Rum Boogie Cafe

Rum Boogie Cafe

182 Beale St, (at Third), Memphis, TN

This bar has wraparound windows that let you see the dancers bopping and jiving from the outside, or watch the street scene on Beale from the inside. Autographed guitars hang from the ceiling, offering proof that musicians such as Carl Perkins, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Walsh and others have hung out here. The house act, James Govan and the Boogie Blues Band, performs when there isn't a visiting artist. Shows usually go on from 9p-1a on Friday and Saturday, and from 8:30p-12:30a Sundays and weeknights. The kitchen serves several dinner and snack items, but the Rum Boogie is famous for its red beans and rice.

  • The band.
  • There is nothing negative about this place!

“I live in eastern Canada and often travel to southern California. Memphis is a long way out of the way on this trip but, I often detour (flying or driving) through Memphis just to go to the Rum Boogie Cafe. The band is the best house band I have ever seen and, is worth taking a few extra days to see. The food and service are good. The band is awesome. Just writing this (CD playing) makes me want to pack up and get to Memphis.”

  • HIGHLY recommend going there. Best fun on Beale St.
  • Nothing to dislike, it's all good!

“Heard only about this place. Went early, around 5, but not necessary, to make sure of having a seat at 8 for. Enjoyed seeing all the guitars and knowing all those artists played there. Food was great. I went for the catfish with a side of red beans/rice. My friend got the Memphis BBQ. Both were generous portions and excellent value.”

  • Great ambience with signature guitars hanging from the ceiling.
  • It is advertised as a cafe. It is definitely more than that.

“The ambience was cozy as well as historic. Coupled with the six piece rhythm and blues band, it was like stepping back into the past and reliving the blues era. Prices are most moderate and the service was excellent. Since this was our first official stop for our weekend in Memphis, it definitely set the tone for the rest of our tour. I had visited another restaurant on beale ST. Back in January, but it had served partially raw chicken wings. I wanted no more of that. I definitely made the right choice when I took my party to rum boogie cafe. The only criticism I have is this it is advertised as a cafe. Actually, it is much more than that. The small dance floor also was a treat for me and my daughter. We shall return!”
