Rajaji Curry House Inc
Feb 1, 2008 by maxpr1 from san antonio

Overall Rating: 5 User Rating Score: 5
Food:[5] • Service:[6] • Atmosphere:[6]

  • White tablecloths, better food than their other Indian Competitor on the street.
  • It all looked the same. Lentils in gravy or something similar.

“I've eaten here twice now. I was excited to return, but was disappointed in this second visit. True to form, the service was good. The ambiance with white linen tablecloths surpassed that of other Indian restaurant one to two doors away. The food last time was great. This time, someone did not understand the esthetic appeal of food. The first four buffet type food receptacles all looked like beans or lentils or something of the same shape in gravy. You only got to anything with a different esthetic appeal in the last two food receptacles which was forms of chicken. Whoever set up the first four servers of four types of round nondescript items in a gravy type sauce must not have thought much about the appearance. I'm sure each tasted great, but it looked like one after another of a variation on a theme. I was very disappointed as I only get to visit this restaurant once a year during our annual convention. Based on my experience this time, I'd avoid both Indian restaurants near the Marriott. Management needs to wake up and offer their customers something that appears other than lentils as variations on a theme in four separate receptacles. Sad. It is the nicer of the two Indian restaurants on the street and I'd still rather re-visit them than their neighbors. At least those wonderful white tablecloths even during lunch mad me feel special. This restaurant and others on the street capitalize from their location near the Omni and Marriott. It's somewhat sad as they have much potential.”

Taste Of India
Feb 1, 2008 by maxpr1 from san antonio

Overall Rating: 5 User Rating Score: 5
Food:[6] • Service:[4] • Atmosphere:[4]

  • Location.
  • Could be a good dining experience with minimal management input.

“I've eaten here twice now. I understand why I was reticent to visit a second time. We were offered one wine selection, basically the house red or white. The food was o.k. No cloth tablecloths to enhance the dinner time dining experience. Food was o.k., but nothing special. I'd probably seek out other restaurants in the future for something special. This restaurant and others on the street capitalize from their location near the Omni and Marriott, not on their dining experience. It's sad as they have much potential.”

Murphys Irish Pub
Feb 1, 2008 by maxpr1 from San Antonio

Overall Rating: 5 User Rating Score: 5
Food:[5] • Service:[5] • Atmosphere:[5]

  • Convenient location to the Omni Shoreham.
  • Not what we'd hoped for.

“My two friends and I visited last Sunday. The spinach artichoke dip on the menu was not available and we were offered the chips and salsa. The salsa was predominated by onions and I'd not order again. This is probably more of a drinking than an eating establishment. The waitress was nice when we ordered and when the meals were delivered. We never saw her again and we had to finally ask someone else for a check. O.K. Nothing bad. Nothing great.”

A V Italian Restaurant
Jan 10, 2008 by Joslyn from boothbay

Overall Rating: 8 User Rating Score: 8
Food:[8] • Service:[8] • Atmosphere:[10]

  • Atmosphere, food, music.
  • Not much, given the over yuppiefied restaurants of today.

“Have been going there since I was in high school - 1960's - rude- no - quirky, yes. Have lived away from DC since 1976 - but still travel there on a regular basis & wouldn't miss AV. Dark even in the day - chairs squeak against the marble floors - Remember AV greeting customers - opera playing. Wine in juice glasses from a pitcher. Portions are Hugh & are not "gourmet", but honest and straight forward. The stuffed artichokes, Bucatini Carbonara, Cannelloni - the best. Homemade sausages. Stuff your stroller lady - get a sitter. If they are closing - a huge loss - as we were planning to come in February.”

Haad Thai Restaurant, Inc
Nov 12, 2007 by ason from D.C

Overall Rating: 10 User Rating Score: 10
Food:[10] • Service:[9] • Atmosphere:[9]

  • Great food! That's not expensive good portions friendly staff and service.
  • There is only one location in DC.

“There are many Thai restaurants in the DC area. However, you would be pressed to find one that has the feeling of the mom and pop style restaurant. The service is really good and more importantly than the service is their food. I will and have in the past revisited a restaurant with poor service because the food was good. Had Thai has 2 of 2 in this column. Their menu covers all the basic Thai dishes and covers them well. I would have to say. Having lived just 2 blocks from the restaurant and eating out 4 5 times a week, I can honestly say that I have eaten everything on their menu at least twice. The great thing is that their dishes hold their quality from the 1st time to the 10th time you have it, quality control a big yes! Bottom line: I have had more expensive, smaller portions, at a top end Thai place in NYC and it does not even compare to this friendly little place in the heart of DC. I love it! I am sure having the owner be Thai who brings in great Thai chefs helps a little).”

Sequoia Restaurant
Oct 29, 2007 by Melissa

Overall Rating: 1 User Rating Score: 1
Food:[1] • Service:[1] • Atmosphere:[7]

  • Nice views, good place to get a drink.
  • Bad service, awful food, and an overpriced cheap restaurant.

“Sequoia's glory has declined rapidly in the past year. The staff was too unprofessional and poorly dressed to represent a fine establishment. The hostesses looked like they were 12 years old and were dressed so casually, that I wasn't sure if they had just wandered in off of the street. When our waiters tried to make up for the fact that they left us sitting at our table for 15 minutes without so much as a greeting, they continued to fumble awkwardly throughout the meal. Though the service had little hope of improving during our meal, we remained optimistic about the food. The vegetables were not fresh, the steaks were tough and drenched in an awful cover-up sauce, and the potatoes tasted overdone. We were ultimately so disappointed that we will never return to sequoias for a meal again. To celebrate our anniversary, we had looked forward to a romantic evening dining in dc with a lovely view. All we really got was the view. When our waiter asked if we were celebrating a special occasion, we explained that it was our anniversary. Not expecting anything extraordinary, we were temporarily impressed to have the manager visit us later in the meal. The experience turned confusing and awkward when the manager continued to stand at the table and say nothing. We smiled awkwardly until he left. When we received our dessert, there was a candle in it and our waiter made a little fuss about the celebration, which was ok. However when we received our check, the dessert was not complimented. Even an average restaurant will compliment a birthday or anniversary dessert. Don't bother sending the manager over to interrupt my meal if you're not going to comp my dessert! Sequoia's is an overpriced restaurant for a cheap experience. If you ever want to visit sequoia's for the view, and then just stay at the bar upstairs. Appetizers and entrees are just not worth it! .”

Oya Restuarant & Lounge
Sep 22, 2007 by Lillian from DC

Overall Rating: 7 User Rating Score: 7
Food:[5] • Service:[8] • Atmosphere:[9]

  • Great atmosphere.
  • Sounds crazy, but mosquitoes were biting us the whole time, and the sushi was terrible.

“First impression was great with nice decor and a chic interior, so naturally the expectations were high. Had three types of sushi rolls and was disappointed in all three: tuna avocado (made it spicy), yellowtail, and crunchy tuna roll. We were more than disappointed in the make rolls. The first two which came out (tunas) were overwhelmed with straight "heat" for spice instead of a subtle and complex spice you would expect mixed into the actual inside of the roll.”

Horace Dickey Seafood Carryout
Sep 19, 2007 by Corneilous from Foster

Overall Rating: 4 User Rating Score: 4
Food:[1] • Service:[1] • Atmosphere:[1]

  • That it was black owned.
  • From beginning to end.

“This place was horrific. The place was very unsanitary with flies everywhere. Refrigeration was poor and dirty. The walls look as if they haven't been clean in years. Floor was very dirty. Old cash register. There was no menu. The billboard that displays the menu was very empty and dirty. None of the two guys washed there hands after preparing my food and fixing the next gentleman food. If you travel at night to this hole in the wall don't travel alone you could fear for your safety. People loitering on the outside of the building. Now fly season is over and why were there more flies inside than there were outside. But the restaurant fits the original people of DC it is only a reflection of that. Now this place was featured on Rachel Ray and that is what inspired me to come. Mac and Cheese old and these are can greens. I was so happy to give them my money and give them the 2 dollars and change to see if that could help it really needs it.”

  • Never get a mixed drink in a Chinese restaurant, they don't understand them.

“This is wonderful Sichuan food. I work nearby and ate there at least once a week for years, and then they closed because of a lease problem. Two years later, they have renovated into a nearby, smaller space, and it's fresh, clean, nicely decorated with Chinese art, and the food is just simply some of the best Chinese available in DC. My favorite Chinese restaurant. I often took business clients there, and will now again.”

  • Service and food are out of this world! Great!
  • None.

“This is the best restaurant I have ever been in. The first time my husband and I went, we were supposed to go to a show down the street and it was taking a while for the food to come out. We asked the very polite waiter if he knew when it would be ready since were getting close to show time. The next thing we knew, 3 waiters and the manager were quickly bringing out our food and the manager said that because it took longer than usual for us to get our food, for us to please come back after the show for drinks and dessert on the house. We never expected that. We went back after the show and the manager was there waiting for us and followed through with her promise while showing genuine interest in how we liked the show. You just don't get that kind of service everyday and I would recommend this place to anyone near there. We have been back several times ourselves and have always had outstanding service and food. All 10's from this happy customer!”

Tony Cheng Seafood Restaurant Inc
Aug 12, 2007 by C from Philadelphia

Overall Rating: 1 User Rating Score: 1
Food:[1] • Service:[1] • Atmosphere:[3]

  • Had pretty good steamed pork buns (dim sum).
  • Gouging customers for second-rate "specials".

“Although it looks more promising than the surrounding Chinese dining establishments, it is clearly priced a little higher, offers no real additional value, and in my opinion was predatory. The place was quite crowded at 2pm and we were seated next to the untidy holding tanks which contained fish used for meals. The tanks were open, and the aroma in this area was distinctly "eau de pond". The DC board of health should investigate the unsanitary splashing which arises from the aeration system and the periodic harvesting of fish by the staff. Perhaps as additional ambiance, a fish was netted and carried through the dining room while we were there. Four of the five dishes that we ordered: one chicken, one pork, one beef, one vegetable, were high on sauce and all tasted very similar. Given the premium price, the meat content was low for thhe chicken and pork dishes. The closing dining surprise came with the accompanying seafood dish. We asked for a recommendation from the waiter for a seafood dish; he took the opportunity to recommend their "special", which was Dungeness crab in a ginger sauce. It featured pieces of crab in shell (~6 legs, 1 small claw, and the empty carapace); it was also virtually impossible to eat since the crab was overcooked, tasteless, and bonded to the shell. The sticky, unspectacular sauce merely made the process of liberating the crab meat more difficult. In retrospect, I strongly suspect, as another reviewer has suggested, that the food (in this case, crab) was previously cooked and recycled into our daily special. I mentioned our dissatisfaction with the crab when the waiter reappeared after the meal. He smiled and just presented the bill, which included a $45 charge for the crab dish. Note: that virtually every entree on the menu was around $10-25. At this point I was pretty sure the waiter had knowingly pushed the leftovers on us. He actually had the gall to follow me out of the restaurant to insist on a tip, indicating he had already given me a big discount on the crab "special".”

“I remember the food being quite delicious during previous visits when I was younger. However the most recent time I tried to eat at A.V. (this evening), I was verbally assaulted by the owner because my baby's stroller was in his way. This is not an exaggeration. The entire bar area where we were waiting to be seated became completely silent as the owner screamed at me in his loudest voice, then ordered me out of his restaurant. I was holding my child in my arms at that time. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.”

“I visited Kramer books weekend of Mar 2 for breakfast having been book shopping the day before. The first impression is quite favorable especially when you enter the place via the bookstore. The staff were nice and competent. The downside had only to do with the food. I ordered the eggs benedict with smoked salmon and potatoes home fries. The eggs were runny raw and English muffin was not toasted. Home fries were oily greasy and undercooked. Smoked Salmon was good as were the complimentary muffins and fresh squeezed OJ. All of this for $15.50 seemed like a lousy value for me. ”

Sorbet between courses, and impeccable service, this restaurant is a wonderful place to eat and create a memory, an experience. I had the grand mariner shrimp entree, and couldn't believe the dreamy taste in my mouth. Definitely worth the money, though the dessert left something to be desired. Stunning food.”

La Perla Restaurant Of Washington
Oct 22, 2006 by Bill from Chicago

Overall Rating: 3 User Rating Score: 3
Food:[7] • Service:[1] • Atmosphere:[1]

  • Linguine and clams (white sauce) good.
  • From owner on down, no one offered any apology for a truly disappointing experience.

“The concierge at the Fairmont Hotel recommended and made our reservation for Saturday night so we were expecting a wonderful evening. Our experience, along with the other reservation holders inside the front door at La Perla was beyond disappointing. They obviously had overbooked reservations and the owner, maitre de and one other gentleman working the main floor were out of control. Not only were they one hour behind reservation times the maitre de kept running outside to handle problems with valet parking. Once seated, we stared another 20 minutes at what looked like two wonderful baskets of bread and butter. The problem was we didn't have any plates, or silverware, or napkins, or water or a cocktail and most importantly no mention of "we're sorry we're a bit overwhelmed tonight". Nothing. My entree arrived as the other members of my family had finished eating due to preparing linguine and clams in white sauce (waiter¿s suggestion) as a red sauce. Again, no apology. Neither bottle of wine comped, no dessert comped, no coffee comped, anything. Suggestion: leave La Perla off your list. DC has too many other wonderful Italian opportunities. The ego here seems to have gotten too big. Not having future patrons to serve might afford the owner at La Perla more time to enjoy his dated collection of celeb photos inside the front door. We thought they got real old with as much time as we were forced to stare at them.”

“Honestly, the service was so bad that we didn't even get to the food. The silverware was dirty. The server came over to ask if we wanted anything to drink--we said water, and she promptly forgot about us for half an hour. And when we called her over after that time, she had forgotten we had asked for water. But really, the worst part is that the manager became bellicose and personally insulting when we asked for a substitution that wasn't allowed. Absolutely inappropriate. A simple "well, we can do that, but you'll have to pay a fee" would have been fine. Calling us dishonest probably wasn't necessary.”

Food:[10] • Service:[8] • Atmosphere:[9]

  • Best Porterhouse
  • Used to a different breed of wait staff. Maitre'd very personable, waiter was okay, but give me NYC or Chicago for wait staff.

“Expensive, but well worth it. ”

Galileo Restaurant
Aug 16, 2006 by Lauren from Washington

Overall Rating: 7 User Rating Score: 7
Food:[8] • Service:[3] • Atmosphere:[2]

  • Good food, enticing menu.
  • Poor service, outdated decor, stuffy and pretentious.

“We arrived 20 minutes before our reservation time and were seated 25 minutes after our reservation time. The bar area looked like a bad country club bar that desperately needed to be remodeled -- and the lights dimmed. I went for restaurant week with friends who could not otherwise afford the meal. I can afford the regular meals, but I would never go back. Although the service was quick, it was abrupt, condescending and they even removed my main course before I was finished. They couldn't get us out of there fast enough. They simply shouldn't offer the restaurant week deal if they are going to make the experience so unpleasant. I have no reason to go back. Although the food was pretty good, I'd rather pay full price somewhere else, and it's likely that my friends would too. Don't waste your money here.”

Kam Fong Restaurant
Aug 14, 2006 by Jerry from Chicago

Overall Rating: 2 User Rating Score: 2
Food:[2] • Service:[3] • Atmosphere:[2]

  • Service is acceptable.
  • Additional charges on bill, cold foods, and tight space.

“Please watch out for this restaurant. They put additional charges on your bill without notifying you. You might find the total of your bill almost 30% more than it should cost. Just be careful. The foods were cold and service was average. I was disappointed about this restaurant.”

Cafe Milano
Jul 30, 2006 by David from Arlington

Overall Rating: 1 User Rating Score: 1
Food:[3] • Service:[1] • Atmosphere:[5]

  • Attractive, trendy crowd make for a promising atmosphere while waiting for dinner.
  • For these prices, better food and service are required.

“Clearly, a nightmare restaurant experience -- arriving at 10 PM on a Saturday for dinner, my friend & I were served the wrong entries It took 5 min. to flag the wait staff down to make the correction, which was done without apology. The pasta was undercooked. The service was terrible. No one returned to ask how the food was, water glasses were never re-filled, and we had to ask several times for bread for the table. Near the end of the main course, while we were still eating, our silverware and oil was unexpectedly whisked off the table, apparently signifying that we were done. Obviously, there were open tables and the restaurant was not closing soon, so it was unclear what the hurry was. We cut our losses and left for dessert elsewhere. You get much better service at McDonald's, at a small fraction of the price.”

Habana Village
Jul 25, 2006 by Will from Silver Spring, MD

Overall Rating: 8 User Rating Score: 8
Service:[9] • Atmosphere:[10]

  • Liked the ambiance and the Latin people there. Fun dancing.
  • Crowded and hot; need fans and greater space.

“I have not eaten at Habana Village, but I have danced there and I thoroughly enjoy it. They do a great job of bringing in live bands that are excellent. I like the atmosphere, but it can get a little stifling and full as the night goes on. All in all, I like it there and will go back. If I were going only for the dancing though, I would hit up Zanzibar instead. ”

La Perla Restaurant Of Washington
Jul 19, 2006 by Richard F Douglas Jr. Esq from Chicago/New York

Overall Rating: 9 User Rating Score: 9
Food:[9] • Service:[10] • Atmosphere:[9]

  • The mozzarella splashed with extra Virgin Olive oil appetizer. Ummm.
  • Nothing to complain about except occasionally having to search a while for parking.

“La Perla' is the Restaurant I never fail to visit on my trips to DC. The Commodore'/owner never fails to impress me and my party with the freshest of veggies, cheeses, meats and sauces.( He's even gone so far as to prepare a new dish for me and my party on the spot) I always get a sincere friendly greeting at the door as I enter and after being seated the staff is always right there to attend to my every need throughout the dining experience. 'La Perla' also has a fine Wine list, to boot! overall It's a place that I will go out of my way to visit when I'm in town.”

A V Italian Restaurant

Overall Rating: 9 User Rating Score: 9
Food:[9] • Service:[7] • Atmosphere:[10]

  • The pay-phone INSIDE the restaurant.
  • My Father-in-law wasn't so hot on the fish dish he got.

“We lived there for 4 years, and out of the whole of DC, this place was in our top 5! The food is awesome, & the atmosphere made it feel like you'd left the states and traveled to Sicily. Very fun for those in the pre-children stage.”

  • Food, location, atmosphere.
  • Tight seating.

“This is my favorite place to dine in Washington, DC the atmosphere, location and food are excellent. It is a little pricey but well worth the cost. The only negative is that the restaurant is so good that it is usually packed with patrons which makes for very tight seating arrangements.”

Jaleo Restaurant
Mar 18, 2006 by Peg from Vienna, VA

Overall Rating: 8 User Rating Score: 8
Food:[9] • Service:[7] • Atmosphere:[8]

  • An abundance of unique dishes from different parts of Spain, with many intriguing vegetarian choices.
  • Waiters are rushed (Jaleo is popular), the food pricey ( good ingredients, well and quickly made to order).

“Delicious regional foods from Spain in elegant surroundings. Portions are supposed to be small, this is a tapas restaurant, and tapas are little plates with small, well-prepared servings of any of a long list of fascinating and distinctive dishes on them. One of the fun things about going to this or other tapas places is that if you go with several friends, you can share the plates and try many different tastes. Each plate is delivered to your table as soon as it's ready, which means that you keep being served a new sampling of just-prepared food. The waiters have always been in a hurry when I've been there, so the service feels a bit impersonal, but not unfriendly. The place is definitely pricey, though the individual dishes don't cost much, but since they're not big portions and the tendency is to order several, the bill can mount very quickly. I only go on special occasions. I should add that the place is extremely popular, so get a reservation or be prepared for a substantial wait. Even with a reservation, it may take a little while for a waiter to get to you. Location, wonderful, right on the corner (so lots of windows), next to the Shakespeare Theatre and the Verizon Center. Two Metro stations (Gallery Place and Naval Archives) are close by and Metro Center is not very far.”

German Deli
Mar 18, 2006 by Peg from Vienna, Va.

Overall Rating: 8 User Rating Score: 8
Food:[8] • Service:[8] • Atmosphere:[8]

  • Reasonable prices, good selection, good food, good location too.
  • Acoustics aren't perfect, when the place is crowded, it can get a little hard to converse.

“First, please note that the name of this establishment is "Cafe Mozart," not "German Deli"! It's true there's a deli attached. In fact, you must walk thru it to reach the restaurant, and you can sit there and have a snack if you like, but the cuisine is at least as Austrian as it is German (with a little Hungarian thrown in), and the atmosphere is homey and refined at the same time. The napkins are cloth, the waiters attentive, and the food good, but the prices are quite reasonable and the spirit is gemutlich. The elderly lady who helped to start the place long ago hovers and makes sure all is well, and the wait staff tends to be cheerful and helpful. Many have been there for quite a while. A room is available for private parties, if you have one, a lady in Austrian costume may show up, accordion at the ready, and offer to entertain you, she's a stitch, but it's not obligatory. The menu has many choices, and though there's lots here for meat-eaters, good German sausages, Viener schnitzel, and quite decent burgers, there are a few nice vegetarian choices as well. I like the egg rosti and the Portobello mushroom schnitzel. The plateful of assorted salads is pleasant too, but since they feature a lot of pickled veggies I feel overdosed on vinegar after a while. Some nice desserts too. This is not a slick, fancy magnet for the rich and powerful, but it is a pleasant, civilized place for a good meal. BTW, the location, near Metro Center and McPherson Square Metro stops, across from the NY Ave. Presbyterian Church and close to the IADB and the National Museum for Women in the Arts, couldn't be better, but you'll have to look carefully for the rather small storefront.”
