Founded in 1991, Vienna's Jazz Fest is a contemporary urban festival and regarded as one of Europe's top musical events. An important part of Vienna's cultural landscape, the Jazz Fest features gigs by some of the biggest names in jazz, although the festival has also branched out into the fields of blues, funk, gospel, rock and world music. Recent performers have included Herbie Hancock, Maceo Parker, Chick Corea, Patti Smith, David Byrne, Kool and the Gang, Paco de Lucia and Tricky. Concerts are performed at various locations around town, the foremost venue being the glorious Vienna State Opera. A free open-air concert is traditionally performed at Rathausplatz in front of several thousand enthusiastic jazz aficionados.
