“Not long ago we had dinner at this restaurant and were greatly impressed. I had the flank steak and thought it was so good I had to bring my new in-laws back for a meal. The second trip, however, dinner, both in terms of service and the food, was an incredible disappointment. We came in shortly after five PM and were seated quickly enough. We had the egg plant and some soup as an appetizer while the soup was quite good, the egg plant, which I had before and was expecting to be crispy and golden brown like last time, was soggy and limp as if it had been fried in oil that was not hot enough. We all four of us ordered the flank steak which I had thoroughly enjoyed the last time, but after an incredibly long wait during which we had to ask for bread to be brought as none was forthcoming, someone from the kitchen staff brought out two orders of rib eye. We said no, we had all ordered the flank steak, medium. The young man took it back without the slightest semblance of an apology. I got the impression he thought it was our fault a mistake had been made. After a while, the waitress came back and said, 'oh I thought you had ordered the rib eye'. We said 'no, we had all ordered the flank steak. medium'. I think we were very polite about it, but I could not help but think it was not a difficult order to remember. It was not busy and I could not understand why the order was confused or things had taken so long. She disappeared, again without an apology. After another very long wait, during which we were not offered anything else or even more bread, four orders of the flank steak came out. On two of them, the meat was at best lukewarm, I can only assume because they must have been sitting while two orders were done to replace the two rib eyes. There seemed to be less meat on each order than had been on it the last time I ordered it, it did not seem to be very well marinated, the flavor was minimal, and the steak itself was tougher than the previous time I had ordered it. However, being really hungry at this point and not wanting to make a fuss in front of the new in-laws, we all ate the meal. The waitress did ask if the steak was prepared properly, I assume in terms of whether or not it was in fact medium but I didn't reply. Under the circumstances, I wasn't about to send it back and have to wait another 45 minutes for some replacement. With the slow inattentive service, no apology for the mix-up on the orders or the delays, soggy eggplant strips, and cold tough tasteless steak, I can assure you we won't be returning.”

“My kids and I love ice cream during the summer months. Going to friendly was something I thought was a great idea. The kids and I can get both ice cream and dinner. Service is slow, food comes out slow and cold, ice cream is melted. Oh well two trips it is for dinner and ice cream somewhere else.”

“On return visit, sirloin was inedible, companion's prime rib overcooked, management was condescending and not willing to make up for a meal that could not be eaten without fear of choking. Owner/Cook claimed because he could cut through the steak, that there was nothing wrong with it. Never offered another choice; refused to take anything off our bill. This customer will never return to this establishment.”

“It's hard to know where to begin. Quite simply, this was the worst dining experience I have ever had. When we called for reservations, we were told that they had high chairs--but, upon our arrival they had none. Our waitress literally quit half way through the meal, leaving just ONE server for the entire restaurant. The calamari appetizer tasted like boiled noodles with a hint of fish. Our entrees were actually inedible. Not to mention, I never received my pasta that was supposed to accompany the meal. The hidden garlic bread charge was the icing on the cake. The prices were quite high, making this experience highway robbery. By the way, they don't accept credit cards--although this is not posted anywhere.”

“Great little shop with a super selection! Hope that you hit it on a day they are serving their BBQ specials. Either the pulled pork or beef brisket are THE BEST. Nice couple that run this train themed shop, railroad memorabilia, funky names for the sandwiches. Try a Casey Jones (ham, Swiss, turkey, lettuce and tomato) or a Train Wreck (meatball sausage combo). You won't regret a trip to SJ, prices are reasonable, the food is high quality and the atmosphere is super!”

“The food is delicious and the service is exceptional! Want a good laugh, have a drink at the upstairs bar, the bartenders are a hoot. However, there is absolutely no atmosphere! No music and it is very dark and dreary! If it weren't for the food and staff, I would not return.”

“I was recently very disappointed with the China Inn restaurant. It use to be the best Chinese restaurant in R.I. I will never go again. The last visit left my husband and myself so unsatisfied. The crab Rangoon were burnt on the outside and partially frozen on the inside. The service was horrible! We asked for hot mustard and never got any. We never received our cocktails that we ordered. It was our anniversary and I was so looking forward to a wonderful meal. It didn't happen.”

“We were a bit late for our reservation, but our large group was seated right when we got there. The waitress was amazing and so polite; she almost immediately came to get our drink orders and was sure to let us know she was bringing water too. She clearly told us the specials and their prices, and once we had ordered she immediately brought us a basket of bread. As soon as we'd get through one, she'd bring over another one within seconds. The only thing was- the bread was a bit hard on the outside- too hard for me to bite into so I suspected it was a bit stale. She brought us a pitcher of water without us even asking! Our food came at perfect timing and mine was delicious! Then she brought a dessert plate for the birthday girl and it also was delicious! Overall, a reasonable price for a high quality experience.”

“Don't go here. it s. Worst Chinese ever. Rice was dry and tasted like mildew. Crab Rangoon's were disgusting. The only refuge I have is to hopefully warn some other person out there about the terrible food they serve. I can't even believe they have the audacity to call it food. How it could ever be judged a 4 star dining experience is beyond me. Do yourself a favor and head to The Asia Grille near the Lincoln Mall. I would have went there but it's New Years Eve and they stopped taking orders at 5pm.”

“The food and service were good until the waitress accused us of stealing money from another party's bill. We were hassled and even threatened for about a half hour by the waitress and another employee who worked in the back. The owner eventually came over and told us not to worry about it. Cheers would benefit from a more mature wait staff. I definitely would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Although the food was good, there are plenty of places in the area that you could visit and not get hassled.”

“After months of anxiously awaiting the opening of the new Down city, I was very disappointed. The place was beautiful, - but the portions were not the same, and the prices were crazy. $9 for a very small glass of wine is an example. There service was ok,- but not great- and the owner acted like the customers were there for her instead of the other way around. I will not be going back”

“They were busy but we got our table in like 2 minutes. It was a Friday night at that. We tried the boneless wing and potato skin sampler and both were great. For the entrees, my husband got some burger which he liked. It was stacked high with fresh toppings. I ordered the fish n chips. I have to admit, the fish was quite possibly the best I have ever had. The breading was not too thick and was seasoned perfectly. Amazing! The only complaint we had was that due to them being busy we had to wait a while for our check and it to be processed. Great find!”

“I've been going to Salas (upstairs) since the 1970's. It is a wonderful family friendly restaurant. The prices are great when you're on a budget (which was the case when my family was stationed in Newport). Their oriental spaghetti is the best, as well as the lobster and clambakes. There are many wonderful, romantic restaurants in Newport; however, we always find our way back to Salas every year and are never disappointed.”

• Service was lackluster.

“Pinelli's deli, quite a treat! I ordered the veal parmesan, I always order this dish. I like to compare with other restaurants the quality of the veal, portions, etc. I started with the chicken soup special, very good with equal portions of chicken, veggies, etc. To stock. Then came my veal pram, yum! I had enough to eat and had leftovers for 2 days. You BYOB so feel free to bring your favorite beverage to compliment your dining. We brought along a chicama vineyards summer red which complimented both my dish as well as my wife's seafood pasta plate. Service could have been better since we ordered dessert but were not offered coffee to go along with it but oh well. 7 out of 10 forks!”

• Over-priced special menu for Waterfire.

“Went to 3 Steeple Street on a Waterfire night because it was reviewed as having a varied menu from sandwiches to fancy meals. Made reservations, but was never told that on Waterfire nights, they have a very limited menu that is much pricier on average than their usual menu. That is understandable; a chance to profit from a big event but if a restaurant wants to go high end for a night, the restaurant should strive to produce high-end results. 3 Steeple Street did not. Much of the food was mediocre, lukewarm, uninspired seafood chowder, bland salmon dish with too little of the compote meant to give it flavor to go around. The portions were generous, but just nothing special. The server we had was also just average, though another server who was tending to a large party nearby seemed great. This may be a good restaurant for a basic night out, but I can't recommend for Waterfire.”

“Three out of the six people from my dinner party became sick off the lobster ravioli. When I called the general manager to give him a heads up he became defensive and questioned my integrity. I will never give this restaurant my business again. On top of making me sick we waited 45 minutes with a reservation and waited another 30 minutes before a waitress came over to our table to take our drink order!”

“Awful! Incredibly rude wait staff put me off entirely. I did not eat there, so cannot make a claim for the food -- I just wanted a tea, but it was apparently a huge inconvenience for the wait staff. “The food was over salted and the waitress was just plain rude, every time we said thank you should ignore it as if we had said nothing, instead of offering the standard, "you're welcome". She never asked if I wanted a refill on my drink, my husband had to flag her down in order to get a refill on his, and she practically abandoned the area we were sitting while my husband waited to be asked which desert he was going to have. (This was the full course dinner deal, so his desert was included). The attitude of this waitress and her neglect totally destroyed my experience. It is strange that this happened because a friend of mine had told me that spumonis had good food, but bad service, and I thought perhaps her experience was an isolated incident, unfortunately it was not isolated. I guess the management at spumonis take for granted that lots of people show up to eat there, so they don't think they have to regulate the attitudes of their wait staff. Threes just no excuse for what happened...”

“The food at young china is the best Chinese food in the area. They have good duck sauce which is hard to find around here and if you are hungry don't fret because the service is good and the food is delivered perfectly and timely. I recommend this restaurant highly to anyone who loves Chinese food.”

“The clam sauce is the best I've had anywhere! The Zuppa is especially delicious! Also the lasagna was so good that we now buy it by the full pan for every family function! The kids meal was great too - my son got a drink and an ice cream free with his meal. We'll defiantly go back for more.”

• The restaurant has poor acoustics so it can be difficult to talk from one end of the table to the other.

“Ok. is a Teppanyaki style Japanese steak house where the chef prepares your meal on a grill in the center of the table while you watch. As a previous reviewer stated, the chef is an entertainer as well, but the flair of the performance depends upon which chef you get. The food is fabulous; there is a sushi bar with a large selection as well as the typical Teppanyaki fare. All tables are tables of 8, so if your party is small, you may end up sitting with another party -- this is standard for this type of dining and not unique to Ok. This restaurant is a family favorite.”

• Their New England clam chowder was "run of the mill" And, why no clear broth RI chowder on the menu?

“I had a business luncheon at Hemenway's recently and everything was fabulous! Great service, excellent food - especially the roasted scallop salad and warm crusty rolls. Nice view of the river, too. I will return for dinner one of these days.”

• Wide variety of possible grills, self-selected. Returns possible.
• noisy, not especially friendly, cold atmosphere. Bring your own fun.

“Though I found the restaurant loud and not very appealing in decor, the grill and salad bar were well worth the price we paid ( about $15 per person). Basically there is a wide assortment of grill able items from veggies, through meats, to seafood. It's pretty much self-serve, but staff does grill the food on an enormous grill. Warning: drinks and desserts are NOT a bargain.”

I also get the Atipasto (salad with cheese and cold cuts) which is worth trying. It gets hot in this restaurant in the summer time, so your better off taking the food to go on a hot day or come in on off-summer time.”

“We dined there on 7/2/05, signs posted "under new management"- obviously not a good thing because the experiences with old management were much better. Waited at the "hostess station" to be acknowledged for several minutes. Drink service slow, 1 diner in our party did not receive his beverage. One of the entrees did not come out with the others and was slow to arrive after. Once it came out it was missing the salad dressing and had to wait another 7 minutes for dressing, by this time everyone else was almost finished with their entrees. Food was not as good as 1 year ago. Also, the party next to us was requesting to speak to a mgr. We never arrived at their table. Overall not a good experience!”

• The long wait. no reservations taken.

“We have had our special celebrations at Spain of Cranston and have never had a disappointing meal there. The service is top of the line, and of course the wait is long on the week-ends that we choose to go. It is well worth the wait if you are looking for romance with the Mediterranean flare added!”

• Atmosphere wasn't the best, it's like a fast food joint.
