Ven diak

This place started off in the eighties as the Ven Diak (Old Student) Club, which was a disco with an infamous illuminated sign saying 'VD'. Then it tried to join the Americana theme bar craze and turned into the Sport Planet cafe for a year, but was fairly unsuccessful, so it has reverted to the tried and trusted formula.

The interior consists of practical wooden benches and tables, nothing fancy. The adjoining video games room is packed with noisy teenagers, so this is not the place for a romantic dinner although the pavement terrace is very comfortable and not too busy. Situated opposite the Law Faculty of Budapest's Elte University, it attracts an erudite student clientele.

The menu is a mix of Hungarian and American bar food. Goulash only costs HUF 350 - remember this is more soup than stew. Hot cheese balls (HUF 500) make another tempting starter. Chicken wings, fish fillets and salads are all HUF 600, while pasta costs between HUF 650 and HUF 900. Interesting desserts, such as a pancake souffle, cost between HUF 400 and HUF 600. A glass of house wine costs HUF 500 and a bottle costs from HUF 1200.
