“We had a delicious, ample breakfast at Birreria Viennese in Rome in April, 2009. It was open early and the staff was friendly and accommodating. I loved the decor and was sorry we did not have time enough in Rome to return for dinner.”

“We found the waiters to be arrogant and extremely unprofessional for a restaurant that charges such exorbitant prices. Food was cold and when we complained, no apologies were made, suddenly they didn't understand English. The only good thing about this restaurant is the piano player. Don't go there.”

“We ate lunch there last Sunday, during the Rome Marathon. We had walked by it earlier in the morning and stopped on our way back to our hotel. Was just starting to fill up, we just had pizzas, which were very good, and beers. I would go again, looking at the tables around us the food all looked wonderful. Waiters were attentive but the place was really filling up as we left, so may not have been that great after, but who cares, you're in Rome! Seemed mostly like locals were there when we were.”

“The food was, simply put, not very good. I had a basic pasta dish and it tasted 'soapy/chemically'. My husband chicken was rare in the inside, which of course is a very dangerous preparation for chicken. We complained to the staff multiple times but our waiter (and the other waiters who we flagged down) remained indifferent to our requests, and at times down right rude. In a city that boasts some of the best restaurants in the world, please do not waste your time at this sub-bar establishment.”

“The place it's warm and nice, as soon as you get in you find a huge grill where a nice old lady cook a load of sausages and monster-steaks and smelly Piadinas! I sat in a veranda in front a big garden with a wheel in the middle and I got my ordering kind of pasta whith meet sauce called Strazzapreti and a beef-steak (700g!),every now and then they use to bring you that tasty Piadinas just cooked on the old grill. Everything good and generous (maybe bit too much). Waiters quick and polite.”

“This past month was the third time I went to this restaurant and I took a nasty surprise, as the last time I called Pizza are good and not too expensive, but I was surprised when paying the bill and warned that there was no tip. To all those who visit Rome, I suggest that this restaurant, Evita's, there are many more and less thieves!”

“Under an circumstances do not eat here. Food totally not worth the money, fish is charged by the weight and they know how to catch you with this. Our starter cost 63.00! They charge for bread which you do not eat, they have an outrageous service charge (for what I do not know) absolute disgrace of a restaurant is all I can say about this.”

“We had a large group (nearly 50) that had lunch here during a tour of Rome. It is a small two room restaurant. One large rectangular room and a smaller square room. For an intimate dinner the small room is the best choice. We had more than enough room for our entire group in the large room. Service with fifty people can be a chore and it was here. That said the food was outstanding! The atmosphere of the restaurant was also outstanding. I highly recommend this restaurant. Fair warning: Some of the food is spicy hot, but VERY good.”

“Never again! The greatest disappointment in food during 5 days in Rome. The service was hectic, the waiter impatient, unwilling to communicate with guests. Meal we ordered looked good on the menu, but what we got was not what we ordered, and it was a complete disaster: Zucchini blossom, a lump of dough, the pasta salty and greasy, the cheese stuffed rolls totally bland, the lamb roast smelled of mutton, the dessert, profiteroles drowned in chocolate syrup from a bottle. All of this served on the table without any style. There cannot be another reason for the long line of prospective victims waiting to be seated.”

“Located in a dark damp dank busy alleyway. Frequented mostly by tourists. Poor service. If a native appears they will be given a table ahead of you, no matter how long you have waited. Be sure to bring cash as often the card service is not working!”

“I've been eating at La Ramp for 20-plus years. It's a local favorite too. The pastas and sauces are sublime and dreamy. The fried calamari is so light and crispy, the tiramisu is unlike any other you've had. EXCELLENT. We are our third generation of my family eating here. It is my favorite restaurant in the world.”

“Murphy's is a fun place with good beer and friendly bartenders. It's a good place to go when you are homesick for the US while in Turin. The food is good too. Big downside are the bathrooms. Come on, owners!”

“We are in Rome on a regular basis to spend time with family. Ciccia Bomba is one of the places that we return to year after year. The menu changes constantly depending upon what is in season, availability etc. If your server suggests something go with it. Everything is always fresh and incredibly well prepared. You will also find one of the best pizzas in this part of the city. The wine selection is also very nice. You can't beat a great meal here and then a walk through the neighborhood after dinner. The food and service here are consistently very good and the location is very convenient.”

“Fantastic location, in a truly wonderful building with friendly attentive staff. There, that's the good bits. The alarm bells started to ring. My wife and I both chose the meat based tasting menu. The starter was supposed to be veal but it was simply a grilled, whole chicken breast, scored on the surface with asparagus laid into the cuts. I was going to complain but I make a point of never sending food back or complaining. If it's bad enough to complain about, or send back, then I leave and as it was a special occasion, I gave it the benefit of the doubt. Furthermore, as well as the veal being chicken, the asparagus had not been trimmed properly and thus we had the pleasure of the stringy base to deal with. After that came veal cannelloni, which may have been veal, but the cannelloni was rolled pancake, not pasta. On the plus side, it was much better than the starter veal. The main course was braised veal cheek, one of my favorite cuts when cooked well, which surprisingly this was. However, the accompaniment was four blobs of cold, relatively tasteless carrot foam. Not bad but some simple steamed vegetables would have been much better. Dessert was some awful banana concoction, where the fruit had been lightly cooked, dredged (and I mean dredged) in cinnamon and plated with some chocolate mousse. Once again, it was not vile but amateurish in the extreme. The wine list was extensive and the prices not as steep as I expected. I plumped for a bottle of Quintarelli's fine Valpolicella Superior at a reasonable 40. We were also treated to a free Prosecco as an appetizer and a free glass of Sauternes with the dessert, which went some way to mitigating the dreary food. All in all, I would not say that the cooking lived up to the staff or the wonderful location avoid.”

“I saw some people were worried when the bill arrived on their table, because the prices are a little bit harder than these you can read in your guide, and there is any menu (and prices) outside of the restaurant. The food is plain and very poor in flavor and originality, the only positive thing in S. Teodoro is the cellar, there is a good choice of wines, and, surprisingly! They are no expensive.”

“I don't know what Susan and Paula consider to be a good restaurant but there review of Cafe de Paris is way off base. The staff is good, the food is great (the ingredients are FRESH), and the overall value is fine for what you are getting. Cafe de Paris would give any high class Virginia restaurant a run for its money and do I really need to talk about England.”

“If you want to treat yourself to fine Bolognese cuisine in a charming atmosphere, get a taxi and drive the extra 10 minutes or so. Situated on one of the ancient Roman roads leading away from clatter of Downtown, Bitone was recommended to us by an older gentleman at the hotel who promised we wouldn't be disappointed -we weren't. The place is charming with lots of history behind it, Murano glass and a chef who greets you with a smile as inviting as the food. The minute we bit into complimentary Crostini with melted cheese we knew we were in for a treat. The wine list is excellent and the waiters are knowledgeable and friendly. I had Tortelloni, (a local specialty) cooked perfectly al dente and filled with squash that made it a rich sensual experience that begged to be eaten slowly. My friend had had another pasta with Carbonera sauce that was to die for. There was even a square bubbly white cracker among the breadsticks that tasted like nothing I've ever had before. Everything we ordered was delicious. The best meal of our trip to Milan/Bologna/Rome. If I get to Bologna again, I'm heading straight to Bitone.”

“Actually I never saw the restaurant, if there ever was one. But don't expect all the glam that many people spoke from. Never saw the models, was far over crowded, and the drinks much too expensive. I earn enough money, but would rather spend it elsewhere. Plus the music was very weak- maybe you like old disco tunes. For all the hype- Corso Como is just ok- seen much better in many other European cities.”

“I visited Ciao Bella for new years eve 2008. They had a fixed menu which at the cost of 70-90 euro and the location is very nice. The menu looked ok but was so not worth the money. The "basil faulty" like waiter also refused to show us the wine list. He had a suggestion of three wines and he gave up a lower price than the actual price which we later where charged. This is a classic tourist trap located nicely on via Veneto. There are a lot of better restaurants a bit further up the road. I would like to thank Ciao Bella anyway for now I know 2008 can't be any worse.”

“Based on the recommendations on this site, my wife and I thought we would try this restaurant during a recent trip to Rome. We were severely disappointed. We tried a number of appetizers and ordered first and second courses and none of the items we tried on the menu were of the same quality as we found elsewhere in the city. The flavor was very bland and some dishes came out rather cold. Still we tried to enjoy the evening as it is close to beautiful piazza Novena, but our server was downright rude. My wife and I have both worked in the service industry in our youth so we're not expecting someone to dote on us hand and foot we just want common courtesy. And there wasn't a language barrier either he spoke very good English or we know some Italian. He was simply disinterested, brash and gave the impression that we were wasting his time. One last note, I am the kind of person who gets dirty silverware at a restaurant and just cleans it himself with a Napkin instead of complaining, but if this sort of offense bothers you, than Bram ante fails on this level as well. This is easily the worst food and dining experience we had in our three weeks in Rome. There are dozens of restaurants in the piazza Novena area a number of which we tried (but not mentioning here to keep the objectivity of this review in tact) and its a safe bet that you have a far superior experience by dining elsewhere.”

“Fantastic interior, a restaurant in Italy that even in Summer (I was there in August) I would say eat indoors - windows open anyway and its beautiful wooden furniture merit it. Service good (for Italy) and great value, good quality food.”

“It is in a good location, however the service was very minimal, had to pour own wine, the waiters didn't know who had ordered which dishes. The food was tasteless, bland and very poor quality ingredients. The menu read very well, however the execution of the dishes lead a lot to the imagination. It was very expensive and there are much better restaurants in Rome. The wine was very pricy. The bread stale. All in all it was not a good evening and would definitely not go back.”

“The Rough Guide to Italy recommended this place, and we were impressed with the pizza which was a fairly good size and very tasty, and quite inexpensive. However, we were dealt with in a rude manner, asked to move on when still drinking our wine, and brought the bill without having asked for it, even though we still had some wine left - basically an unsubtle hint for us to move so they could have our table (onto which they rammed two separate other couples so it resembled eating in a school canteen) for more people. When we asked if we could have some more drinks, we were told no, without an explanation. I would definitely not recommend this place to anyone, as we no longer found an "old Rome institution", but merely a place which cares only about raking in the money and having as many customers as possible, rather than ensuring that people eating there are having a nice time.”

“It may have been the night, but we had one fantastic dining experience! The owner waited on us and guided us through course after course of totally amazing seafood and wine culminating with a visit from the dessert trolley and a molten chocolate cake that I would travel back to Milan for alone! I also felt like I was in a scene from a movie given the quantity of model-quality patrons seated around us.”

“2 fish dishes, grilled eggplant, spinach, and a half bottle of wine at 150 euros? Seriously, the wine was only 14 euros. The prices on the menu appear to be reasonable, but the fish is charged by weight which isn't apparent and they don't ask you how much you want. The eggplant was tasteless and cold. The restaurant is in a nice area and the staff is very friendly, but the meal shouldn't have cost half of what it did. We felt like screwed tourists which is what we were.”

“This is my favorite restaurant in all of Rome. The atmosphere is unparalleled by any other if you ask to sit within the cave-like area of the restaurant at night. It is not fancy so that you have to look too nice and I would say it is off the beaten track of tourists. Everything there from the meat to the pasta is magnificent! Their classic appetizers are also marvelous! Not to mention the friendly staff. A true gem.”

“An excellent atmosphere and perfect place for our gathering. There was a superb host, he arranged everything perfectly and he ensured all of our guests were happy and all of their needs met. We could not falters the food, superb quality beef and fish meals. The wine cellar and features of the basement were enchanting and set the mood for this Italian city. Second to none service and friendly banter helped everyone relax and enjoy the good food and very good wine.”

“We went there on his recommendation of our grandson and we found the restaurant to be wonderful. Please try the homemade Gnocchi and elegant meatballs! All in all, this is a wonderful place built in a historic site. Please ask for directions as you will probably have to walk here. It is a crowded and joyous neighborhood; every one is friendly and questions are answered most cordially. Do not be afraid if you do not speak Italian, as in most places in Rome, English is spoken very well here.”

“We stumbled across this place and it is the classic, 'don't judge a book by its cover'. From the outside, it actually looked less inviting than surrounding restaurants. However, once inside it was a great atmosphere, the prices were great (for roam) and we were so happy we took the chance. Go there.”

“I have eaten at Bottega del Vino several times since 2000 and it remains my favorite Verona restaurant. The wine list is extensive and daunting, but the waiters are knowledgeable and very helpful. I haven't had a disappointing dish, though the polenta with bacon, which I had expected to have pieces of bacon through it, was huge and draped with slices of bacon - far too much for two to share. Go, enjoy the fantastic local food, enjoy local wines of an unexpectedly high standard, and soak up the history of this lovely restaurant.”

“Their extensive list of beers is impressive, until they tell you that there are only 2 or 3 of them available. Don't ask for a drop of water to cool-down the scorching water they provide for tea, as they'll refuse to give you any (unless you want to buy a large bottle of fizzy water). Oh, and don't ask for an explanation as to why, as they won't give you one. If you enjoy sitting outside on a stinky piazza, opposite a fish market and overly filled bins - with cramped seating in the gutter, this is the place for you.”

“Maitre d' and waiters sought our attention to get us into the restaurant and then took forever to take our order. Order was incomplete. Brought wrong items, and then claimed it was not what we told him. Watched waiter follow "ladies of the night" down the street. Other tables had problems as well. Great piano player/singer who put a positive spin on the ambience.”

“The host waved us down from the piazza. He made it seem as though he had been waiting for us to stop in. Located directly in front of the Piazza Novena. Great for people watching when you sit outside. Superb service. Ask for Mario. We just went for drinks. We were given a complimentary dish of olives. We didn't try the food, so I can't comment on that.”

“This is a super cool restaurant in a beautiful quiet garden setting (away from the other cafes on the same street since it's as if it's inside a house (or rather mansion) area. Cool crowd and best of all, every quiet. Food is good but for Italian standards on the pricey side (note for US City standards it was on the average side as good food is cheaper in Italy than here but for Italian standards it was a bit expensive). When you finish you can go and check out their super cool boutique and book shop. Very nice place.”

“This is a wonderful place to have lunch. Entering through the Salumeria side you see greeted with the pungent smells of what Parma is renowned for. The dining area is clean and bright with cook books and wine catalog's laying on the window sills for you perusal. Menu was traditional and extensive. The food was hot, delicious and reasonably priced. Outstanding!”

“We ate several times in Luchin's in 2000 while there for a month. The food was always good and ample. Locals crowd the place so it must be popular. There isn't much ambiance but if you want good wholesome food (this is no pizza joint) you will be pleased here. A specialty which is very tasty and offered regardless of your order is "Faranacia(?)" ”

“Six of us spent time in Verona watching the opera, looking at the city and traveling to the Lakes. We loved it so much we have returned and are returning again this summer. The Maffei is the one restaurant we have returned to, and will again. On every visit we were made very welcome, with excellent food both before the opera and when we decided to have an evening of eating and drinking the best Italy could offer other than Opera.
