Curry House (The)

2101 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB, Canada

Unlike a lot of Indian restaurants, The Curry House carries a full selection of Indian beers, including Maharaja, Usher's Pale Ale India and Laltoofan. They offer Indian foods lovingly prepared with the finest ingredients; they never use MSG and you can choose from mild, medium, hot or super hot dishes. Decorated in light-colored woods, the decor is warm, cozy and inviting. The aromas of the spices alone will make you want to return again and again.

  • Nothing.
  • Food, service, the stupid owner.

“The worst service ever. The owner is so mean to the clients and the food is horrible. I took my co workers out for lunch and I was so embarrassed as to how bad the service and experience is. The owner is extremely rude and actually picked a fight with me. I had to eventually leave after I paid the bill. I was about to call the police but I don't think my boss would have been to happy. I don't recommend this place to anyone. Also, I heard from another east Indian coworker that the guy (owner) actually checks the websites and fills in good reviews on his own restaurant. So be careful. This is the reason I am writing this.”

“I had the unfortunate experience of first visiting the curry house about 8 years ago with my then roommate. Both of us were looking for a fairly affordable lunch and maybe a couple of drinks. He over romanced a bottle of Indian beer when I tried to order a domestic one when we first arrived. I thought, wow! This guy is really passionate about this beer. He then continued his overly aggressive approach when we tried to order. If you consider yourself a fan or an expert on Indian cuisine prepare to be challenged and insulted! He also told us outright that we could not share anything on the menu (including side dishes). Everything is single serving! the final straw was when receiving our bill. That fantastic beer that he sold me on turned out to be 11 dollars! &bringing our fairly affordable lunch to around 50 dollars before the tip. I was left fuming and vowed never to go back. I unfortunately had to return last year for an office function and to my surprise, it was the same overbearing blowhard running the place! The experience was not only unsatisfying but uncomfortable for almost everyone at the table. Later, I was told by the two people who arrived first that they were greeted by a set of customers on their way out the door who warned them about the service. I decided that I needed to add this review when reading how others have had very similar experiences with the curry house. It amazes me that this place is still around. I guess overcharging your customers must make up for bad word of mouth. Believe me; this establishment does not deserve your business. If youre in the mood to be patronized and gouged enjoy!”

  • The owner was informative.
  • Didnt inform us that his food was shyte.

“Ordered take out; found the food over priced and barely edible. Simple, not good, never again. Doors should be closed for business. Naan was brutal, ordered garlic naan. Couldn't find any flavor of garlic on the hard naan. This was just awful. The owner was nice but the place was dead. I should have read some of these reviews before I tried the place. Disgusting! Sorry this is honest opinion the owner should seriously revamp his dishes and start from scratch.”

  • Helpful, knowledgeable server. A great introduction to Indian food.
  • Decor is quite ordinary.

“My 3 adult children and I went to The Curry House and had a wonderful time. The waiter (owner?) was very helpful in explaining the menu, as none of us have much experience in eating Indian food. Each of us was able to order something we loved, based on his information. We ended up ordering the Samosas for an appetizer and the mango ice cream for dessert, as we felt right at home right from the start and we were not in a hurry to leave. It felt like a family restaurant, serving good traditional food. The waiter was very respectful of my handicapped son. He spoke to my son directly and waited for his reply. In this busy city, that is very uncommon. We all decided we would visit again soon, bringing other family members. We loved it.”

  • Best curry dishes and oven baked samaras in Calgary.
  • Horrible decor!

“Best curry dishes and oven baked samaras in Calgary. Period. Quality of the meats is extraordinary. A tad pricey, but well worth it. Try one of the creamy kayo dishes if burning vandal isn't your thing. Typically you can get fresh chopped chili peppers to add spice to any dish by your own hand. Horrible decor left over from being a gondola pizza so the atmosphere is basically leftover 1970s with no updating.”

  • nothing.
  • Terrible place, service and food.

“The food is ridiculously over priced and bland. It was by far was not as good as Namaskar which is nearby. The man that owns the place was a complete jerk. And the portions are tiny. Do not go to this restaurant it is AWFUL!”

  • Absolutely nothing.
  • Bad food, horrible service.

“This was one of the worst dining experiences of my life! I love Indian food but the curry here was very bland. The waiter (owner) was extremely rude. My friend and I both ordered curry dishes with rice but we did not want to order nan since it cost extra and we just wanted a light lunch. The waiter was offended that we would order naan, since it's a "necessary" part of an Indian meal. I asked him if it was "necessary", why do we need to pay extra for naan as an option. He got angry about that, then told us that we should order some more expensive curries since the ones we selected were not the most flavorful ones. He was right; as I said earlier, they were extremely bland, even watery. He would not smile at us from the moment we entered, did not say a word when he delivered the food, and glared at us while we ate, paid and left. You could not pay me enough to go back there.”
