• Felt that the room was a little on the small side. Also would have preferred more electrical points & cupboard space.

• The room was clean, the staff friendly and it had SKY.
• The room was a bit small.

• Clean, fairley modern and well organised
• Small downside was parking.Used secure parking with '5 overnight charge which seemed fair.

“Very central to the city and all main routes.I will certainly use again next visit to birmingham.Hotel staff very efficient and curteous,excellent value for '48 per night including breakfast.The '5 parking still makes it good value for a nights stay.”

• having to ask for toilet rolls. should have been checked before we went to the room

“Hotel was ok.
Quite a good location, short taxi journey to town centre. We were disappointed about the restaurant, we were told we didn't need to book a table, then when we went down to the restaurant at about 8.45pm it was shut and we were told we could eat in the bar. This was not the place for a quiet meal amidst the pool/snooker tables and groups of men drinking.
Breakfast was good but the tables were slow to be cleared.
But overall an okay stay”

• Hard to find, used to be called something else which all the locals still refer to it as.

“Reasonable room in a reasonable hotel for a reasonable price. Slightly further away from the town center than would have been liked. Staff were friendly and helpful.”

• Check in and out was very poor. Over complicated. I payed '5 for parking.

• Friendliness and efficiency of staff.
• Next door's room through adjoining door. Thin walls!!

“The best description of this hotel is cheap and cheerful, which is not a negative comment. In other words great value for '45. The staff we found to be excellent and the whilst the rooms are very small they were clean and perfectly adequate. Some of the hotel needed some attention as it was a little tired but it was fine and again clean, which is much more important.”

• I was disappointed by the general appearance and standard of the hotel.
• Doesn't offer room service, the room itself is basic with dated decor, and the lift must be the slowest in the UK.

“That the star rating is reflected in the quality and service offered by the hotel. Customers need to know what services are offered by the hotel (room service - and not takeaway leaflets) and a picture of the room would be useful in forming your judgement.”

“Clean room, very good value for money.

Very helpful friendly and informative staff - from the receptionist to the Chef! Couldn't have asked for better service.

Overall very pleased with the choice as we had seen a couple of reviews on-line that weren't very favourable.”

• the bar food was very good. stake and chips

“booking online your quote for the stay which was on a weekend was for
'40, checking out i was charged '49 and told because it was monday morning..... and the daily rate was '59 they where in fact knocking off a tenner. i'm not happy about that. your site has no pictures of the bar, reception area or rooms.”

• The check in and hotel staff were fabulous, polite, cheerful, helpful
• The rooms were very small, bathrooms were tiny and the showers full of mildew, rooms need upgrading

“I cannot reccomend the staff enough, food excellent, very quiet at night despite the hotel being full on the Sat night which was excellent.
The let down was the room, small, airless and damp smelling, bathrooms appeared dirty in the shower which was mildew in the tile grout.”

“This hotel is located in a quiet, rather run-down part of town with not many pubs/restaurants in a close vicinity. It is quite a distance from the shopping/entertainment area (approx 20 mins walk). Having said this, the hotel itself is well set out, and the bar comes highly recommended!”

• the check-out alarm wasn't very friendly,we thought it was a fire-alarm

“The hotel was situated in a very convinient location, and was reasonably easy to find from new st. The staff were v. friendly and welcoming, and the food was good. As we had heard before we stayed the rooms were quite noisy, but everyone seemed spaced out so not much of a problem.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and would definately stay there again.”

• The bed was comfortable and the room was clean, room service would have been an added benefit.
• No hairdryer

“Room service would have been of benfit, and the bar area was smokey, and had the feeling of being dirty, when in fact it wasnt. There may have been a non smoking room but I didnot investigate.

Everything I wanted to know was on the web site and when I phoned to clarify distance from my venue, the information and directions were excellent from your reception area. I have no complaints.”

• The traditional building - all the history of the first working man's hotel was superb.
• The big function on the Saturday night kind of overwhelmed the guests trying to eat in the bar. The bathroom fan was a little noisy.

“The staff were polite and courteous. The rooms seemed a little tatty - the fan in the bathroom was very noisy - but for the price it was superb value and an all-round good experience. Check out the history of this place - it was built in 1903 for working men to stay in for something like 10 shillings a night (less than ONE EURO!).”

• Good price, included good breakfast, near to centre of City. Tidy & clean
• Poor room sound insulation. TV reception unwatchable in our room.

“Rooms are small (double bed plus <50cm all around) so do not plan to spend time in the hotel room itself. It's suitable for a place to get ready for a night out and come back to and crash out. Close to town ('3.50 in private hite, '5 in a taxi) and included a good and varied fresh breakfast buffet. Room was tidy and clean and warm enough, bed comfortable. Shower reasonable and hot. Two sets of towels included. Only one powerpoint per room but kettle and tea/coffee included. Includes hanging space for clothers but no drawers.”

• Close to the city centre, the hotel was clean and it was good value.
• finding the accomodation!

“Several of our friends also stayed at the hotel, and we all had problems finding it. It would have been useful to have more detailed instructions on how to get to the hotel. Even by printing directions from the AA web site, we still managed to get lost.”

• fascinating building, central location, good public space decor, comfy bed, friendly staff
• kettle power lead didn't reach easily, bathroom grouting shabby, information on phone faded & illegible, unclear signage to breakfast & bar.

“I enjoyed my stay. The bar and restaurant were lovely - well decorated and pleasant. The hotel is extremely well placed for Birmingham city centre & good value for the location. I only had a brief chance to read about the history of the building in the lobby, but would have enjoyed this information being reproduced in the literature in my room.
My room was very compact - perfectly acceptable for a short stay, but too small for more than a few days. However it was clean, comfortable, had a wonderful view of the city centre and the Bull Ring and it contained everything I needed. I am relieved the lifts are being upgraded!”

• breakfast was a magnificant selection
• the double bed was rather small, it was more like a 4 foot bed than a 4'6

“the parking facilities were in an old warehouse and quite different to manouvre around, there was also a '5 parking fee which i was not told about before booking the hotel.
the ground floor of the reception is very spacious and quite elegant, but the bedrooms are on the small side, not really large enough to fit in a proper sized double bed.”

• The staff could not have been more pleasant and helpful, They were cheerful and extremely helpful.
• No bath, The room was noisy at night. (traffic)

“I would have liked to have known how far the hotel was from the town center and that it was not reccomended to take walks in the area at night.”

• Not much really, bed was comfortable. Staff were very nice.
• No chair in the room, room was too small for a double

“Having stayed in a superior double room in the Novotel for '60 - '65, I didnt think that the facilities of the room compared, especially when the price was '50. So for only '10 - '15 extra I'd rather stay in the Novotel, but at the moment its always booked up.”

• Clean and tidy. Ample free street parking. Good buffet breakfast.
• Shortage of toilet paper! It ran out. No spare supplied.

“A good weekend. Very helpful receptionists who booked taxis and restaurants for us. We visited the bar once and found it rather expensive, like most hotels. No bath in room but a good shower.
Very convenient for central Birmingham and the Balti Triangle - easy walks to both.
Huge hotel so quite a lot of walking inside.
Restaurant very busy at 9.30 a.m. on Sunday morning. Much better half an hour earlier!”

• The room was small, and unclean with the curtains hanging off the the curtain rails. The overall feeling was rundown.

• The value and the choice of room types, non smoking. Inclusive Breakfast was a major selling point.
• The size of the room.

“Hotel was pleasant but a little rough at the edges i.e. broken lift, flooded gents at the restraunt, torn carpets taped down and signs of vandalisim at the lifts. Staff were helpful and efficient. I would'nt recommend it without improvments, but would give it one more try myself.”

“had to ask about car parking facilities before booking online.however we were more than pleased to have the parking adjacent to hotel and be secure and manned by your own personnel.Nice room clean and tidy everthing worked ok apart from shower head on shower which can only be described as showering under a tap.”
