, my husband wanted all to go perfectly and at 5:30 he called to confirm our reservation. Lo and behold we did not have a reservation but were only on the waiting list. I can't tell you how furious I was, and still am. We were told rather condescendingly that we should have received a confirmation number had we actually had a reservation! How are you supposed to know that!? Not every restaurant gives confirmation numbers for heaven's sake! We were offered the option of dining in the bar on a first come, first served basis or waiting until 10:30 pm and possibly getting a table at that time. I'm sorry but 10:30 is a ridiculous time to sit down to dinner and the bar option was the same as not making reservations at all. All the hostess could say was "Sorry" but they made no effort to fix this screw up. We've decided Gary Danko has gotten way too full of itself. There are plenty of other restaurants in the city. Cityscape has a far better view and the service was wonderful. If you decide to try Gary Danko, either make sure they give you a confirmation number or keep a phone book nearby so you can find somewhere less pretentious to eat.”

“I am a Bay Area native, and have been to bars all around the area and have found none better than Jack's Cannery bar. Not only is it a great beer bar, 60+ beers on tap, 80+ total, the menu is far better than most bars you'd find, especially in SF (the calamari is outstanding!!). The staff is great, Saturdays usually has a one man band, at least for the last 2 years we've been going there, he is definitely a good break from the juke box, and very entertaining! Try the Magners cider, it is the same cider as Bullmers (sp.) in Ireland, well worth a pint!”

“We are locals and used to go to Yet Wah often for the "Wor Won Ton". Large portion, lots of vegetables, pork, chicken and shrimp and is full of very large won tons. It does tend to get a little "greasy" because the skin is often left on the chicken, but very tasty. Their other dishes are large portions, but just mediocre in flavor. Everything is reasonably priced, so you get a lot of "bang for the buck". It's a good place if you are on a budget and aren't real fussy about high class Chinese dining.”

“Big disappointment & something you should know - you will sharing a table with others, unless your party is about 7 (ours was 5)- felt like the airlines trying to smash in as many paying customers as possible. Went there years ago and loved it - this was a mediocre version of the start of this great show. Spent a bundle and left feeling ripped off. We will definitely not return for a third time.”

“If you want real Italian and the real San Francisco go to the Fior. We enjoyed our dinner (for 4) and shared several appetizers, the Caesar salad which was great and two veal dishes, a pepper steak with a grappa sauce and the fish of the day (sole). Wonderful house wines and the tiramisu are to die for. Maybe the best part was the professional waiters.”

“Great little restaurant, with a super fix price menu. Very New York style of class, the owners was great hosts and cooking in front of you is very French. Felt if I was in a great small French restaurant outside of Paris. A must for a romantic dinner or small dinner party of 8 or less. The fish was out of this world on the menu.”

“The show was unique and fun but not worth the cost. The food was mediocre, the drinks very expensive and while the show was fun in a silly sort of way, it wasn't great entertainment. Not worth it, value wise.”

“We took some friends there recently. I don't know how they choose the seating for people. We were there early and "decked" out and friendly but our table was right in front of the booth that handled the lights and music. I think it was table 10, it's not a good one since one is bothered by the constant lights from the back entering your field of vision and you're looking at most of the performances from behind. The mc during this performance was terrible. We could almost not tolerate her voice or her anymore. The food was okay not great and the portions small. In our row we were served last for all courses. The artists (not the mc) were wonderful and we enjoyed that part a lot. The price is a bit too high though.”

“I ordered the blackened swordfish one Thursday evening. The following Saturday morning at 5:30am I had to visit St Francis hospital having spent the previous 12 hours vomiting from severe food poisoning. It took two whole days out of my 6 day visit to San Francisco. Definitely would not recommend.”

“This restaurant is above all, charming. I have passed it several times and it always seems busy-particularly on weekends for what I assume must be brunch. The menu is a tad on the limited side but what I had was fantastic! I had their burger and a goats cheese soufflé type starter which was to die for. Don't go here if you are on a diet as the desserts are amazing. Have the chocolate cup with chocolate cookies with fresh cream. Do I have more cellulite? - Yes. Do I think it was worth every minute? - Yes.”

“The worst dinner meal in many a year. The place smells of cleaning solution and is dirty (look at the light fixtures). The calamari was very good. We should have stopped there. The scallops were bitter and tasted of burned grease from grilling. It was sent back. The replacement meal had the same burned grease taste. The other dish ordered was deep fried breaded prawns. They must have been cooked a day before. Dried up! Rice seemed to be last week's leftovers. The green beans were dried up and not cut able. We couldn't wait to leave.”

“We were hungry, and saw this nice-looking place above grant in Chinatown. White linens, above street-level, it seemed like a gem. It was a turd. My partner and I ordered familiar dishes to us, paper-wrapped chicken, fried quail, and entrees kung pao chicken and scallops with snow peas dish. I specifically asked if the scallop dish was a "brown," sauce, to which the waiter said, "yes." I asked for something a little sweeter, a little spicier, such as general's chicken sauce or something. He said, "we don't have that," and continued a broken, hasty reason why. I asked if there were any different sauces, even Szechwan, to which he said, "yes, spicy yes, sweet no." he wrote something down and was suddenly gone. My quail came. It was great. Tiny, but it's a quail. I then received a brown sauce scallop dish with crushed red peppers in it. I sighed. I sent it back with the waiter trying arguing with me, saying that's what I wanted. Refusing to argue, I simply asked for the menu again the kung pao chicken came out, loaded with mostly asparagus (which was fresh,) and the blandest, somewhat dog-food smelling sauce my partner had ever had. He was hungry and ate it anyway. I re-ordered something called rockfish with sweet corn sauce. Under fried fish came my way with what tasted and smelled like a cold can of cream of corn was dumped on top. I sent it back and asked for the manager with a more displeased waiter. The manager luckily was a very nice man that quickly took all problematic items off the bill, and I asked him to give waiter $5, since we were both being kind of a pain in the neck to each other. Fair trade. This restaurant seems geared towards elderly and international tour groups, since huge parties came and went like clockwork throughout our visit. A theory as to the bland, un-Chinese nature of the food: "try and satisfy all." Avoid this place if you have ever had good Chinese American or true Chinese food.”

“It is in a great location, North Beach, especially if you want to enjoy good food without the tourist crowd. The restaurant was very clean and presentable. The service was friendly and efficient, nice people. I was impressed with the quality of the food. My wife and I ordered varied dishes, banana walnut pancakes, side of eggs, bacon cheeseburger with fries, etc. The breakfast was scrumptious, light, very fresh. The bacon cheeseburger was moist, cooked just right, very tasty. The prices were very moderate and budget friendly. Since we travel to SF 4 or 5 times during the year, we will make Curly's our place to eat.”

“A few of these reviews state Gaylord's has poor service. I couldn't disagree more. I travel to San Francisco very often and make it a point to eat at this restaurant. I have never had any service problems; the food has never been anything but good; the atmosphere has always been pleasant. This is quite frankly the closest thing you will get to authentic-tasting Indian food this side of the States. Not to mention several political heavyweights have also frequented the establishment, from senators to mayors to foreign officials. It's a very good restaurant with a wonderful ambiance.”

“Being born and raised in India but living in USA, I am always on the lookout for good Indian food here. I had heard mixed stories about Gaylord India (Sausalito) and I decided to try it. At first I was wowed by its spectacular location, great views of the SF Bay and beautiful rural building. Once inside, the decor was simple yet elegant and seating was quick and courteous. But then the negatives started pouring out. 1. My friend received a phone call and since it was cold and windy outside, he moved to a quiet area inside the restaurant (a side room that had a door to the exterior deck). Towards the end of his phone call, he saw that someone from the deck was knocking on the door asking him to open it. Since there was no one else in the room, he opened it and the person turned out to be another customer. But soon the head waiter burst into the room and very rudely asked him why he had opened the door. My friend, shocked at his behavior, told him this person was knocking from outside and there was no one else in the room to open the door. The head waiter angrily retorted - "I do not care. That door is not supposed to be opened". My friend told him there was no such sign on the door or near it, to which the waiter simply replied - "I do not care" and walked away. 2. While placing the order, I notice that Onion Kulcha was on the menu. So I asked the head waiter (the same one as above), if they could make me a Plain Kulcha instead. Inexplicably, the waiter seemed amused at my question and then proceeded to educate me that a Plain Kulcha is the same as a Plain Naan - a Naan stuffed with onion is called Onion Kulcha! That was preposterous not just because a Plain Kulcha is in fact, very different from Naan but because he being a head waiter at a famous restaurant was supposed to know that. And in any case, he should not try to correct a customer with a sneer on his face. I silently let it go with a non-indulgent "I see", but I could not help wonder if this was one of those places that did a good job at maintaining a facade of authenticity. 3. My doubts were confirmed at the quality of the food itself. While some of the items were good - the Bengan Bharta, Bhindi Masala and Naan for example, most of the others were rather bad. The Rotis were tasteless and rubbery, the Prawn Biryani didnt taste like Biryani at all and the Sindhi Aloo Tikki was literally, pedestrian; Far from being gourmet, these rated well below Tikkis from New Delhi's ordinary street vendors. 4. Furthermore, the head waiter misled us on the size of the order of Rotis. While placing the order, when I cautioned a friend that Rotis could be large and heavy, the waiter advised that on the contrary, their Rotis were considered light-eating. So we ordered a whole bunch (in addition to Naan and Biryani). But when the order arrived, we realized that the Rotis were anything but light eating and that meant, much of it went uneaten. 5. The biggest disappointment was the Paneer Tikka. I cant even begin to describe how bad it was - hard, stale, flavorless, no condiments, no garnishings, bad color and horribly presented. One measure of an Indian restaurant's worth is how well it can prepare Paneer Tikka - a very important staple in India. Gaylord India Sausalito failed miserably. The $10 Paneer Tikka from the small joint near my residence rates infinitely better. This dish was a mockery of fine dining and I cant believe that a supposedly top restaurant could serve that abomination to their customers.”

“I've been holding my annual client dinner at the restaurant for the pest 3 years. The first year was the best. The food and the service that I got from Larry stone and his staff was superb. Then the problem started last year, when my wife find a worm in her salad and there response was "the salad is organic", I guess they don't wash the food before they prepare it because "its organic" this year I had over 30 of my clients attend the dinner but it was a nightmare preparing for the event. I had no help from the restaurant staff; I had to call the private dinning coordinator to set up everything for the event. I've spent over $6,000 a year for the past 3 years at this restaurant and the service is getting worse. For those of you thinking of having a client event at this restaurant, I would think twice. ”

“I came in for breakfast and loved the crab cakes eggs Benny. Atmosphere was soothing and service was missing something. The waitress actually brought bill and tried to wrap up the food I was still eating! When I mentioned later that this made me uncomfortable she explained that most clients are in a hurry and she wants to help them get going. Yeah! That service might work at a roadside "shovel and run" diner honey, but I paid 20$ for eggs and expect to sit and enjoy by meal.”

“Disappointing: overpriced, lacking flavor contrary to the many raves here, our visit was underwhelming. The shellfish risotto was awful: chewy, and totally lacking fish flavor. The shellfish with it were tasteless. I thought it was some leftover rice that they threw some scallops and mussels on. I would have sent it back but a friend in our party had also ordered it and she was too shy to confront the waiter. The fish linguini was barely passable. The overly theatrical Italian accent of the waiter was silly.”

“I thought this restaurant was fantastic. The service was wonderful and the food was even more impressive. We were treated very well the entire time that we were there and didn't have a single complaint about our experience. My duck was extremely good, but the dessert was the highlight of the meal. I believe it was a passion fruit mousse, and it was one of the best ever. The restaurant is upscale without seeming overly formal and added to the experience.”

“The food is very good. It is the service that is the problem, specifically the hostess. After telling my party of five that there was to be a forty minute wait, she summoned us from a nearby bar after only five minutes, then kept us standing in the middle of a crowded dining area, jostled by wait staff and patrons for forty minutes before seating us! I have eaten here several times over the past years, but I won't do so again.”

“Whirlwind Valentine's Day Trip to San Francisco with wife. Stayed at Prescott Hotel (which we both highly recommend) and weren't very interested in the hotel's restaurant, so booked Zingari's well in advance (it is about five doors from the hotel). Very quick seating for such a busy night, the water and bread arrived even before we were into the awkward small talk phase. We note with interest the tromp l'oueille scenery around us and the boisterous (if not to say boorish) table of six beside us raucously recounting their day in the City. Waitress arrived in decent length of time, very friendly and helpful - we are not gastronomes and so sometimes need a little help deciphering menu language. Wife's crab cakes and my Caesar salad both arrived well before we would have though possible on one of the busiest restaurant nights of the year. Both appetizers good, Caesar was constructed with Romaine hearts, not shreds, and was a little bland for my taste. Wife reports crab cakes excellent. Main course - Seafood risotto for better half, chicken for me, both good but not particularly outstanding. Dessert choices somewhat limited (don't know whether this is only a problem on the prix fix menu) and they were out of the creme brule my wife had craved all day. Both of us had the Tiramisu, which I think may have waited too long in a refrigerator - the lady fingers were soggy and the texture of the entire dish seemed mushy. Long stemmed rose and huge chocolate covered strawberry were a nice after-dinner touch while we listened to the jazz coming from the bar below. And finally, the prix was indeed fixed, I don't think you need to fix it so haut. Overall a rather unremarkable meal in a nice setting with excellent service. ”

“Be sure to have the crab salad. They plate a bed of spring greens that have first been tossed in a vinaigrette, then mound the lettuce with a huge amount of fresh crab. Surrounding the greens, only on the circumference of the plate, are fresh fruits (yes, fruit), tomato wedges and boiled egg. They serve the Louie dressing on the side. Absolutely delicious.”

“We have been going to Morton's for years. This last visit, December 3rd was the worst! I have never had such a poor quality Rib Eye steak anywhere! And, the prices are outrageous for the poor quality meat. My wife had the Filet and it was not much better! Also they mark up their wine prices to more than an acceptable level. Buena Vista Chardonnay that sells for $16.99 a bottle in the stores (sometimes as high as $19) was priced at $12.95 a glass. We will never return to Morton's in San Francisco!”

“Found Sinbad¿s driving by and decide to drop in. Boy, what a disappointment. After entering the place seemed to smell musty but rustic so we decided to eat. Waiter could have cared less about being a waiter. He and the bus boy never brought the items you asked for had to ask 3 times for ice tea, parmesan cheese (out of a can, not fresh). I had the Clams and pasta Alfred...the pasta was not drained properly and was added to the Alfred which watered it down extensively making it taste like hot cheesy water. Daughter got the $34 fillet, medium. The supposed 8 oz steak came burned to a crisp and was about 5 oz. My daughter was so upset she didn¿t want anything else and just bread, which by the way was not the good SF sour dough. Wife had shrimp which was average but the rice tasted like rusty dishwater and veggies were mushy. No one asked how our dinner was, thanked us or seemed to care about anything. Paid the bill (minus the steak) and left a small tip. The best thing to happen to this place is for it to burn down, anything less would be a crime.”

“Visiting from TX 10/5/06, last evening in San Francisco and my first Thai food. Absolutely delicious! On the menu, the Red Curry Duck caught my eye and I'm so glad it did. Succulent duck, zucchini, red bell pepper and chunk pineapple in the most delicious curry I¿ve ever had. The Stay beef appetizer was excellent, too. I'm back in TX trying to recreate the curry dish. “Ny husband and I hosted 5 young adults at Bix for dinner. The waiter let us know that Bix is best known for martinis and was enthusiastic about the menu. The First Course marrow bones "St. John" was a shadow of the original version created by Fergus Henderson at his London "St. John" restaurant - he would have been dismayed. The rack of lamb was wonderful, the Kobe beef was disappointing - the chef should try Snake River Kobe - there IS a difference. The restaurant was very noisy and, while the wait staff was attentive and unobtrusive, our waiter was slower to respond, especially when only two desserts were ordered - have you ever NOT been given forks all around when it is obvious that you are sharing all of the menu items?? - and when we asked for more water. We ordered an array of dishes and most were quite good with the exceptions noted. Conversation beyond your immediate neighbor was next-to-impossible. ”

“Enjoyed everything. When we sat down they gave us this delicious dip with fresh vegetables which is we found very generous and different than just getting bread - but they did serve bread when our meal started to arrive. The dishes are well prepared, fresh and very simple, and the portions are what they should be - for one. Our service was extraordinary and the wine that was selected from our lovely waiter was terrific. And yes, save room for dessert as they are yummy. ”

“Incredible Italian food. I travel all over the world for business and this place puts out some of the best Italian dishes I have had outside Italy. When we come to SF we never miss having a dinner at this charming trattoria. A must place to visit when in San Fran.”
