Absolutely outstanding! Bring a date here and you will be a hero!
Not cheap, but hey, it's only money.
“This restaurant is, quite simply, one of the best dining experiences I have ever had. A co-worker and I received the recommendation from a taxi driver who said that one of his fares, a snooty New Yorker, grudgingly acknowledged that Acquerello was one of the few restaurants in the entire city of San Francisco that was passable. Let me tell you, passable doesn't even begin to describe Acquerello.
The food was excellent. We chose the Chef's Tasting Menu - five courses of pure heaven, paried with excellent wine selections. However, it was not as simple as just selecting the prix fixe menu. "Would you like to substitute another selection for one or more of the courses?" No problem. In fact, when we did make a few substitutions, they adjusted the wine pairings to match.
The service was outstanding. I needed to make a phone call right after ordering. As the call extended to 15 minutes, I expected the first course to be waiting for me when I returned. No sireee, not here. At Acquerello they waited until I returned before serving the first course, but not before providing my co-worker with an extra glass of the sparkling wine they had paired with the first course.
The ambiance was elegant, yet laid back. A party of 8 next to us also had a six month old baby in tow. Not a peep out of the baby throughout the entire 3 hour dinner. Even she was mesmerized by Acquerello. She was probably thinking, "I can hardly wait until I can eat solid food!"
My only regret is that my wife couldn't be with me to enjoy it. It might be worth a special trip back to San Francisco just to try it again. ”
