Caffe Beano

1613 Ninth St SW, Calgary, AB, Canada

The funky James Bond artwork on the walls of the Beano is a refreshing change from typically sterile coffee shop decor. The cafe is divided into several sections of four or five tables arranged around a central coffee bar, so that instead of feeling like a bustling cafeteria, the atmosphere is that of a cozy, intimate restaurant. Over ten different coffee blends are served, including Sumatran, Brazilian and Swiss. There are also milkshakes, bagels, fruit pies and a number of baked goods and pastries. If you're looking for lunch, there are also a number of sandwiches featuring ingredients such as artichokes, goat cheese and meatloaf. The clientele is mostly comprised of professionals from downtown and businesspeople from the area. The large windows looking out onto trendy 17th Avenue make this an excellent location for people watching.

  • Good espresso, atmosphere, community.
  • More smiles needed, bit dirty.

“Caffe Beano did change hands a few months back and I must say for the better. With the dramatically improved espresso and brewed coffee (new machines) coupled with expanded space, a warm and atmosphere while still maintaining the funky and quirky character. Service a bit slow (could be demand versus capacity) and staff could learn to be more personable but a great place of community.”

  • I liked some of the art on the walls¿
  • Worst service ever with the coffee to match.

“Beano has recently been sold to new management (as of April 1, 2007) and is not living up to the Name it had established for itself prior. The service I received was the absolute worst. No "hello" or smile, just "what do you want?!¿ I used to be a regular, but I just don't feel welcome or comfortable there anymore. Cleanliness is no longer a priority at this establishment and neither are pleasantries. Coffee is comparable to the dispensing machines found in cafeterias. I guess new, does not always mean there will be improvement. Don't waste your time going to this establishment...”

  • Nothing.
  • Bad coffee, bad service, arrogant owners.

“I had heard from several business associates that Beano was the place to go for coffee while in Calgary and decided to give it a try when I was there in April 2007. After ordering my latte, which incidentally was lukewarm, weak, and just plain yucky, I sat at one of the tables and started to notice the state of this coffee shop. The floors were filthy, the servers handled money and then baked goods without hand washing, the amount of fruit flies in the shop was frightful, and there was a funny, garbage-like smell wafting from the back hallway. As I sat thinking, I was approached by two women informing me that they were the new owners of Beano. At first they seemed nice, but they proceeded to talk endlessly about themselves and how important they were to the business and the community. I was not the only one to be on the receiving end of their self-serving rants that day. I was disgusted by their pretentious ego-boosting behavior and decided to leave this bad experience behind me. It is my understanding that prior to the recent sale, Beano was established for over 14 years. I think an era of great coffee and service has ended with the sale of this business. ”
