• Food is served hot.
• Can be noisy as it is an open room.

“I have stopped here a few times but have not lately. For one thing their prices have gone up considerably for the portion sizes. The salad bar is a very nice addition but is fairly small, only taking up half the bar. Not a lot of selection - a couple of salads to choose from. Veggies and dressings mainly. Not a bad place to stop at for a quick lunch though.”

• None that I can think of.

“I live close to this restaurant so I get to go here pretty often. Me and my girlfriend have been searching for a Chinese place that compared to this. The rest are OK but they just don't taste as good as this place does. I think it's a pretty good value for your money, costs more for dinner than it does for lunch though. Which is pretty normal for these type of restaurants.”

• Great food, atmosphere, and quality. Good place for couples or families.
• It's not cheap.

“I've been eating at this restaurant for years, and have always been impressed by the fantastic food, service, and atmosphere. I enjoyed it as a kid with the whole family, with a date in my teens, and now with my husband and friends as an adult. The music and dimmed lighting make for a relaxing and potentially romantic atmosphere, the employees are friendly and kind, and the food's great! The prices might seem a little high, but for the quantity and quality that you get, it's worth it! Go, and enjoy! (One more thing: The Crab Rangoon are AMAZING, and I LOVE the egg drop soup. These are standard Chinese restaurant fare, but much better than anything I've tasted at any other restaurant.”

“I've still been going to the Canteen after moving from Ottumwa in 1960. I've made many trips from my 2nd home town, Chicago. It's still the best. I was there last month and should have bought a bag full to go. Next time!”

• It's not the fanciest place I've ever eaten in.

“We stopped at Nick's on Aug 22, 2009. We started with the homemade onion rings. There were enough in one large order for all 4 of us adults. The best I've had in years. Moved on to tenderloins. One had a nice side salad, 2 of us had fries. We got enough fries to share. My wife ordered the homemade vegetable, beef soup and a huge milk shake. I had to finish the shake. Our bill was less than $30 with tax. That's good eating at reasonable prices. The little gal that waited on us was friendly and efficient. Did I mention cute. Thanks' Nick's restaurant for more than just a good meal, we had a good time as well. We'll be back for some of that homemade pie next time.”

“This is a small-town at its best! A very friendly tavern with a good menu and great service. When the owner found out, it had been 25 years since I had visited, he came to me and shook my hand and welcomed us. The bartender, even though very busy, took the time to talk with us as well. We were impressed, and had a very good time and good food. My wife and I will go back and soon! See you there!”

• Great service and outstanding food!
• Noise level is loud.

“Wow! The Red Crow Grille was outstanding! My husband and I were in the area to play golf and were trying to find a great place to dine via the internet. What a surprise it was to find such a wonderful restaurant. Our waiter was friendly and very helpful. He was able to answer all our questions and make good recommendations. The food was out of this world. The presentation of each course was beautiful and every dish was so delicious. The only negative was the level of noise, but it is a sign of the place to eat. If we are ever in the area again, we will certainly dine there.”

“The service was extremely slow. When we did get our food it was way overcooked and was horrible. This is not the first time this has happened here, but it will be the last time I go there. I try and go a few times just to give a place a chance. But when it happens again and again, I know it isn't getting any better. Our group won't be coming back.”

• Manager was very rude and talked down to me.

“We went with 4 kids and 4 adults. We sat on patio. Were told we could not all sit together and must sit at separate tables. Manager came out and belittled us in front of other customers. I pulled him inside and told him there was a better way to handle things. Manager blew me off and said whatever sir many times. Don't take your kids. Try to act like a high end restaurant yet sitting in plastic chairs on patio with two beer cans on ground. Manger really made us feel bad by saying things loudly in front of other customers and not just pulling someone aside or coming over to our table. Very rude! We won't return.”

“Did not even taste like Chinese food. The food was very bland, didn't have much taste to it. Spent around ten dollars for a good size plate of food that could feed 2 and was not worth it at all. My girlfriend and I went here and we were so upset. The fortune cookies were the best part, seriously!”

“This is my favorite restaurant! The steaks have always been cooked to perfection. The portions are great and the salad bar is wonderful (an old bathtub filled with ice!). I love the cowboy atmosphere and the excellent view of the river. (Not to mention the ties hanging everywhere!) I never have had a bad experience there!”

“This restaurant has been a family favorite for over 20 years. We entertain musicians from all over the world and we always take them to The Danish Inn and they are always pleased. We celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, etc. It is so affordable to feed a family here with the buffet. I am also Danish, so this is very special. We can take visitors to the Danish Windmill, the Danish Museum, antiquing at The Egg Crate. I highly recommend this wonderful eating establishment. You won't leave hungry or dissatisfied.”

• Alligator without a life.

“The food is alright. The part that makes this restaurant receive a low rating from me is the fact that there is an alligator that sits in a glass container so small it couldn't even turn around if it wanted to. This makes for a very poor and saddening experience. Lost my appetite the moment I saw it.”

• Fantastic food in a great atmosphere and a perfect place.

“This was the best food I have ever eaten. The bar staff was courteous and respectful and made us fell at home from the start. The waiter was a young kid, but he was very nice and looked after us well. The food was delicious and attractive on the plate it arrived hot and in a reasonable amount of time. We took our time and ordered another Chocolate Martini and a Berries and Cream Martini as a prelude to dessert. The restaurant was hassle free and I felt I was treated with respect and courtesy and wasn't getting inferior treatment just because I am a woman. A really nice place with excellent service, and wonderful food, I recommend anyone try it for dinner. I could not be happier with the warm reception I was given in dear old Iowa.”

“I am Chinese. I say the food is really Chinese. They have separate menus, one for Chinese food, the other for Americanized Chinese food. I only tried the former. The taste and the amount are all very satisfying. The only drawback is waiting. Don't go if you are in rush.”

“The Canteen is a wonderful piece of Americana offering a delicious one-of-a-kind sandwich. I grew up in Ottumwa and not trip home is complete without a Canteen. I like mine dry with everything, and I almost always do a reorder. If you're within 100 miles or so, I suggest you try one!”

“I used to eat here when I attended Iowa State back in day. Now that my son is going, I thought I would stop in and try it out again. I guess the original owners are running it again I never knew ownership changed hands but I guess it did. I would recommend any of the steaks with the De Burgo sauce it's good stuff. My wife had the Orange Ruffy and loved it. She said it had a nice light flavor. It seemed a little on the pricey side but considering we had steak and fish, the price isn't any different from any other places.”

• Absolute best tenderloin in the country! Good Mexican food also.
• Kind of small and hard to find, but worth the search!

“From Chicago to KC, you will not find a better tenderloin, and I've tried a ton! I actually watched a guy hammering out fresh pork chops with a tendering hammer before throwing them into a batch of some of the best tasting crunchy coating. Mexican food is pretty good too, and other stuff available for picky kids is pretty good, because my kids eat it all, and that happens at no other restaurant, not even McDonnell's! It is kind of hard to find for out-of-towner, but close to the ball park. But it is well worth seeking out, just head toward the river from the ball park and it is about a quarter mile east on the right side of the road, across from the Y.”

“The lounge provided a very friendly home town atmosphere. It is a place where friends gather to visit, watch sorting events. It also provides smoking facility outside. Holiday festivities such as a Halloween party and new years eve gathering with music. There are also karaoke events.”

• Nice settings. Clean, friendly. Good chicken wing appetizer.
• Incredibly bad beef curry.

“I dined just recently at the Mekong, and was a little dismayed. I had the Mekong chicken wings as well, and these were quite good, but my entree of curry beef with rice was without a doubt the worst curry dish I've every sampled in my life. The menu is very sparse on details for this dish (it says mainly beef cooked with curry). It doesn't mention the veggies (which in this case I'm assuming were bamboo shoots, some cabbage and onions. I could be wrong as they were cooked to a blandish consistency). The menu lists spicy. This dish was very spicy. The beef in the dish (which I'm taking on face value, because the flavor of beef was devoid of this particular dish) was badly cooked, and the texture itself was like eating a used dish sponge. The veggies in question actually tasted dirty (as in bits of unidentifiable particulate all through out. Too bad, because place does really look nice. They've recently moved down riverside drive from the recent flooding, and the new location has ambiance. It just doesn't have decent food.”

• It is close to another restaurant, that serves decent food.
• There were roaches in my food.

“I have had horrible service every time I have been here. Not to mention substandard food quality. I went to the restroom there in August and was using the restroom, when I walked in, it reeked! I was washing my hands when the Manager, appeared from one of the stalls. He quickly walked back into the kitchen. Yes you heard me right. He never washed his hands! I walked by the kitchen and noticed him making a pizza. When I sat (feeling nausea) I look at our pizza and saw something under the cheese. a roach. We left without saying anything.”

• The food was pretty disappointing. Not worth the money.

“I was so disappointed in this place. Had been told it was good so I had high expectations, but the food was not that good. It was later in the evening when I went, but thats no excuse. The night I went the food was about on par with Denny's. It isn't as cheap as Denny's, though. Go to Perkins.”

“The roasted chicken on Thursday night is great. It's a small town bar. The Big City traveler may consider it a dive, that's ok. The people are friendly and everyone seems to enjoy themselves while at the Fin.”
