The Green Gables
Oct 18, 2009 by Millie Jenkins from Honolulu, Hi

Overall Rating: 9 User Rating Score: 9
Food:[9] • Service:[9] • Atmosphere:[9]

  • Food, prices, service.
  • It was all good to me.

“A blast from the past. Well worth the 5 minute drive off the Interstate highway (81) The food, service and atmosphere was good. This place reminds me of places I used to go as a child with my parents. It is very well preserved and quaint. I hope they restore it and never make it modern. It is like a museum. I loved it. The Italian food was the best I'd had since Philadelphia. Go there and see for yourself. If you want gourmet food in an upscale atmosphere, don't bother with this place, go on to New York City.”

“Good food and even better price. Only problem my wife and I had was on a recent Sunday morning. Our waitress was too busy sitting down with her obvious regular customers to take their order instead of mine, yet I was seated before them. She continued to talk to them about her family problems until I asked for some coffee. The food was served very quickly but we never received a 2nd cup of coffee because she was outside at the main entrance smoking. We will return but we don't want her again. Ask for another server if you get the older one.”

Wellsboro Diner
Oct 14, 2009 by Dale from Quakertown

Overall Rating: 6 User Rating Score: 6
Food:[7] • Service:[6] • Atmosphere:[7]

  • Dining, rail road, car, and atmosphere.
  • High prices.

“During a recent trip to visit Pitt-Brad College, we came upon this restaurant which we remembered viewing on the Food Network. We thought this would be a great dining experience and stopped with our 2 teenagers. The dining car looked great as we entered but then saw signs of wear that seemed repairs hadn't been completed since 1960. A first glance at the menu seemed to be a bit high. Okay, so we placed our order. Upon receiving our food, we found out that there are no extras with the meals like Diner Rolls or Veggies with our meal or even a simple side of Potato Chips with a Burger. Needed to order additional food after we were already served which didn't work out well as others in our party were finishing at different times. Food was homemade and was good but not very plentiful for the price.”

Carsonville Hotel Inc
Oct 12, 2009 by Xeena from Shamokin

Overall Rating: 6 User Rating Score: 6
Food:[6] • Service:[4] • Atmosphere:[5]

  • Multi-room areas to choose sitting in, the patio bar. Friendly service, biker friendly, and rural setting.
  • Slow food service.

“Nice unique setting in the rural of Pennsylvania. Beautiful ride on motorcycles or car. One could assume it was a popular stop once upon a time evident by the multiple additions to the original building. Laid back atmosphere for smoker and non-smokers. Family owned and run. Love the menus printed on brown paper bags. Plan an average $25 bill/per person for food and alcohol drink. Nicely prepared but nothing special.”

Oct 3, 2009 by Andrea from Evans City

Overall Rating: 2 User Rating Score: 2
Food:[5] • Service:[6] • Atmosphere:[4]

  • Nice looking.

“Nice bar overall. Decent beer draft prices, kind of surprise that they stopped selling drafts at 9pm (mostly because bottles cost more) extremely surprised that in the middle of my wing dinner a man approached me and told me that there was a band playing and if I would like to stay. I needed to pay an additional $7 (in addition to at this point it was after 9 pm and beer prices had already climbed). Overall, a nice looking place just out to try to make a lot of money. I'll spend my money elsewhere.”

Oct 2, 2009 by Kathy from Pittsburgh

Overall Rating: 3 User Rating Score: 3
Food:[3] • Service:[1] • Atmosphere:[1]

  • Not a thing!
  • Food, atmosphere and service.

“This was my first visit in several years and will be my last. The food was mediocre at best and the service was terrible. The waitress was rude and appeared to preferred to be anywhere, but there. She never asked us if we wanted anything after taking our initial order. She treated two elderly women at the booth next to ours like they were dirt. There appeared to be a problem with their food and she just stood at their table and yelled at them to the point of having the one woman (probably 90 years of age) in tears. It was the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I have never seen anyone treated this poorly in public, much less two soft-spoken 85+ year old ladies. It literally turned my stomach and to top it off, this waitress then placed around the dining room laughing and telling the folks at another booth (there were only 3 booths filled in the entire place and I can see why) how she was not about to give these old people any break on their bill because of their complaint about their food. NICE!”

The family is so friendly and always does their best to make us feel at home. The food is awesome and a great value. We eat here all the time because we are a very health-conscious family and they use only the best ingredients and have healthy options.”

Food:[1] • Atmosphere:[3]

  • Great wings.
  • Awful service.

“Great food. Never had something I didn't like. Service is pathetic. Several times they have forgotten what we had ordered. There have been times when the waitresses have walked by as if you didn't exist. We have a running joke about how poor the service is. The waiter seems to be on Mars and couldn't be more clueless. The food is ridiculously good though. We only order out now and find that the food is just as good and the service is much better. Another drawback is that the place is cash only.”

If you like artsy (like Ithaca) you'll like this. The food was delicious, fresh, upscale, and a little different menu. They were very accommodating about the way the 3 of us ladies ordered - lots of appetizers and sharing an entree. I would have liked to linger longer. I will be visiting again.”

Country Tavern & Restaurant

Overall Rating: 6 User Rating Score: 6
Food:[6] • Service:[5] • Atmosphere:[2]

  • The location of the restaurant.
  • Cost, seafood buffet size and selection limitations, and seating a family in the bar.

“We called in a reservation for six. They put us in the bar with our four children. The waiter was also the bartender. The seafood buffet was OK considering we have been to much larger with more selection. The food tasted OK again, however, the salmon was not good. Our main complaint was the cost $18.95 even for children over 5. There is no way our children ate $18.00 worth of food. It was a nice ride there, however, we will not return.”

“The Alpine Inn is a hidden gem. This is the kind of place you go at the last minute on a week night when you want great food in a laid back atmosphere. The food is great, the prices are very reasonable and the portions are huge. Try the wings. The chef makes some great and interesting flavors; my husband's favorite right now is the Santa Fe hot wings (nice and creamy with a real kick). Some other favorites are the veal parmesan, the broiled seafood, and the steak for two. It's all good, and the new owners are really nice.”

“As a Bally native I know stories that came from The Bally Hotel, but since the new owners have taken it into a new direction, the hotel has blossomed into a culinary garden. I have never had an unpleasant experience at the Bally Hotel. With that my husband and I decided to have our reception there on July 18, 2009. Nearly one month later all our guests are still talking about the wonderful food, impeccable service and beautiful atmosphere. Some of my brothers and sisters; who know of the hotels past reputations, are still commenting on how beautiful it is on the inside, and what a wonderful job the family has done on rebuilding the class it rightfully deserves. I highly recommend a meal there any time of day. If you have an important event coming up make sure to book with them, they are great to deal with and can work with any budget.”

Overall Rating: 5 User Rating Score: 5
Food:[3] • Service:[9] • Atmosphere:[7]

  • Prices are good.
  • Food was not good.

“What a disappointment! We went to special restaurant, Turkey dinner. Turkey was Ok. Not sure if it was roasted today or not. Mashed potatoes were instant and tasted watery. Dressing- was almost tasteless except for being too salty. Gravy definitely was not homemade-almost looked gelatinous. Green bean and cr. of mushroom casserole had a funny taste. I don't think it was a spice or anything-maybe the quality of ingredients used. Rolls were warm and good. Coconut cream pie was not what I hoped for. Cream filling didn't not have much taste. Certainly didn't have much coconut in it. Peanut butter choc cream pie was good. Salad bar wasn't much. Had head lettuce that looked a bit under the weather and the usual vegetables. - cukes, tomatoes, carrots, onions, cauliflower and broccoli. Homemade chicken noodle soup was ok. Prices were good but food wasn't.”

Dean's Diner

Overall Rating: 2 User Rating Score: 2
Food:[2] • Service:[4] • Atmosphere:[3]

  • Location - if you like construction and jiggle joints.
  • Hideous desserts.

“Their road sign proudly displays an endorsement from KDKA TV. I hope the reporter and his crew ate somewhere else. We love diners and seek them out all over the country. Dean's was name I remembered from my past and we decided to stop. Seeing a full parking lot around noon was a good sign. As soon as we walked in I knew we should leave. We got a funny look from the elderly crew as being out of towners - but we are used to that. Scanning the room to get a good look at the food on the plates, I didn't see anything that looked appealing. It is almost worth a visit to see the last restaurant on earth where the servers wear white nurse uniforms. The server attentively stalked our table but when the food is boring and skimpy we had a tough time being enthusiastic. We held out hope that the vast pie menu would be a hit. No diner can produce that many different homemade pies in a day and Dean's doesn't either. Commercial pie shells filled with Canned Pie Glop covered in whipped topping is not pie. In short, Dean's has name recognition and location. If they only had food.”

Locanda Cavallo

Overall Rating: 1 User Rating Score: 1
Food:[3] • Service:[1] • Atmosphere:[5]

  • Location was beautiful
  • Service, portion size and selection was not good.

“I went to a wedding here. I think the place got a lot of money out of the bride and groom and gave them little food and horrible service in return. They do not have the staff to accommodate large functions and so the result is cooking less food at a snails pace. The guests spent the bulk of the night waiting for food instead of dancing. Half the wedding waiting nearly two hours in their chairs for the first course while the other half ate. Again, the unlucky half was not served dinner until 11:30-a half an hour past when the time the wedding was supposed to be over. No one was offered coffee because they did not have any coffee or tea service. No air conditioning. Guests left hot and tired and disappointed.”
