• Local to city.
• If staying for long period staff needs more training.

“Poor hotel bad reception issues staff not helpful at all a bar or restaurant standards at all food were ok rooms not to bad for the price just needs some good management.”

• Decent location.
• A hotel managed by amateurs. Stay clear.

“Definitely not recommendable. These are the reasons why: the good: 1) breakfast was alright. the bad: 1) had bad booking issues; 2) gave me a dirty, messy room; 3) some lights didn't work in the bedroom; 4) only 4 TV channels available; 5) phones were down several times, so I couldn't call nor receive calls (during my *business* trip); 6) very, very noisy fan in the toilet; 7) I came back one afternoon and my bedroom door was open (cleaning staff just forgot to close it); 8) I had to wait up to ten minutes, several times, for hot water to take a shower; 9) dreadful, dreadful mattress; 10) part of the staff was most unfriendly.”

• Breakfast was loverly.
• skid marks in toilet dirty cups and pillows and cold room.

“Great breakfast but poor room as very dirty toilet, dirty cups, all 4 pillows with huge horrible stains on them and the bed was right under the window and a bad draft was comming down on to our heads.”

• Staff were extremely helpful. Nothing was too much effort
• The bed was tired to the point of exhaustion. It was clean but uncomfortable. This was brought to the attention of staff

• Near to the main road, therefore easy for me to go to the city centre by bus.
• There no direct bus to the Villa Park, venue of the football match between England and Holland.

“I arrived at the hotel at 12.30pm, I have to mwait for 1 1/2 hours before I can check in. I suggest, be flexible with the time for check in, may be at 1.00pm.”

• Lift when reaching 3rd Floor very Noisy, complained to reception who said lift old!!!!!

“The room that I booked ie 128 is away from hagley road and very quiet. However, the lift when reching the third floor makes the whole hotel vibrate. Mentioned this to reception and there answer was its an old lift!! I think they should be made aware of this problem and try and get it sorted”

• the accomodation was clean, warm and adequate.
• the room needed refurbishment and was rather small compared to others of a similar standard.

“the service received in the restauarant was second to none. we would be prepared to return if these standards remain and put up with the room standard. A point worth knowing, if you are an orange mobile phone user, this hotel is a blind spot.”

• Freindly and relaxed, clean tidy.
• Radiator thermostat loose, hard to operate hence room too warm

“Radiator thermostat did not work properly (loose), hence too warm. Tv could do with a lower shelf by about 2ft. Loose tiles to roofspace (under renovation?)

Salad with meal a bit bland and ploughmans supper like, could do with better leaves etc and not pepper and Iceburg.”

• It was close to the party that I was attending
• Fixtures and fittings were dated and the plumbing had a mind of it's own.

“I would have liked to have known that the hotel was dated and in the need of a lick of paint. That the rooms were small this includes the double room that I was in (233).”

• The Breakfast was excellent and the accommodation good for the price
• Bedroom slightly small, but OK for sleeping

“The Hotel was clean and the staff were very friendly, the breakfast was excellent, only downside was room size, if you needed it for anything other than sleeping it was slightly small, but that's been over critical. I will use the hotel again.”

• Nice Hotel, good Room. Excellent breakfast Easy to get to Center of Birmingham by Bus.
• The neigbourrooms Maindoors very noisy, when closed.

“Nice, very nice. We think, it have been a good idea to view on your webside, how to get to he Hotel by bus or train from the Airport, and not only by car.”

• Helpfulness of staff. Restuarant facilities and food.
• A non smoking room in which a previous guest had smoked

“On arrival we were allocated room 126. On entering the room it reeked of cigarette smoke, even though there was a no smoking notice there. However the receptionist readily changed our room which we found pleasant and clean. It is hard to prevent guests from smoking in rooms and it is down to their ignorance and selfishness that our first room was so bad.”

• For an overnight stop only, clean and functional accomodation was required. This hotel provided it.
• Room temperature difficult to regulate. Sometimes too hot.

• Noisy, thin walls, disturbed by many other rooms TV's, toilets etc

“Generally good but the noise levels mean that I will not stay at The Portland hotel again. Shame, because everything else was fine.”

• It was cosy & nice. Just right for a person staying on their own in a big city

• Very clean, very friendly helpful staff, but room was far too hot
• The room, and hotel in general was far too hot, couldn't open bedroom window

• Comfortable bed with clean linen. En-suite. Tea/coffee, hairdryer, alarm clock facilities
• Slightly dated bathroom facilities.

“Easy to find. Ideal for visiting city centre and surrounding area, including University. Restaurant Manager goes out of his way to help and all staff very pleasant and helpful.”

• Fine, clean. Very high quality food - fillet steak and Sea Bass.
• Dated bathroom and cramped bedroom. The breakfast was not special, limited choice and obviously not the work of the Dinner Chef. Waterfall in the dining room at breakfast time, day One.

“Your deal was '5 per night less than the rack rate. It included a la carte dinner. I didn't expect the run of the menu, but was offered it. I only took a main course each night, but it would have cost '24 for the two meals. Total cost, two nights room and food '100. Saving '34.”
