User Reviews for Scottsdale Restaurants« Go back to Spring House Travel GuideResearch User Reviews for Scottsdale (1-20 of 44)Roy's Scottsdale
“Last year for Mother's day I took my mom and family to Roy's Scottsdale, and we were completely blown away. I'm a foodie, and have traveled quite extensively, but the service was on point, as was the quality of the food. Lets start with the bloody Mary's and guava mimosa we ordered. It was then followed with delicious seafood: lobster pot stickers, salmon lomi lomi (brochette-like), and sushi. Those appetizers wet our appetites! The entrance was even more magnificent! Blackened salmon with scrambled eggs, lemon honey grilled tiger prawns, yummy snapper, and char-grilled NY steak and eggs. Brunch was delicious, and the fact that the staff was friendly while they tended to us made us feel welcome and comfortable. For desert my mom had the warm banana cake that we all shared with an espresso to wash it down. We couldn't help but thank the young and hip chef on the way out. His food was adventurous yet subtle, and it drove our pallets wild. Plus, it wasn't overpriced for the quality! We're definitely going back this year for mother's day brunch!”

“My husband and I decided to get away for the weekend for our anniversary. I love sushi, and had heard about RA many times, The food was so good, that atmosphere was calm and romantic. The waitress was great. The food came quick, and the drinks even quicker, I love this place and will not hesitate to go back! 1 word of advice this is not a place to bring the kiddos.”

“Lines are long at this famed pizza restaurant. I lived in Chicago, and the restaurant tries to pass off their pan pizza as Chicago deep dish. It is hardly deep dish and quite disappointing. the crust was thick and took up 60% of the pan layer. Nothing like the real deep dish in the windy city. We went on a Monday evening and were told the wait would be 30 minutes. It ended up being 1 hour and some who came later had a 1.5 hr wait which turned out to be 2 hrs. The hostess could order the pan pizza ahead for you, which we did. But when we were finally seated, the waitress told us she had only received the order 10 min before and the pan pizza takes 45 minutes to cook. After checking with the manager, they somehow managed to speed up the process and got us our pizza 30 minutes after we were seated. She also said the pizza would be on the house, since communication between hostess and wait staff was sorely lacking. Very disappointing evening. I have yet to experience anything quite like real deep dish outside of Chicago, and this place is no exception.”

“This aptly-named abomination is a chain, started in Minneapolis in a basement location that had previously housed a fine Italian restaurant.”

“The worst meal I have ever had. The biscuits were something they must have picked up at the grocery store and heated up in the micro. The garlic bread was just as bad. I have bought better garlic bread in the freezer section of the grocery store. It does not appear either was made in house. They should have been considering the price you pay for your meal. We had the petit filet and salmon. Both were of horrible quality. Nothing had any flavor. We did not finish our meal. Will never go here again. I have nothing good to say about my experience here. I cannot recommend one thing.”

“I discovered this place a year ago while on vacation and when I returned to Scottsdale this past week, I decided I wanted to return for the apricot glazed pork chops. The atmosphere is casual upscale dining with a rustic feel to the building. Excellent lighting throughout, dark enough to be intimate, yet adequately lit at table surfaces and no glare anywhere. Very inviting. While the food is delicious, and the service is comparable to that of a fine cruise ship dining room, I find it hard to believe that at $22.00 for pork chops and $32.00 for a steak, that dinner does not include salad, soup or bread! Also, water was never offered, but could be had if you asked. Mixed drinks were $7.00 to $9.00 and a beer could be purchased for $5.00.”

“A joke! Six of us had dinner last week and none of us thought it anything close to the big city guys, Daniel, Keller, Trotter, Mina, etc. My halibut was over cooked and served cold. The filet wasn't anything that couldn't be found in any other estab. In town. The scallops were overcooked and the Caesar Salad served with one of the main courses was not more than two small green leaves dressed. No one ordered a dessert for not one sounded appealing. Very, very disappointed. We would have paid more than the overpriced menu if the food warranted it, for the view is that special. If you want the view go to Elements. If you want the food try Roaring Fork, Wild fish or Christopher.”

“The food was so-so, nothing special, several menu items appeared pricey. Most deterring, though, was the musty smell that permeates the entryway. Wicker chairs were pretty, but a little low from the table. The fellow who filled our water glasses and took away dishes was very attentive, which was nice, but I doubt I'll go back there.”

“I was assaulted by a bartender/bouncer after bringing to his attention that my bill may have been wrong. He cursed and yelled at me, and then when I signed the tab and didn't leave a tip, he flipped out and attacked me. After writing a letter to the owner, he said too badly, you shouldn't have signed the tab. We don't owe you anything, even if my employee assaulted you. Well, had I known I was going to be assaulted, I wouldn't have signed anything. I would have called 911. I've spoken to several friends and co-workers since this incident about their experiences at Dos Gringos. One said that a bartender stole her credit card and acted as if she had returned it. Another friend said that months ago their tab was also wrong and the bartenders would refuse to correct the mistake. I guess it's not just me. This place really is awful. Nothing. Awful service, over priced.”

“The people who manage the restaurant are not interested in the customers. I have previously bought pizza from roasts on numerous occasions and have been happy with the product. However recently I have not been able to order takeout and the attitude when I called back has been horrendous. It is my fault an order was not correct and not the person taking the order. I verified with a person who was with me at the time of the order what I said and they agree with me. I have live in Scottsdale since 1981 and have ordered from roasts on numerous occasions but after my encounter on June 25, 2007 I will not do it again. In addition I will inform my friends and other individuals I have referred to this business over the years of my experience. What I found most disturbing was roast's web-site does not allow to contact the company to register your concerns.”

Mary Elaine's “Feels like you are sitting in a hotel lobby, everyone asking how is everything while you are eating, had the Kobe steak tasted like a good London broil not bad, but at least put more than 3 tiny carrots and 2 half-dollar size fried potatoes on the plate. I was there in season and it looked like a ghost town. ”

“Since my last review was cut off and I've visited 2 more times since then, I felt I could put down 1 more review. As stated before this place is special to me. It could use a fresh coat of paint on the outside and it could use some updates to the furniture, however the food is pretty good and the service and atmosphere is great. The lavosh has to be my favorite dish. It is made to order, but I do suggest the cajun lavosh. The margaritas are very good here also. I've tried other dishes and they are all good. Some are better than others, but I say go with your gut. Presentation of food needs some improvement. The service here is always top notch. Somehow I always have the same waitress and she's very good. Ok, so now about the experience. You have 2 options: eat downstairs which is open air, or upstairs which is completely open . The upstairs has a great view. There is also a nice bar on the top level, so you'll see people mingling there. On the main floor they have a nice little fountain and tucked away in the back is a little bar, which you can find people singing karaoke until close. For a quiet experience go early to midweek, but if you want a lively spot and want to see a great mix of people, then hit Grapevine Thursday through Saturday. If you want to experience old Scottsdale, eat some good food, have a great service, a great view, and an even better experience Grapevine is a must.”

“Wow I still am fantasizing about the lasagna. I cannot sleep at night!! I frequent Babb¿s, Felicia, and ad Silva no which is all great restaurants but this place is so much more. I felt like I was eating a lovingly prepared meal in someone's home in Italy. I mean mama actually makes the lasagna and papa is doing all the cooking!! This is really an authentic place. And the beauty of it is you can have things that are basic and some that are rather complex. I could eat here 5 days a week. I could not understand why there aren't lines down the block. And mama's canolas were spectacular, what I am saying. Even the tortellini soup was the best I ever had. I am stunned there is no saga review.”

“Went to AZ88 Saturday night for dinner. Never been here before - decor is sort of Herman Miller meets Tomorrow land. Despite a paltry selection of by-the-glass wines (maybe 5 red wines), we selected a few. Our waiter came back shortly with mini carafes of each wine. He poured some into each glass, and left the remainder on the table. I took a sniff from my glass -- corked! The place was a zoo, but luckily he was still within hailing distance, and I waived him over. "I'm sorry, but my wines corked," I said. "Are you sure," he asked giving my glass a sniff. "Yes, I'm sure," I replied (sans any attitude IMHO). He no more, but put the glass on his tray, picked up the individual carafe, and headed away from the table. He returned some minutes later and said nothing - but left the wine list again for me. Hmmm, I guess this meant they weren't opening a new bottle, but were instead moving right to step #3 - offer the patron something else. Looking over the list of maybe 6 uninteresting red wines by the glass - and imagining the possibility of coming up with another shot at 'corked,' I thought to heck with it, and ordered a Harp Lager. Admittedly the waiter was busy, and it soon became just as obvious this was more of a bar than a "wine place." But that said it would've been nice not to question me about the wine, and nicer if I'd been given some direction when he returned. On the plus side, they did have some great burgers.”

“I thought the place was fantastic. The TV's are the best big screens in town, an entire wall of screens, the food was tremendous and a great value. I had the focaccia sandwich. The service was very good and friendly and my girlfriend even loved the place, I am in heaven. A place to drink beer, watch sports and my girlfriend likes it too. I saw a lot of families eating and the bar crowd was up at the bar area, it seems to have something for everyone.”

“Unorthodox name, great Mexican food. If you like huge portions and come hungry, this is the only Mexican food stop you need to know. Not your standard out of the can Mexican food. The keywords here are fresh and lots of "cheese". They pile the stuff on like they make it in the back room. You will not be disappointed.”

“My husband and I have been to the Glazed Ham every time we vacation in Scottsdale. Everything is very fresh. The service people try to be accommodating. You go up and choose what you want from a menu. When done, they will bring it to your table. You serve yourself coffee or tea while waiting. In the early morning you can get homemade oatmeal which is my favorite. Their breads and pastry are delicious. Try it you won't walk away hungry. For lunch they make lovely salads. Their fresh cut up fruit always looks great.”

“If I had to use 1 word Superlative. I live in Chicago, noted for Italian eateries and frequently do business in NYC. I have dined in the finest restaurants in America. Tiramisu' in Scottsdale is the Best I have ever been to. The food is incomparable, and being personally taken care of by Serafino was a joy. Listen to his sage advise on wine and if you care for scintillating conversation he is a modern day DaVinci. What a joy.”

“Great food, huge portions, hard to find items like homemade banana bread, tea sandwiches, homemade chicken salad, etc. The ice cream is fantastic and comes in lots of flavors. The decor is black, white and pink, 50s style. The place has real history, ask when you visit. Last time I checked, there was a waitress there from 1968, she loved her first job so much, she was still there over 35 years later!”

“My wife and I have had a favorite mexican restaurant in San Diego for years. While visiting friends in Scottsdale, we tried Los Olivos. It offers, BY FAR, the best mexican food we've ever had (and that was the consensus of all 4 adults at the table) and the prices are very reasonable. The atmosphere is good - just feels a bit dark and cramped in one room but there are others to choose from. Service is friendly and attentive. We only regret that we live so far away... We've lived in NM for years so I believe we know authentic mexican...can't get it on the east coast anywhere we know. Move over San Diego, we've got a new favorite...”
