Schutzhaus zur Zukunftverlängerte Guntherstraße, (Kleingartenanlage auf der Schmelz), Vienna, AustriaAround 1900 "settler associations" (Kleingartenvereine) built small houses with tiny gardens in the Viennese worker's districts in order to offer sun, fresh air and some green to the poor urban population, which up to then was only used to dark downtown appartments. A rustic restaurant called "Schutzhaus" was usually established in the center of these small "villages." At present, the most popular of these schutzhouses is this pub, on a former imperial Austrian military excercise ground. The huge back room of the schutzhaus resembles a log cabin, offering space for about 1,000 guests who attend the regular events (be it a hard rock concert, Viennese folk music or a travesty show). Young men watch out: little old ladies might ask you for a dance when Horst Chmelar sings a Viennese original. The whole place looks like an alpine lodge; the beer garden is especially great. Food and drink are cheap and very local.
