“The food was great. Although we're not vegetarian it was great to try something different and very tasty. The walnut burger was lovely, as was the brownie to finish. Hard to judge the atmosphere as there were only 3 other people there during our meal. There was an optional 10% service charge which was added to the total bill - hard to refuse. We'd have given a good tip anyway but resent it being forced on us. Waitress was a bit miserable but polite - a bit of chat would have been very welcome.”

“Absolute frozen food, if that's the best the scene in Edinburgh offers. Keep it, loads more fabulous places to eat.”

“Being Italian I was looking forward to it so the opportunity arose when I visited the Edinburgh festival. I have to admit that it is very difficult to find a proper Italian deli in the UK. All my hopes disappeared when I entered the Valvona & Crolla shop, when I started reading the label and found that the product on sale were all average Italian supermarkets products with a very dear price, and not the one I would buy. The Valvona & Crolla branded products were made by big Italian companies and the only few good wines they had, but nothing more than the ones available from supermarkets, had an excessive high price. As this was not enough, we decided to stay for a coffee, it was 4pm and when reading the menu we found the affogato and ordered it. Again, another big disappointment. The affogato we received and we paid £3.95 was not more than a ball of vanilla lost in a poor espresso. Luckily, for us Italians looking for something to remind us about our country, there are other places that I would recommend.”

“Where do we start, the staff have attitude problems including the "manager", they will serve you when they can be bothered i.e. when not chatting too each other or using mobile phones. The food was cold the fist time it came out and had to be re-heated, and must not have been cooked properly as my partner was very sick about an hour after leaving the place due to what must have been food poisoning. My partner was also "propositioned" while trying to use the bathroom downstairs too, this was by the "manager" who clearly had other interests rather than his work. The whole experience was so bad we thought it was April fools day, and someone was having a laugh. Just don't waste your time here, lots of other nice cafes in the area who do have customer care.”

“I just went there for lunch to day with my friend, a girl, and the staff was rude, pushy, tried to rush us along, made snippy remarks when I asked if they had an all day breakfast. Then, they proceeded to get beside our table and talk really loud to disrupt our ability to have a conversation, changed the music when my friend said she liked it to me, and then they began slamming and clashing dishes over and over. I would never go back there.”

“I was very disappointed with the food at viva Mexico. Why? Because it had obviously been reheated. How do I know? Well, first of all it took less than 5 mines between the waitress taking our order and the food being served. And second, the plates were steaming hot and the beans were completely dried up, just as you'd expect when food comes out of a microwave. The "chef" didn't even bother giving the beans a quick stir to make it look fresh. I concur to a complaint made by another reviewer about the service. While the waitresses were generally friendly, they appeared over-worked and never once asked whether we wanted any more drinks despite us sitting with empty glasses for some time. The bathroom facilities were appalling, and I resorted to using the ones in the train station later on. With the exception of the friendly but over-worked waitresses and decent decorations, it was a very disappointing experience. Considering that each meal cost us approx 10 pounds (20 dollars), it was definitely not worth it.”

“If healthy, home-cooked food served by friendly staff in a colorful, cheery relaxed setting is your thing then you'll love this place. It had been recommended to my friend and I and it definitely lived up to expectation. The food was amazing, I had falafel which came with humors, tahini and gorgeous colorful salads all made on-site. I couldn't resist going back for the gluten free chocolate cake which was incredibly rich and moist. There was a great choice of dishes from the daily menu as well and they all looked great. I found the staff friendly and helpful and loved the laid back atmosphere. We stayed for over 2 hours, reading the papers, checking out the art exhibited and going back for more great fair trade coffee. If you're looking for a chilled out place to relax and fill up on healthy great tasting food at very reasonable prices then this is for you.”

“My wife and I had the pleasure of dining at the Atrium restaurant for my 30th birthday in July, what a find it turned out to be. We stayed a total of five days in Edinburgh and it has to be said that our dining experiences were somewhat of a mixed bag. We ate in a mixture of establishments over the days, some good, some bad and some dire- it wasn't until we ate at the Atrium that we could really say that there is great food in Edinburgh. Finding a fine dining restaurant which suited both of our palliates was a more difficult experience than we had anticipated, we were searching for an eateries with a special ambiance for our special occasion, unfortunately it seemed at first that Edinburgh is divided into two camps - cheap and cheerful (not great for a romantic atmosphere) and expensive and overcomplicated. Out of all the higher end restaurants we could not find one which had suitable food - whilst we enjoy our food, we are not foe grass or offal fans. Then we took a chance on the Atrium - what a great choice. An unexpected entry arrived in the shape of two espresso cups of pea soup it was wonderful, and even my wife who is not a fan of peas at all drank every last drop! Starters were seared scallops - beautifully cooked, and red pepper soup with lashings of fresh cooked bread. The mains were equally enjoyable. I opted for the Sea Bream which was cooked to perfection and served on a bed of green beans and asparagus with a gentle cream and tarragon sauce whilst my wife plumped for the chicken on a bed of pares an polenta with wild mushrooms - absolutely no complaints. With a pleasant bottle of Granache, the bill came to A#92.00. The service was a perfect balance of professionalism and familiarity and it was the highlight of our trip.”

“My 3 girlfriends and I had a very disappointing experience there on Tuesday night. The wooden tables were sticky as were the menus. The French fries were limp. More importantly the service was downright rude: the waitress/owner was very off-hand and abrupt, barely stopping at our table when taking our order or serving the food, so much so that she even got one of the order wrong: ice cream instead of cream. The restaurant was not busy with only 4 tables occupied at any one time. I know she has been serving there for donkeys years but she would do well to go and check out what good service is at Cafe Grande in Brunt field.”

“There is a new restaurant on this premise called Mezbaan. Absolutely brilliant food we enjoyed it very much. Mezbaan specializes in south Indian food, we had the Dosa and it was the best in Edinburgh. It opened very recently so not many people know about it. We went there hoping it was the shamiana but the restaurant was changed but we decided to try the food anyway and we have no regrets we enjoyed it very much and strongly recommend it. ”

“This place serves good food (and quite expensive compared to the other offerings in the area). The salads are fresh and healthy. The only problem is that one member of staff is particularly rude to customers, mumbling comments under her breath, and not creating a customer service ethos. I would recommend this place for the food but avoid if you care about good service. Each time I have been here I get charged a different amount for the same plate of food!

Greyfriars Bobby “Give this a miss - nothing more than a dirty old pub that happens to be next to the grave of Greyfriars Bobby”
