Henry Africa's Hothouse

65 Whiteladies Road, Clifton, Bristol, United Kingdom

Let's get one thing clear straight away - there is absolutely no African connection here, either in the food, decor or theme. If anything it takes its inspiration from America and New Orleans lounge bars in particular - think canvas awnings, ceiling fans and deep sofas. It's slick, relatively sophisticated and attracts students, media-types from the BBC just down the road and professionals, getting especially packed at weekends with those wanting to live the high life. The restaurant upstairs (children are welcome from 5:30p-11p M-F and there is a special kid's menu) serves up an American and fusion menu - voodoo fishcakes, sesame-coated catfish fillet, nachos etc. - while the bar downstairs is famed for its fabulous cocktails, served with entertaining flourishes by the bar staff. They do serve the standard beers, spirits and wines as well, but honestly, why would you bother when you can have a Manhattan or a Seabreeze?

  • The food was lovely.
  • The service was a little poor.

“It was very hot inside and whilst the waiters/waitress' were generally polite, they didnt keep check on whether you wanted another drink, they took a long time to take our orders and they didnt ask if the food was ok. The description wasnt 100% clear on the dessert menu and the person I was with at the time is a celiac and the dessert came with a brownie. This was very difficult to explain to the manager who didnt seem to speak very clear English. Previously they had double booked our table also and didnt offer anything as a gesture of good will. Its nice but not for a romantic / special dinner for 2.”
