Montrio's414 Calle Principal, (at the corner of Franklin Street), Monterey, CATel: 831 648 8880 • Web: Visit this site » The kitchen and rotisserie are completely open for all to see in this colorfully decorated bistro that combines American, Italian and French cuisines. The interior is fancy and sleek, but the attitude is very casual, which accounts for the wide-ranging clientele. It won Esquire's award for "best eatery of 1995" for plates such as Grilled Gulf Prawns over Caramelized Leek Risotto and Veal Cheeks over Mustard Whipped Potatoes. Beginning at around $20 for the house varietals, the impressive wine list includes some alternative whites and adventurous reds. The friendly service will bring you back many times.

“Every time I visit Monterey I try to have a bite at Montrio. The place has fabulous food and a lovely atmosphere. Voted Esquire's restaurant of the year for 1995 and #1 by locals many years running this place doesn't disappoint with their menu. They offer haute cuisine presented in an historic firehouse setting and nothing about this place disappoints. Fantastic food in a trendy yet cozy atmosphere. It is varied and often with a little twist on the dish. Click their menu page and see for yourself. Presentation is also done well no matter what you order. They have some cool selections of background music too. From select old school hits to some more modern popular songs. The most unique thing about Montrio is that is was built inside an old firehouse with glass doors on the front where the horse drawn carriages used to exit. They put in some unique cloud like noise dampening structure on the ceiling that adds something quirky to the atmosphere. The center divider between the bar & the dining area is a wine rack wall. Just great decor and great food! Also, Montrio is affordable considering what they serve. I have been to much pricier places in the area with an ocean view and the meal quality is no where what I get at Montrio. If you like wine, their list is quite extensive. They even have a dinner and a movie package for $19.95 pp. Happy hour starts at 4:30 and they offer a selection of small bites for $3 and $4 drinks.” Popular Restraurants in MontereyView all restaurants in Monterey
