  • The food was very good, mostly.
  • Service too slow, no beans, instant tea.

“My sister, my brothers and I visited the restaurant on Aug 22, 2009 for lunch. The prices seemed rather high for lunch. Service was slow because our waitress was trying to service tables of 30, 18, and 12 patrons in addition to the 4 of us. We were disappointed that the restaurant has stopped serving a side of pinto beans. The filets are mostly breading and very little fish. The instant tea was awful. Real tea should be served, or none at all.”

  • Piping hot French fries and fish, good Cole slaw, tomato relish.
  • Powered ice tea, waitress too busy to bring refills, slow service, add pinto beans back to menu.

“We love catfish and David Beard's is one of the best in our estimate. We ordered the catfish fillets, which we realized wasn't a good choice, as it was mostly breading with little scraps of catfish. However, it was piping hot. The hush puppies were passable. The biggest disappointment was the instant ice tea. I don't expect to be served powered ice tea in a restaurant except the very cheapest. Since I would never drink it even in my home, I certainly don't want to pay restaurant prices for it. The cold slaw, French fries, and tomato relish were up to our expectations. The French fries were piping hot. The problem was that it advertises all you can eat. The waitress brought out tiny, little saucers of relish, cold slaw, and tartar sauce. A small platter of fish, French fries, and hush puppies and then disappeared. There were four adults in our party. She eventually reappeared after about 15 minutes and asked "is everything OK." We said no and she asked what we needed. Since every tiny little dish was empty, it should have been apparent what we needed. She did bring back another serving, but didn't refill our drinks. She apologized that she couldn't serve us in a timely manner because she was serving two large parties in a different area of the restaurant. We eventually just gave up and left. The one other thing that we would like is that they start serving the pinto beans again. They used to serve beans. This is something that we all miss.”

  • Our waitress was outstanding, maybe even too attentive.
  • Portion size.

“Being a local who has been to Idabel Catfish King many times, I would say that the restaurant has changed for the better over the years. Everyone knows about this restaurant. Being on a prominent junction of highways in Idabel is great. Locals even use the restaurant as a landmark for giving directions. The atmosphere is much improved over the old store. The decor is just about the best of any catfish restaurant I have ever visited. The fountain and stream outside are outstanding. We were seated pretty quickly this last visit and the waitress immediately took our drink order. She seemed to do her best to take care of us and was one of the best things about the whole visit a couple of weeks ago. She appeared to be working hard and was very pleasant and welcoming. The meal was provided in a relatively quick amount of time though it is not a fast food restaurant. The salad bar is one of the best in the whole county. It was reasonably well stocked, appeared fresh and tasty. The restaurant appears to be clean, reasonable place to eat. I really like the Cajun catfish recipe. I will say that they appear to be using a very meager portioning guide. If the menu says 3-4 pieces, you will only get 3. If the menu item says 5-6, you will only get 6 and so on. The pieces themselves look like they have been chopped into very small sizes to ration the portions. The portion size is the reason I marked down the overall value score. I am not a huge eater, but it just appears to take up a small area on the plate and not be generous portions. I wish there had been a middle answer for the question about being a good value for your money. Since it was either a yes or no proposition, I had to choose no due to portion size. Otherwise, I enjoy the Catfish King.”

  • Food is very good.
  • Service is unpardonably slow and poor.

“The food is very good and prices reasonable which has attracted me to Catfish King over the years. Recently, the service has deteriorated greatly, tonight drinks were bought to the table, the order was taken, and the waitress was not seen again until our meals came, 45 minutes later. She set down the meals and walked away, never looking at our glasses. We never saw her again. The wait of 45 minutes was for simple meals of 3 catfish pieces, a few French fried potatoes, and a scoop of Cole slaw, 2 corn bread hushpuppies, and a cup of baked beans. This is a very simple meal which should require noy more than 10 minutes to prepare, at the most. We were not the only ones upset with the service tonight.”

  • Good food.
  • Cleanliness and service.

“The Idabel store is a nice facility but the service is not adequate and the restaurant is dirty. The management does a poor job of keeping things clean and appetizing to the look.”
