Charlie Gitto's Pasta House

207 North Sixth St, St. Louis, MO

Going to this Italian restaurant is like going to a photo museum of famous St. Louisians. All of the walls are practically covered by 8"x10" autographed photos of local celebrities. The restaurant lacks an Italian feel, but fits in with the downtown scheme as being a building preserved from the early 1900s.

Charlie Gitto's chefs like to experiment with traditional Italian recipes. For example, they throw in vegetables like mushrooms and olives for extra flavor. Some of the dishes include Spaghetti, Lasagna, Chicken Picata and American food with an Italian flavor.

“What a disaster! We had a waiter that was untrained and knew nothing at all about either Italian food, or what he was doing. The owners were off that night (Tuesdays. Beware!). We ordered calamari as an appetizer which I had there previously and it was the best I have had. This waiter first forgot the order, and then came back with the calamari and the meal at the same time. The calamari was a joke. Hard as a brick with some sort of cement breading with olives and raw onion tossed on top. My wife's fork sent the first piece launching across the room! You needed a nutcracker to eat this mess. We asked them to remove it. Then my dish was a rigatoni that supposedly had peas, ham and mushrooms in it. It was a totally overcooked mess that resembled day old mashed potatoes. At this point I called the manager and some Italian babe sauntered over and got indignant at our outrage over this disgusting food.”

  • Food was second to my mother's and the service was better.
  • A little crowded.

“This was the best part of my trip to STL. I grew up in Queens and I never thought in a million years that I'd find an Italian place in St. Louis that rivaled the ones from back home. What a pleasant surprise Charlie Gitto's was. Keep up the good work Charlie - you're A+ in my book.”
