- Fabulous food and staff.
- A little expensive but in the end you get what you pay for!
“1859 Café is an extremely friendly restaurant, the Matradee greeted us upon our arrival but went over the top when another couple in our party, arriving from Charlotte NC, became lost in the Hickory Down town area, he literally drove to their location and had them follow him back to the restaurant, now that is service! The restaurant was charming, stylish, with a creative twist to its decorative ambiance. The area which the restaurant is located seemed a little sketchy but once inside 1859 Café is another world. We encountered two wonderful hours d'oeuvre. One of the very best Crab cakes I have tasted (this includes some great restaurants in Charleston). The stuffed portabella mushrooms were terrific, very tasty, and had a different spin, not the same old ingredients. Entrees were visually pleasing, and the taste was remarkable. We had the trout and filet and both meals were cooked to perfection with just the right amount of sauces to compliment the dishes. I can't say enough, this was a wonderful meal with wonderful associates to assist in the presentation.”

Backstreets Bar & Grill

- The lighting. It's dim, making it intimate, but bright enough to dine by.
- There isn't one in Shelby.
“Backstreets is one of THE best restaurants in Hickory. If you've never been, the lighting is similar to Carnaubas or Ad Vinci's (the Italian restaurant, not the sub place). I think, actually, that the lighting in this restaurant is what draws me to it. It's dim enough to make things intimate/romantic because there's no really bright light shining down on you, making you feel exposed. It isn't dim enough to make it hard to see your food, though. For me, this sells the restaurant. I wish more places would draw from Backstreets and do away with the bright lights. The food is remarkable. Though I've not had everything on the menu, I would feel comfortable ordering anything. So far I've not been let down. Their salads are fantastic. They always taste fresh. The wings are top-notch. If you haven't tried them, I highly suggest doing so.”
