Aj Spurs Saloon & Dining Hall
Feb 4, 2009 by Kathy from Arroyo Grande
Overall Rating: 7 User Rating Score: 7
Food:[6] • Service:[8] • Atmosphere:[9]

  • Service.
  • Food.

“recently visited the Templeton AJ Spurs and was somewhat disappointed. To start the soup came to the table luke warm. The salad was fine. And then came the entree, the steak was okay. The rice had a funny odor to it and the potatoes looked and tasted leftover. My husband had the calamari steak and said the texture was mushy not firm as it should be. We have been to AJ's in the past and have always left happy and full. But this visit left me wandering if we would go back again.”

Ian Mcphees Grill
Jul 9, 2005 by Tess from Paso Robles
Overall Rating: 7 User Rating Score: 7
Food:[7] • Service:[7] • Atmosphere:[7]

  • seasonal, fresh ingredients, good food.
  • wine markup high, walk ins not seated, despite open tables.

“Mcphees is a great restaurant, and could be a good value if you are not ordering wine with your meal. The wine markup is obnoxiously high. The menu is seasonal, only the freshest food available is used to create each dish. The salmon salad is very good, and so is the steak.”

Aj Spurs Saloon & Dining Hall
Jul 9, 2005 by Tess from Paso Robles
Overall Rating: 8 User Rating Score: 8
Food:[8] • Service:[8] • Atmosphere:[9]

  • Great food, huge portions, festive atmosphere, full bar, family fun.
  • Noisy, kids all over the place, long wait on weekends.

“AJ Spurs is a local favorite. I like to call the experience a "cowboy meal". It is one of those places that locals take their out of town visitors to, as it is a good way to see what North San Luis Obispo County is all about. On the weekends, expect to wait an hour or so in the bar. There are video games to keep the kids busy while you sip a huge martini (served in a ball jar). DON'T ORDER APPETIZERS, you will need all the extra room for the huge meal you are about to enjoy. Once you get seated, you wills start eating immediately. The menu offers the usual steaks, ribs, tri-tip. My personal favorites are the calamari steak, the Twin Peaks (twin filets mignon served two ways), and the carne asada (served with a cheese enchilada). All entrees (even the kids meals) are served with family -style starteres: vegetable beef soup, tequila beans, salsa, (I combine all three of these), a green salad, and accompaniments: rice pilaf, homestyle potatoes, garlic bread, and dessert: an after dinner liquor such as Irish cream, brandy, creme de cocoa or a rootbeer float. As you can see, it is an exhausting meal experience. We sometimes share an entree, and order an extra plate, it comes with the starters, sides and float for about $9 bucks, it's worth it.”
