  • Quaint restaurant, good looking, beautiful Lewiston.
  • Food quality poor to mediocre.

“This restaurant has many of the attributes of a fine dining place (old charming looks, etc.) but unfortunately it really suffers due to the poor quality of the food and it's preparation. My family and I have eaten here a few times, each time returning in the hope that it had gotten better, or that we'd just ordered the wrong dishes previously, or that the cook had a bad night when we had been there before! But alias no, each time has been equally dissapointing to the extent that we just don't bother even seriously considering going there to eat any more. This is such a shame because we live in Lewiston and it would be very convenient to have a decent restaurant close by, but we find ourselves continually heading south to Williamsville or Buffalo to get a decent quality steak or properly cooked fish. I live in hope that one day the owners of the Clarkson House will step up to the mark and purchase better starting materials, and employ kitchen staff that can really do the food justice. At the moment the best that can be said is that the building itself is attractive.”

  • The building is historic and very cool.
  • The food is overpriced and not very good.

“My husband's family went to the Clarkson house in Lewiston last night. There were fifteen of us, but we'd booked in advance and figured we'd get decent attention. When we showed up at 5, when the restaurant opens, the bar wasn't even ready to serve. We had to ask if we could get a few cocktails before dinner because the bartender didn't seem ready or interested in serving us. My husband ordered a drink with Bombay sapphire and was told that there was only enough for about one shot, but someone would run out for more if need be. He switched to another gin and figured they'd apologize at least, or offer a drink on the house, but that didn't happen. The service was slow. Drinks were not refilled. We had to ask three times for the same round of new drinks during the meal. The bread before the meal wasn't anything special and there wasn't enough to go around one time. The appetizers were a joke. $9 for two scallops, $6 for one portabella mushroom. What a rip off. The quality of the food wasn't good enough to merit the expensive prices. I don't mind paying if the food is going to be delicious or outstanding in any way, but this was mediocre stuff. I personally think the outback makes better steaks! our meals came out over the course of twenty minutes. Three or four people were served at a time and had to wait for the rest of us to be served. If a steak was ordered medium rare, it was medium well. If it was ordered medium well, it was rare. There was no consistency in the way the steaks were served why bother asking how we like it if you're not going to cook it that way? Another point of contention is that they would put one or two pieces of asparagus on top of (cheaper) green beans, to prop up the more expensive vegetable. What a joke! The menu was completely different from the website www.clarksonhouse.com which was a disappointment, because the website menu had better options and we'd based our decision to go there on that menu. Serving sizes were decent on some meals, but pitiful on others. For a restaurant that has been around for so long, we were extremely disappointed. To top it off, our dinner was for a 50th wedding anniversary and we felt that our choice in dining location was regrettable for such a special event. Diners are warned.”
