“Delicious food and good service. The restaurant is pretty small and was busy when we were there. I will definitely be recommending this to my friends and will look forward to eating there again next time I am in Calgary.”

“I really like the food but, Every thing else is great, service is A1 and really nice people work here. I have been eating here for lunch and breakfast for over 3 years.”

“I'm a regular at Jack's and I have never had a bad experience. I even take my business lunches there so we can get the crayons out and draw plans on the paper table cloths. It is a great mix of sports bar and casual dining and the staff is always fantastic to deal with.”

“Salad was withered and dressing was watery. Waitress talked and only visited our table to unceremoniously toss my platter on the table, irritated that I would not agree to order the buffet.”

“The worst service ever. The owner is so mean to the clients and the food is horrible. I took my co workers out for lunch and I was so embarrassed as to how bad the service and experience is. The owner is extremely rude and actually picked a fight with me. I had to eventually leave after I paid the bill. I was about to call the police but I don't think my boss would have been to happy. I don't recommend this place to anyone. Also, I heard from another east Indian coworker that the guy (owner) actually checks the websites and fills in good reviews on his own restaurant. So be careful. This is the reason I am writing this.”

“We have spent plenty of time cooking authentic Cajun food with friends from Louisiana and eating Cajun food on the Gulf Coast and running cooking contests. On our first and last trip here these charlatans tried to fob off dried out old fried rice that tasted like it had been doused in soy sauce as Jambalaya. It was absolute rubbish and anyone who cooked such garbage in Louisiana would be bound up in monofilament line and dragged out into the Gulf behind a shrimper as shark bait.”

“I think it is an interesting place. Great staff, attentive to your needs. They fix any problems immediately. The food has always been good. The prices great. The atmosphere, I love it. Family restaurant, but still cozy enough for a couple who want to spend time together. Love the singer waiter.”

“I had the unfortunate experience of first visiting the curry house about 8 years ago with my then roommate. Both of us were looking for a fairly affordable lunch and maybe a couple of drinks. He over romanced a bottle of Indian beer when I tried to order a domestic one when we first arrived. I thought, wow! This guy is really passionate about this beer. He then continued his overly aggressive approach when we tried to order. If you consider yourself a fan or an expert on Indian cuisine prepare to be challenged and insulted! He also told us outright that we could not share anything on the menu (including side dishes). Everything is single serving! the final straw was when receiving our bill. That fantastic beer that he sold me on turned out to be 11 dollars! &bringing our fairly affordable lunch to around 50 dollars before the tip. I was left fuming and vowed never to go back. I unfortunately had to return last year for an office function and to my surprise, it was the same overbearing blowhard running the place! The experience was not only unsatisfying but uncomfortable for almost everyone at the table. Later, I was told by the two people who arrived first that they were greeted by a set of customers on their way out the door who warned them about the service. I decided that I needed to add this review when reading how others have had very similar experiences with the curry house. It amazes me that this place is still around. I guess overcharging your customers must make up for bad word of mouth. Believe me; this establishment does not deserve your business. If youre in the mood to be patronized and gouged enjoy!”

“I am not sure why this is such a Calgary tradition, it is burgers grilled and left to soak in a watery sauce. I do not recommend this to anyone visiting.”

“Ordered take out; found the food over priced and barely edible. Simple, not good, never again. Doors should be closed for business. Naan was brutal, ordered garlic naan. Couldn't find any flavor of garlic on the hard naan. This was just awful. The owner was nice but the place was dead. I should have read some of these reviews before I tried the place. Disgusting! Sorry this is honest opinion the owner should seriously revamp his dishes and start from scratch.”

“Caffe Beano did change hands a few months back and I must say for the better. With the dramatically improved espresso and brewed coffee (new machines) coupled with expanded space, a warm and atmosphere while still maintaining the funky and quirky character. Service a bit slow (could be demand versus capacity) and staff could learn to be more personable but a great place of community.”

“My 3 adult children and I went to The Curry House and had a wonderful time. The waiter (owner?) was very helpful in explaining the menu, as none of us have much experience in eating Indian food. Each of us was able to order something we loved, based on his information. We ended up ordering the Samosas for an appetizer and the mango ice cream for dessert, as we felt right at home right from the start and we were not in a hurry to leave. It felt like a family restaurant, serving good traditional food. The waiter was very respectful of my handicapped son. He spoke to my son directly and waited for his reply. In this busy city, that is very uncommon. We all decided we would visit again soon, bringing other family members. We loved it.”

“Beano has recently been sold to new management (as of April 1, 2007) and is not living up to the Name it had established for itself prior. The service I received was the absolute worst. No "hello" or smile, just "what do you want?!¿ I used to be a regular, but I just don't feel welcome or comfortable there anymore. Cleanliness is no longer a priority at this establishment and neither are pleasantries. Coffee is comparable to the dispensing machines found in cafeterias. I guess new, does not always mean there will be improvement. Don't waste your time going to this establishment...”

“I had heard from several business associates that Beano was the place to go for coffee while in Calgary and decided to give it a try when I was there in April 2007. After ordering my latte, which incidentally was lukewarm, weak, and just plain yucky, I sat at one of the tables and started to notice the state of this coffee shop. The floors were filthy, the servers handled money and then baked goods without hand washing, the amount of fruit flies in the shop was frightful, and there was a funny, garbage-like smell wafting from the back hallway. As I sat thinking, I was approached by two women informing me that they were the new owners of Beano. At first they seemed nice, but they proceeded to talk endlessly about themselves and how important they were to the business and the community. I was not the only one to be on the receiving end of their self-serving rants that day. I was disgusted by their pretentious ego-boosting behavior and decided to leave this bad experience behind me. It is my understanding that prior to the recent sale, Beano was established for over 14 years. I think an era of great coffee and service has ended with the sale of this business. ”

“Best curry dishes and oven baked samaras in Calgary. Period. Quality of the meats is extraordinary. A tad pricey, but well worth it. Try one of the creamy kayo dishes if burning vandal isn't your thing. Typically you can get fresh chopped chili peppers to add spice to any dish by your own hand. Horrible decor left over from being a gondola pizza so the atmosphere is basically leftover 1970s with no updating.”

“Thee worst server I ever met, man looked like he needed to be put out of his misery, the ceaser salad had the biggest pieces of salad ever, hardly dressed to. Not impressed what so ever, what a waste of a Sunday.”

“My husband and I finally got a date night and we went to Jack Astor's and it was a big mistake. Everything that could have went wrong did. We sat down at our table and ordered right away. We started with an appetizer, which we were to receive right away. However, our steaks came first. I reminded them about the appetizers and they took the steaks to the back and brought out the dried ribs. 5 minutes later they brought us our steaks, which obviously we just sitting in the kitchen because they we cold. They didn't do our steaks as asked and nor did they bring the steak we ordered (we got strip loins when we ordered sirloins). My mushrooms came out 25 minutes later, which were to be enjoyed with my steak. I told the waitress to forget the mushrooms. They also brought us drinks out of mistake and tried to take credit for being nice, but our waitress said it was just another screw up. The manager gave us a discount of 15.00, big deal. Our bill was $43.00 after the discount. We were charged for their continual strew ups. We were charged the price of the steak we didn't order, plus charged for the mushrooms I never received, the steaks were very under cooked to our liking and the whole time our waitress told us that the kitchen staff were idiots. The manager did nothing to clear this terrible evening up. It was awful I will never eat there again, but do you blame me?!”

“The food is ridiculously over priced and bland. It was by far was not as good as Namaskar which is nearby. The man that owns the place was a complete jerk. And the portions are tiny. Do not go to this restaurant it is AWFUL!”

“This was one of the worst dining experiences of my life! I love Indian food but the curry here was very bland. The waiter (owner) was extremely rude. My friend and I both ordered curry dishes with rice but we did not want to order nan since it cost extra and we just wanted a light lunch. The waiter was offended that we would order naan, since it's a "necessary" part of an Indian meal. I asked him if it was "necessary", why do we need to pay extra for naan as an option. He got angry about that, then told us that we should order some more expensive curries since the ones we selected were not the most flavorful ones. He was right; as I said earlier, they were extremely bland, even watery. He would not smile at us from the moment we entered, did not say a word when he delivered the food, and glared at us while we ate, paid and left. You could not pay me enough to go back there.”

“I'd love to say something positive about this place but I really can't find anything to say other than the location is fairly central. The service was so poor, so rude - to the point that we were not ALLOWED to order what we wanted as it wasn't traditional! Apparently you MUST have rice with the curry (I'm not a rice fan - like it with naan only) and you can NOT have chai tea until after your meal. This was enforced. I have traveled around the world and prefer many third world countries bare decor to this place. Awful decor, awful food. Please stay away or you will regret it. Simply the worst restaurant experience of my life. ”

“If you want to be served by the rudest, most unpredictable server (whom is the owner) this place is for you. Everything was so terrible. He definitely has a tendency towards violence. Check out the reviews at yahoo. You may find it interesting. DO NOT GO HERE!”

“I have tried to order food from here twice. The first time I ordered 2 naans the owner said it would be 10 minutes. I said I would be there in an hour. He said call back in 50 min and hung up. The second time my mother ordered food and changed one dish in the order at the last minute. She was told to call back when she knew what she wanted and the owner hung up on her. When I went there to ask them why they did that (being eight months pregnant at the time) the owner grabbed me by the arm and pushed me outside.”

“I went to Nellies on 17th for a Sunday brunch. The service was terrible! We were seated for over 20 minutes before getting our order taken. There was an empty coke can on our table from the previous diners that never got cleared. Once our meal came, we only had one knife between the two of us. We had to ask twice for another knife before getting one. Then, when we were ready to leave, our waitress was non-existent and we had to wait 25 minutes to get our bill.

“My girlfriend and I just got back from the Curry House. We had wanted to try it for some time and both of us were very disappointed I have eaten a lot of east Indian food and this place was not very good. What really ruined it was the server (or owner I guess) was very rude. I watched him put ice into my pop with his bare hands. He ended up blowing up at a customer who came to purchase a pickup meal and kicked him out. The food was overpriced and not very good. I would not recommend this place to anyone just based on the unsanitary conditions never mind the rude service and bad food.”
