“Atmosphere is nice and cozy. Ideally designed for couples. Most tables are set as booths, enclosing the customer in a sense of solitude. The way the tables are designed, customers don't feel surrounded by other people noise/sound. While customers feel cocooned you can hear EVERYONE. When I was there, there were hardly any people but I could hear them all. I didn't just hear the table behind me but I also heard tables on the other side of the restaurant. Food was so so. Appetizer: Oyster Special - it was OK. Not memorable Entree, Venison with blueberry sauce - it was GOOD. Would order it again. Desert Chocolate Mousse - there wasn't a big selection, nor were the deserts memorable. When I read the menu and it mentioned pastry cart (along with the other deserts) I thought I would see something different. Instead, the pastry cart just had the deserts listed on the menu. I was also thrown off when I arrived at my table. I was handed 2 menus. I thought it was the drink/wine menu and the other was the food menu. Both menus were wine menus. The first one was for wine by the glass, beer, etc. and the other was a comprehensive wine list for by the bottle. After I ordered my drink, all menus were removed and I waited for my drink to arrive. It was some time after my drink arrived that the actual menu was handed to me. Also, as I was leaving the waiter approached me regarding my tip. He didn't think my tip was good enough and asked for more money. For the price I wouldn't go back. I've been to other restaurants in the area where the overall experience and price are better. I had read comments about this place before I went so I did plan ahead. 3 hours before my show started. It took 2.5 hours for everything and I was hungry 2 hours later.”

“Most amazing! For people who love real continental cuisine, I don't think there is anywhere else to go in Anchorage.”

“This place was a happy surprise as far as the food goes! Although it is located in a small strip type mall the interior is cozy and clean. The bartender was friendly, well dressed and made sure her customers are well taken care of! Wow - can't wait to go back!”

“I have frequented this bar for years, but will not again. The place must have switched managers or something - it is nothing like it once was. Food is now poor, arriving cold - and I suspect caused my gastro problems. The waitresses use to be a joy - now you never see them. Try to get a set of utensils & you would think you're asking for their phone number. I have heard about a lot of fights at this place any more. Not sure, perhaps a motorcycle gang has taken it over. Anyway - my recommendation is to stay away!”

“My husband and I have eaten at Turnagan house for years with excellent service and food, however, this past week we took the family for a gathering expecting wonderful food. The prices have gone up and the quality of the food has gone down. For the new higher prices the food just wasn't very good. We probably won't go back.”

“Nothing fancy in terms of the environment but the personable and genuine interaction with the owners was unique. The coffee drinks, especially the espresso drinks were fantastic. They had a limited but consistently good menu of light food items, lunch (soup, quiche, bagels and bakery). I would like it to the wonderful old coffee houses of the past where you can linger over your drink, meet friends and have a lively political discussion or if you just need a public place to be alone. I highly recommend it.”

“Went to AK Pizza Co in Wasilla on Friday 9/12, got 2 large Pepperoni carryout. At home, same day, saw an add-in and for a $2 rebate for the same order. Saved my receipt, went there on Friday 9/19 and asked about the add and discount, plus ordered again the same as previously. You have to ask for the special, I was told by the young girl. But the add doesn't say anything about asking and doesn't clearly show a cut-out coupon.”

“My friend and I had an above average meal, salmon and steak. The meat was top quality, the salmon average. The prices are very high, but as long as the quality keeps up it isn't so bad. The service was slow, not sure why. The carrot cake is wonderful, comped by the waitress due to the slow service. We plan to go again for dessert and maybe special occasions.”

“I ordered a pizza to be delivered. the delivery took very long, on top of it, the pizza I received was not the one I ordered. when I called, they said the cook was not in, and to "call back tomorrow" and they could re-make it then.”

“After living in Alaksa for over 10 years and hearing such wonderful things about this place, I decided to make it the pinnacle of the evening for my first wedding anniversary. I still wonder, did I end up in a paralell universe? I feel like I got hosed after reading everyone else's reviews. Nothing about this experience was good. It started with waiting to be seen and then escorted to the bar to wait. Once there we order very over priced drinks, but the cheapest on the menu. My husbands tasted like nothing, but did come with a cherry. My drink was o.k. but for the price, a fresh strawberry would have been nice, vs. a frozen one that resembled a blot clot in my drink, making it most unappealing. Next, we had the cajun mushroom, that touts it's spicey...not sure where the spice was. There was more deep fried batter than anything. Finally, after 1 hour and being bumped into by other patrons, our table was ready. But even though we only needed to walk only 15ft, we had to clear out tab of 18.00 for 2 drinks and 11.00 for mushrooms. Needless to say our table was right by the entrance where anyone else coming for a meal would have to loiter and as close to the mens room as you could get. We were greeted reasonably fast by our waitress. We both knew we wanted the "world famous pepper steak" so our order was easy, the only difference was the salad dressing. Salads arrived, nothing there except lettuce and dressing which they got wrong on my husbands. Dressing amount too much for amount of salad. She said a few times she'd be back with fresh pepper, but we ended up using the shaker from the table. The bread was cold and hard, we didn't eat it. It suposedly had cheese and jalapenos, but we didn't see any. Steak finally arrived. From the first bite we were repulsed. The steak was decent once you got past the fat, but gravy was putrid. Our potato had twice the amount of sour cream needed. We both love sour cream, but OMG! The atmosphere is horrible. Seems like most emphasis is on the wine cellar. There is a beatiful fire place that serves as a storage area rather then lend itself to some ambiance. We also got to listen to "poopie" stories most of our meal by a 8-9 yo boy. Nice. Maybe a "pricey" and promotedly upscale restaurant could cater a little more to the adults that frequent this playground called Girdwood and have a separate area for those with children much like bar is for adults. While some of this is the issue of the Double Musky and some is not, the fact remains on what should have been a romantic evening back at the B&B that we paid $200.00 for the night was wasted as we were both sick with horrible diahrea in the bathrooms. Try as I might I can not find one saving grace for this place. Oh, yeah..forgot the imported beers we ordered were awesome. In talking with some Girdwood locals were heard stories of the place having gone down hill in the last few years. A mention of "the son took over" was the promient reason for the decline. Skip it! Double Musky meal was $100.00 for two for two drinks, two beers and two steaks. I have had better steaks at Lone Star. I should also mention we have eaten all over the world, maybe some folks who haven't will continue to recommend this kibble, I for one can not. I truly would not have fed that steak to my dog. Avoid it. If you want to eat in Girdwood, you want quality food, serice and atmosphere, go to Seven Glacier Restaurant at Alyeska Resort. I recommend the Ahi, but that's another review.”

“On July 16, 2008 we ate at Phyllis' after hearing great reviews from another couple from our home state. The service was terrible. The menu stated your choice of potatoes with dinner, we ordered French fries not realizing or being told they were extra. We never saw our waitress again for the rest of the meal. The tip was already included on our bill. After seeking our waitress out and finding her sitting at a table reading the paper (to her benefit tip included). I guess customer service is not big to them they take their tip either way. Food was also not that great corn on cob was so soggy you could not eat it.”

“We had a couple appetizers: Stuffed mushrooms with seafood which came out cold and the chef had to reheat them. My stuffed clam which was bitten into was reheated and returned -- that was not appropriate. The pan fried razor clams were tough and overcooked. I ordered the l/2 rack of lamb it was not cooked -- so I refused to pay for it. We used to go there many years ago -- when the food was excellent -- but now the food was not up to our expectations like before. The waitress was great -- she tried hard to please us by taking off the lamb off the bill and bringing a free dessert. I would not recommend this place in the future.”

“We were pleasantly surprised by this hotel. They had several restaurants and offered room service (although we didn't use either). Also had other amenities (pool, tennis courts, and internet). The room was very clean and the front desk staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Our room attendant was also very helpful. The hotel is in a good, safe location. Close by to a supermarket if you want to buy snacks/water which is helpful when you're there multiple nights; however the only downside is there is no fridge so we couldn't keep our water cool.”

“This is a landmark restaurant in anchorage Alaska. They serve 50's type steak house food and it is the best of the era. The restaurant is showing its age but people still line up to get in the door. It's because it's the best steak and seafood in town.”

“There is the best and possibly the busiest, drive thru shop in anchorage. They use fresh roasted Kaladi brothers espresso and the baristas are well trained, friendly and fast. The shop is a darling little cabin with red trim. The also have soups, salads and sandwiches as well as the usual pastries. .”

“When we arrived it was busy so they seated us in a side room and we ordered drinks while we waited for a table. Then we had to pay for our drinks when our table was ready. I think we should have been able to carry our tab with us, since we were having dinner here. That had to have been the only thing I found negative about it. The steak was out of this world. If your ever visiting Alaska this is a must do!”

“We'd been to Gwennies before and had a decent breakfast, so we decided to try their dinner menu. Big mistake. We'll never go back to Gwennies again, and we don't recommend that anyone eat there. My husband and I both ordered the baked halibut dinner special. Before eating at Gwennies, I had no idea that an Alaskan restaurant wouldn't know how to cook halibut, but the cook at Gwennies that night didn't have a clue. We both were served a huge slab of halibut, but the fish was cold and mushy. It looked and tasted as if it had been reheated after being frozen, and it hadn't been completely reheated. How can an Alaskan restaurant serve cold, mushy halibut as a dinner special? We've had perfectly cooked, light and flaky halibut at numerous restaurants all over Alaska, so it was quite a shock that Gwennies was so bad. We spent $50 on that dinner.”

“This was a great introduction to anchorage having just arrived and exhausted from our trip, to enter this restaurant that was bustling with people energized us. The food was incredible if you are there the herb crusted halibut is incredible, complemented by a tasty amber ale. Scott our server made the experience even better with his attentive service, knowledge and sense of humor. This place is a must if you are ever in anchorage...”

“In town for a business trip and had a free evening. Took a nice walk around downtown and ended up with this. Since I was by myself, found an open seat at the bar and ordered a draft beer. I was told it was from their other restaurant. A very tasty Hefeweizen. Very friendly bartender, mention he had been in town for a number of years and was full of all kind of great tips. Started with a sliced tomato, fresh mozzarella and basil salad, very fresh tasting tomato slices and great flavor. I ended up ordering the Osso Bochco and found it to be outstanding, would order it again next time in town. Carrot cake for dessert and it was one of the best I ever had. Busy place, very nice service, all the staff seemed to be having a good time. Good Food.”

“Halibut isn't a fish I grew up eating, and I didn't care for it until I had it at Kodiak cafe. Whenever we're vacationing in anchorage, Kodiak cafe is one place I want to make sure I don't miss! It has a casual, homey feel, with friendly staff.”

“Having been a customer of Denny's nationwide for over 40 years and a customer at this location for over 20 years. I have had it. If I go here in the morning the service and food is what you would expect. But go anytime after 2 PM and you would think you were in another world. I have tried several times to get something late afternoon-early evening. If anyone even waits on you have to ask them to take your order, then when it finally comes it has turned cold from sitting so long waiting on the staff to finish their discussions about who is doing what with whom. They apply no attention to the customers, bring wrong food or ignore you all together. The manager must leave around 2 pm. This is not a single time but time and time again. After 20 years of 5-8 meals a week here I have had enough and will take my hunger elsewhere.”

“Coffees are actually a small soup, sandwich, coffee, and pastry spot. They have a limited breakfast menu but the food that I tried was excellent and very affordable. Their sandwich menu is great. I recommend choosing something from their "house specialties". I tried their ck tuna sandwich and it was amazing. I also tried the jamming' ham sandwich and it was excellent also. The place is small, only two tables and very busy. So it may be best to call ahead and place your order. Oh, by-the-way, they have the best coffee Iżve ever had...”

“If you like Gas Station fast food then this is for you. The "stand" is located in a gas station along with other off the shelf items such as chips and oil. The people are friendly enough but of course the food is take out only. I only had one meal which was lacking in spices and was cooked in a microwave. Service was typical fast food style with the addition of a "tip" cup on the counter. ”

“I was on a recent visit to Anchorage for a few nights and decided to check out the "top of the world restaurant". I first entered the restaurant and sat at the bar to have a drink. I ordered a nice bottle of wine from the bartender and had a glass before walking out onto the deck to have some dinner. So far, everything was fine. I had a seat in the corner overlooking the city and waited, and waited, finally I flagged down a bus boy and asked him for a menu and to send over the waiter. The buzzer said ok, I will get him. Evidently he got distracted by something and totally forgot about me. I looked around and there were maybe half a dozen tables, nothing too busy. Finally I flagged a waiter down dropping a check a couple of tables away, I asked him if he is my waiter. He exclaimed, " I don't know, Do you want me to be?" I found this a little strange and said sure. He then took his time and finally came back about five minutes later. I ordered a tenderloin steak and he brought me a new York strip and didn't even realize the difference between the two. His general knowledge, and professionalism was very low and I wasn't at all impressed with the quality of the food. The chowder was premade and the potatoes in it were still raw and I ordered a Med. Rare steak and it was almost well done. I refused the steak and finished my bottle of wine and left very unimpressed. If you are in Anchorage, I would suggest going to either "Club Paris", or Sullivan's Steakhouse if you want good food and good service. The Hilton should be ashamed. Steer clear of top of the world unless all you want is a drink. Even that took over ten minutes to get. Don't waste your time or money there. ”

“The owner/hostess was racially selective about sitting her clients. I, Korean descent, along with my party of four were bumped further and further down the list as I observed members arriving later obtained their seats before us. The restaurant does not take reservations as well which adds to the waiting. I did not confront the owner/hostess to prove my observation, needless-to-say I did not had to. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone!”

“Restaurant Downtown Deli is very nice just on first glance. But, the kitchen is so dirty. The cooks never wash their hands. Do not want to see this kitchen. The personal have to use just one restroom, which is very dirty too. "General manager" of this restaurant is arrogant and his behavior to employees is horrible. In Deli are the best pancakes, but another food is really not healthy and not fresh. I never saw restaurant like this before!”

“Hostesses and server were very friendly. Nice surroundings to include view of lake and a fireplace. Entrees (steaks) were horrible. Rib eye was full of gristle, fat, and overcooked. New York Strip little better but charred on the outside and overcooked inside. Both steaks were ordered medium. When I told this to the waitress she said that since the steak was so thick they had to cook it more. Nice try, but I don't think so. My mistake for not bringing this to her attention earlier, but still felt it was a poor excuse. On the positive side, my dog thought half of the rib eye was delicious. ”

“This restaurant is great I often have the lunch buffet (great value at $9.95) and dinner about once a month. The food is excellent, better than several Indian restaurants Ia''ve had in California. When I went in there early this week there were plenty of people (including Indians) maybe a tour came in, I dona''t know but a lot of Indians. Cost is reasonable for Anchorage. The staff is always friendly and helpful they answer all my silly questions. You can watch them make the naan in the clay pot. Love the Shahi Paneer.”
