Food:[9] • Service:[8] • Atmosphere:[7]

  • Food and wine.

“Wonderful Italian food. Great wood fired oven for authentic Italian pizza. A bit pricey but not a bad value. Nice wine list. Somewhat noisy when crowded because of metal ceiling that bounces the sound around.”

Blue Benn
Aug 23, 2008 by Susan from Middletown,Ny

Overall Rating: 3 User Rating Score: 3
Food:[7] • Service:[3] •

  • Large menu.
  • Freshness of dinner items.

“I was disappointed with dinner. Breakfast is ok. We were served cranberry sauce that had gone bad. Turkey dinner not up to par. Cole slaw that was homemade had a problem. The server was afraid to tell the boss. The reason I believe is because dinners are now slow with limited days. Breakfast is ok, but do not gamble on dinner.”

Blue Benn
Aug 22, 2008 by Susan from Middletown,NY

Overall Rating: 2 User Rating Score: 2

  • Large menu.
  • Freshness is a gamble.

“I was disappointed. Now that business is slow there is less turnover of food. I was served cranberry sauce with mold. The homemade Cole slaw looked good but tasted like bleach. Must have put it in a bucket that was not rinsed well. Turkey was dry and the dressing was a bread rock. We told the server and she was afraid to tell the boss. So we just figured we learned a lesson -- do not gamble on dinner at the Blue Benn.”

East Side Restaurant
Jul 20, 2008 by Mary from Northampton Ma

Overall Rating: 1 User Rating Score: 1
Food:[1] • Service:[3] • Atmosphere:[3]

  • Food is horrible.
  • Nice porch overlooking the water.

“Over the last 20 years, we have eaten at the Eastside through the various owners and chefs. Along time a go it uses to be good, but not any more. The food is disgusting, the restaurant is dirty and very unsanitary. The board of health in Newport needs to make surprise visits. The crackers brought to the table with cheese were stale and we think that they pass around the basket to more than one table instead of tossing out the left over crackers, I think they are putting a new cheese cup and putting it on the next guest's table. For starters, the ginger ale I ordered was flat and over priced $1.75. My husband ordered the fisherman's feast with the one crab leg, taste less bland seafood and the French fries on the dish looked like they were sitting for hours under a heat lamp and were greasy and burnt. I ordered the seafood dish in sherry cream sauce on the menu, it was horrible. The sauce tasted like crushed Ritz crackers, with cream, sherry and butter, my husband tasted it and said it was disgusting too. The seafood was old dried up over cooked shellfish, it came with two crostini, a regular item on the menu. The onion soup was lukewarm and flavorless. Now on to the salad bar, first of all salad bars should be banned, this is so dated and just a bacteria pit. The Eastside Salad Bar is dirty, nasty looking food and most of the dishes were half empty and looked like there we sitting there for weeks, I was afraid to eat from the salad bar, in the middle of summer 7/20/2008, the selection should be nice, but it consisted of old radishes, half a dish off colored beets that looked old, some dried up carrot shreds, nothing spectacular. There were several Mayonnaise laden salads that looked disgusting and the on I tried had some oily tasting tuna, I almost buffed it was so bad. The roll tray had one cinnamon sticky set of tongs that looked like they had not been washed in a week. There was not tong for the plain rolls so you either had to use the cinnamon tongs or your hands to pick of the roll. This was a $62.00 screwing. We ate at the restaurant twice this past summer and the last time it wasn't any better. Shame on the Dena Gray for screwing her customers with her lousy poor quality slop that she calls food, shame! Also here waitress over dirty looking too and should were uniforms. I was waiting for the hostess to ask me how the mean was but she didn't ask. Newport needs competition, if there were decent restaurants this one would close up or clean up.”

Shin-La Restaurant & Sushi Bar
Mar 28, 2008 by Jon from Stowe, VT

Overall Rating: 9 User Rating Score: 9
Food:[10] • Service:[7] • Atmosphere:[8]

  • Fantastic food! The owner is a very nice woman. They have good Japanese food, as well.
  • Some of the wait staff is quite lame. The atmosphere is a little boxy and cafeteria-like.

“I love the food! I always love to get the spicy squid dish with a side order of kimchi. The Japanese food they serve is good, as well. I love the tempura battered shrimp and the various noodle soups. The sushi was good. The only draw-back is that it really depends on just who is waiting on your table. If you're lucky, the owner will be your waitress. She is very charming. Some of the girls are. Somewhat uninspired. While the ambiance is not nearly Korean enough, the delicious food makes up for it. I'm starting to get really hungry just talking about them!”

Pizza Putt Inc
Nov 21, 2007 by Rob from St. Albans

Overall Rating: 6 User Rating Score: 6
Food:[5] • Service:[7] • Atmosphere:[6]

  • Arcade, mini golf, food, and fun all in the same place.
  • Food could be a bit better and too many kids being kids drives me up the wall.

“Pizza was great and I am picky not to be a pessimist but let's be real here, this is pizza putt, not much different from Pizza Hut, the pizza is cooked in a pan and tastes eggy, and it is very low end pizza. The appetizers consisted of frozen store bought French fries the big ones that you bake and are either burnt or soggy, the chicken strips and mozzarella sticks are also quick throw in the oven items that did not come out the greatest, they would be far better deep fried. If you want pizza go to juniors in Colchester or flatbread Downtown and you wont be disappointed. If you want a fun place to bring your kids and have a family dinner with average tasting food then pizza putt is your place.”

  • Hard to find.

“Even though the property and facility are both beautiful, the prices are very reasonable. Based on the appearance, the staff, and the quality of food I was expecting to spend a great deal more than we did. Multiple menus made ordering easy for my family and the scenery made the stop worthwhile all by itself.”

Overall Rating: 9 User Rating Score: 9
Food:[9] • Service:[9] • Atmosphere:[10]

  • I really liked the games, the atmosphere and how clean and nice they have made the place. I like laser tag too.
  • Maybe could use a little more park at times?

“Restaurant is very clean and the staff is very friendly. They are usually very busy with birthday groups, but that's expected. I take my kids there to play their hearts out, as I just use the time to unwind. It's like a big baby sitting clinic for me, ha. It's safe too, that's the main thing. Don't tell my kids but I love to play mini golf and their state of the art arcade games too. It's the greatest place in the North East to take kids to have fun. And love that Pizza! It's the best ever!”

Comfortable seating with an ambiance that is magical. The coffee is exceptional and the pastries are good. This is a place where you can linger all day long just watching people come and go. Church street is jammed packed with coffee houses but this one is special by far.”

Hunter's American Grill
Aug 25, 2007 by Brenda from Vernon

Overall Rating: 9 User Rating Score: 9
Food:[9] • Service:[9] • Atmosphere:[8]

  • The atmosphere was warm and relaxing. The food was scrumptious and cooked perfectly to our liking!
  • There were no signs pointing to the restaurant. If you are not a local, it would be hard to know that this steak house existed.

“We were celebrating our daughter going off to college and wanted to have a special family dinner. We were pleasantly surprised! The Hunter's American grill was just the type of restaurant we were looking for. It was clean and had a warm inviting atmosphere. It was decorated like a hunting lodge; the antler light fixtures were a quaint touch. The view of the surrounding mountains was breathtaking. There was a seating area on the outdoor patio which gave a wonderful view, and could be very private and romantic. They have a large lounge area for more casual dining, or the large dining room. There is a fireplace for the cold winter evenings. We had a wonderful selection. We enjoyed prime rib and other cuts of beef cooked to our liking. The dinners come with vegetable of the day, potato and salad bar. The salad bar offered many wonderful toppings such as dried cranberries, golden raisins, sunflower seeds, and croutons. There were assorted greens, marinated artichoke hearts, tender baby beets, tomatoes, cottage cheese, broccoli, carrots & cukes. The meal was hearty and delicious. We were all too full to have dessert, but the dessert tray looked very inviting. The service was great and although it was expensive, it was well worth it. We all had a delightful time and plan to go again.”

Sweet Tomatoes Trattoria
Aug 12, 2007 by Paul from Plattsburgh, NY

Overall Rating: 7 User Rating Score: 7
Food:[3] • Service:[4] • Atmosphere:[8]

  • My wifes' salad was very good.
  • My salad was a disaster.

“My wife and are retired and travel to Burlington about once a week for shopping and lunch. About once a month, for years, we have had lunch at Sweet Tomatoes. Satisfactory. I ordered the En tree Caesar Salad with Anchovies and other ingredients. The salad arrived with only lettuce, weak dressing, dried out tasteless chicken and nothing else. I finally got the waitress attention and she brought 3 anchovies. The waitress never returned to check on our lunch. The chicken was too tasteless to eat. When the bill arrived I asked the waitress to advise the food prep ingredients were missing from the salad, the dressing was tasteless and chicken inedible. I didn't see anyone who appeared to be a Manager to report my disappointment.”

Souza's Brazilian Restaurant
Jul 8, 2007 by John from Milton, VT

Overall Rating: 8 User Rating Score: 8
Food:[8] • Service:[7] • Atmosphere:[9]

  • Atmosphere, unique and memorable experience, very good food.
  • Small place, understaffed (the night we went).

“Souza's is definitely a different dining experience. It is little small but the decor is colorful, and its size adds to its energy. The ambiance I would describe as "active" and busy. While my wife and had gone there to celebrate our wedding anniversary, I would not describe it as romantic. However, it certainly is memorable and not only do I not regret going, i would recommend it for someone wanting to try something unique. Children are welcome, but I would not really describe it as family-friendly because the atmosphere is a little mature and the space too tight; if your kids are brats, doesn't go here. It certainly isn't cheap but while it is pricey you will eat well and the concept is worth paying for. The food was overall good to very good; there were a couple of stand-out items like the opening of bean soup, the roast lamb, and the grilled pineapple, but the sirloin tips were really tough and the fillet mignon a tad overdone. They service was average; although the staff were knowledgeable and friendly they seemed to be stretched a little thin; I think they would have done better if they were not understaffed. I recommend reservations, although they didn't give me the kind of table I had asked for when I called; instead of giving me something on the side we ended up in the center where the traffic was. By the way, the place was absolutely freezing. Overall if you go with a desire for an interesting evening and good food, you will enjoy yourself.”

Overall Rating: 5 User Rating Score: 5
Food:[8] • Service:[1] • Atmosphere:[4]

  • Food.
  • Service, service, service.

“The food was good; the only disappointment was a hard baked potato. The service was awful from the moment we walked in the door until we left. The host was busy taking care of a personal phone call when we walked in and then told us we'd have to wait a minute for our table to be ready, when he decided to wrap up that call (roughly two minutes later) he then sidled around the corner and put our table together. I would suggest dining there well before eight o'clock and don't think of bringing kids. Maybe your experience could be better. Like I said, the food was good.”

My steak was so tender. I had a New York strip with crushed peppercorns and a brown sauce on it. To die for! I cannot wait to be sent up to Keene NH for work again. I will make the trip to over to Brattleboro, VT anytime for a steak like that.”

  • Very plain location, high price.

“We went to Pangaea on out honeymoon and had one the finest meals of our lives. The menu was eclectic and the presentation was beautiful. The service was exemplary, no uncalled visits by staff but a meaningful look at the service area brought immediate attention. The food was among the top few fine restaurants I have visited on both coasts. The price was very expensive (of course we had a bottle of fine champagne) but well worth it for a high art culinary experience.”

Overall Rating: 9 User Rating Score: 9
Food:[9] • Service:[7] • Atmosphere:[10]

  • The food, coffee, view from the window and the decor.
  • The wait for service was a little long from start to finish but it was very busy.

“The setting couldn't be more indicative of a small New England town main street. The restaurant fills us quickly in the morning, especially during the peak autumn foliage weekends. Regardless, the wait's pretty short and they will actually come downstairs to the coffee shop or outside to tell you your table's ready. The food's outstanding as they use many local products, including organic and dairy/meat from their own farm! The coffee was hot and I believe locally roasted. The decor and wait staff are picture postcard New England and both provided a comfortable atmosphere. The only knock we had was that we had a hard time getting our order taken after being seated and with service during the meal, such as a coffee cup refill. ”

Five Spice Cafe Inc
Oct 23, 2006 by Vern from Indiana

Overall Rating: 9 User Rating Score: 9
Food:[10] • Service:[7] • Atmosphere:[8]

  • The food is fabulous!
  • Small dining room, and overly talkative owner.

“Five Spice Cafe is exceptional. The food is great, and there is a great variety for vegetarians to choose from. Though many of the items on the menu are common (chicken vindaloo, and other Eastern fare), the taste is decidedly not common. We loved the food so much, we went back, and it was just as good the second time around. The one big negative about the place is that the owner is a bit over zealous and it was a bit tedious trying to be polite to him, while at the some time trying to carry on a conversation amongst ourselves. He's quite gregarious and justifiably proud of his restaurant. If you're traveling solo, or enjoy meeting local characters, this is an excellent choice.”

Als French Fries

Overall Rating: 8 User Rating Score: 8
Food:[7] • Service:[10] • Atmosphere:[10]

  • Cheap, fast and fun.
  • None.

“Cheap diner food at its best. Al's French Fries is an old fashioned diner where you can eat all of your fried-food favorites like corn dogs, sausages, hamburgers, onion rings, fried cheese and, of course, French fries. It's almost like a trip to the summer fair!”

Souza's Brazilian Restaurant
Oct 23, 2006 by Don from Indiana

Overall Rating: 10 User Rating Score: 10
Food:[10] • Service:[10] • Atmosphere:[8]

  • The food was fabulous and the dining experience was exceptional!
  • The only negative is that the restaurant is small, and doesn't have a lot of beautiful furnishings.

“I found Souza's to be surprisingly good! If you go, be sure to go hungry. One price covers all of your non-alcoholic beverages (including choice of guava, mango or cashew juices!), appetizers, entrees and desserts. Just as you finish one food, your waiter arrives with something new to try. When it's all done, you are invited to have seconds of anything you've enjoyed. Souza's is not just food, it is an experience. The grandchildren were excited to try so many new tastes. I didn't count, but I would guess that we had more than 20 foods to try. Most arrived brandished on skewers. It was fun for my grandchildren (ages 8 & 9), my daughter and son-in-law, as well as me and my wife. The conversation flowed and everyone was eager to defend their favorite food as "the best one so far". ”

  • GREAT FOOD!!!!!!
  • Slow seating .

“I spent 12 days in Burlington on business. We ate at a different restaurant every night. The Daily Planet had the most delicious food in town. I never would have guessed it by the exterior. I still can taste my dish, and its been 3 months!!”

Hatchery Resturant The
Aug 14, 2006 by Amanda from New Haven CT

Overall Rating: 9 User Rating Score: 9
Food:[10] • Service:[8] • Atmosphere:[9]

  • interesting flavor selections-great bloody many.
  • Service could have been faster.

“The hatchery is a great place in Ludlow . Went there for breakfast with friends while visiting the town. The breakfast menu has your basic breakfast selections but also includes many different selections such as salmon hash and a cilantro pesto omelet that had Swiss and avocado in it. Flavors were wonderful. Small place so you may have to wait in line and my waitress seemed a bit overwhelmed (there was a help wanted sign in the window to be fair) but we were in no rush and the food was great so we enjoyed our experience. I recommend it to anyone that has the time to enjoy a great breakfast (Bloody Mary's and mimosas were great as well).”
