• Fantastic food in a great atmosphere and a perfect place.

“This was the best food I have ever eaten. The bar staff was courteous and respectful and made us fell at home from the start. The waiter was a young kid, but he was very nice and looked after us well. The food was delicious and attractive on the plate it arrived hot and in a reasonable amount of time. We took our time and ordered another Chocolate Martini and a Berries and Cream Martini as a prelude to dessert. The restaurant was hassle free and I felt I was treated with respect and courtesy and wasn't getting inferior treatment just because I am a woman. A really nice place with excellent service, and wonderful food, I recommend anyone try it for dinner. I could not be happier with the warm reception I was given in dear old Iowa.”

“I am Chinese. I say the food is really Chinese. They have separate menus, one for Chinese food, the other for Americanized Chinese food. I only tried the former. The taste and the amount are all very satisfying. The only drawback is waiting. Don't go if you are in rush.”

• Absolutely nothing.

“The Canteen is a wonderful piece of Americana offering a delicious one-of-a-kind sandwich. I grew up in Ottumwa and not trip home is complete without a Canteen. I like mine dry with everything, and I almost always do a reorder. If you're within 100 miles or so, I suggest you try one!”

“I used to eat here when I attended Iowa State back in day. Now that my son is going, I thought I would stop in and try it out again. I guess the original owners are running it again I never knew ownership changed hands but I guess it did. I would recommend any of the steaks with the De Burgo sauce it's good stuff. My wife had the Orange Ruffy and loved it. She said it had a nice light flavor. It seemed a little on the pricey side but considering we had steak and fish, the price isn't any different from any other places.”

“I love Chinese food, but after 3 bad experiences, I go to Hy-Vee on Agency for Chinese food. Maybe if you order from the menu it will be alright, but too much MSG in the food on the buffet.”

• Absolute best tenderloin in the country! Good Mexican food also.
• Kind of small and hard to find, but worth the search!

“From Chicago to KC, you will not find a better tenderloin, and I've tried a ton! I actually watched a guy hammering out fresh pork chops with a tendering hammer before throwing them into a batch of some of the best tasting crunchy coating. Mexican food is pretty good too, and other stuff available for picky kids is pretty good, because my kids eat it all, and that happens at no other restaurant, not even McDonnell's! It is kind of hard to find for out-of-towner, but close to the ball park. But it is well worth seeking out, just head toward the river from the ball park and it is about a quarter mile east on the right side of the road, across from the Y.”

“The lounge provided a very friendly home town atmosphere. It is a place where friends gather to visit, watch sorting events. It also provides smoking facility outside. Holiday festivities such as a Halloween party and new years eve gathering with music. There are also karaoke events.”

• Nice settings. Clean, friendly. Good chicken wing appetizer.
• Incredibly bad beef curry.

“I dined just recently at the Mekong, and was a little dismayed. I had the Mekong chicken wings as well, and these were quite good, but my entree of curry beef with rice was without a doubt the worst curry dish I've every sampled in my life. The menu is very sparse on details for this dish (it says mainly beef cooked with curry). It doesn't mention the veggies (which in this case I'm assuming were bamboo shoots, some cabbage and onions. I could be wrong as they were cooked to a blandish consistency). The menu lists spicy. This dish was very spicy. The beef in the dish (which I'm taking on face value, because the flavor of beef was devoid of this particular dish) was badly cooked, and the texture itself was like eating a used dish sponge. The veggies in question actually tasted dirty (as in bits of unidentifiable particulate all through out. Too bad, because place does really look nice. They've recently moved down riverside drive from the recent flooding, and the new location has ambiance. It just doesn't have decent food.”

• It is close to another restaurant, that serves decent food.
• There were roaches in my food.

“I have had horrible service every time I have been here. Not to mention substandard food quality. I went to the restroom there in August and was using the restroom, when I walked in, it reeked! I was washing my hands when the Manager, appeared from one of the stalls. He quickly walked back into the kitchen. Yes you heard me right. He never washed his hands! I walked by the kitchen and noticed him making a pizza. When I sat (feeling nausea) I look at our pizza and saw something under the cheese. a roach. We left without saying anything.”

• The food was pretty disappointing. Not worth the money.

“I was so disappointed in this place. Had been told it was good so I had high expectations, but the food was not that good. It was later in the evening when I went, but thats no excuse. The night I went the food was about on par with Denny's. It isn't as cheap as Denny's, though. Go to Perkins.”

“The roasted chicken on Thursday night is great. It's a small town bar. The Big City traveler may consider it a dive, that's ok. The people are friendly and everyone seems to enjoy themselves while at the Fin.”

“The place would be a romantic setting for a couple or a few friends. The large square tables our group of 15 had made it difficult to converse quietly with the people that sat across the table (they were too far away). We ordered dessert that was very delicious but did not get dinner. I was amazed that the place had a cute kid's bathroom but did not offer a kid's menu. Reasonable price suggestions for a kid's menu are spaghetti, personal size peanut butter & jelly pizza, mini corn dogs and grilled cheese.”

• Cool, old train station with great potential- in the hands of the right management. Good prices.
• Unclean atmosphere and poor customer service.

“A good building for a historic restaurant setting. Now for the bad: clean your restaurant! Keeping dirty, dusty old memorabilia stuck to every wall & in every corner & unappetizing. If you are going to do this, at least dust it off once per decade. As for the service, find a wait staff that doesn't act like they want to commit suicide. Additionally, they might try to bathe regularly, wear clean clothes & maintain proper dental hygiene. The food is, of course nothing special- just greasy fried stuff but not too bad either- about what one should expect in a small town. But the food can be overlooked before the atmosphere & service.”

• The place is inviting and a great environment to hang out with friends!

“I've been going to Wallaby's for over ten years now. In fact, I met my husband there. It is a great place to go after work and hang out with friends. There were many a night that we we went in right after we got out of work and would stay until the place closed. The wait staff they hire are friendly and willing to go the extra mile. Most all of them are constantly smiling and seem to enjoy their jobs. Now that I have two kids, we still go there! The owner is amazing and knows us by name. He acknowledges us and thanks us for coming every time we see him there, whether we are spending money on dinner or just there for a beer or two. It is no wonder it has stood the test of time 20 years! (Yeah, we were at the celebration party!) it is just a fun place to watch games, hang out and be with friends or family.”

“Lunches are excellent. They are fast, tasty, and reasonably priced. Lunch specials change every day and a monthly menu is available so you can plan to be there for your favorites. The tenderloins are excellent. Members of the staff are all very friendly. The cookies are excellent and a real good buy. Definitely try the cookies.”

“We liked it a lot. We did both get sick thereafter, though, but there was a little thing with the jalapenos possibly being tainted at all restaurants, so I can't necessarily say it was this restaurant's fault. The food was huge. I do wish there were chips, though, as an appetizer.”

“This place was a mess. The food was good but the old house was poorly lit, overgrown yard, in major need of painting and cleaning. The service was extremely slow. We were there on a night when only three tables were occupied and it took much to long for ordering, serving and finally paying the bill. There are better places than this.”

“My family went to eat there tonight 9/19/2008, The drink greeter had dirty wet hands, the cashier was pushy and tried to rush me. The waitress didn't even bother to see if I wanted more water in my glass. The food wasn't prepared correctly. I love to get the volcano chocolate cake to eat. That was dried out. Even when they got fresh put out it was overcooked. I was terribly displeased with the visit. I told my husband not to bring me to that Golden Corral again. It was just a very bad experience.”

“Wow, this place is fantastic. The decor is intriguing, with leopard and tiger prints and comfortable armchairs in the dining room, but after the visual impact of this exciting dining atmosphere you get a taste of the food, and that is when the amazement starts again. I thought arrived in a parallel universe, because I haven't seen a menu this wide scale and varied for years. I have gotten so accustomed to the ubiquitous nature. I had the Fried Calamari which was deliciously light and crispy. It was wonderful and the flavor was so good I didn't even use the garlic sauce they brought along with it. I always eat there and I am comfortable bringing clients there and I am also comfortable being by myself and sitting at the granite bar and having my dinner alone and chatting with the bartender.”

“Have visited Camp David's twice, soon going for the 3rd time. Excellent food, great service and unbelievable atmosphere. You must at least go out on the patio/deck and enjoy the view of the Iowa River. It is one of Iowa's restaurant gems that you just do not hear about.”

• Love the new location, very close to the intersection of two main highways through town!
• Although very friendly, the last waiters we had kept mixing up peoples orders.

“Gator's is a great place to go with 2 or 20 people. Service is always friendly and the food is great! Burlington is my hometown and although the location, staff and even menu has changed. it is always a must on our trips through town!”

“That place is a mess total mess they need to clean it up a lot. I have seen cooks wearing no gloves making the food eating right in front of the door so I can see in plain sight. Loud music coming from behind the door it was quite annoying and the owner is a total douche bag paying his employees that work real hard for him $7.25.”
