Research User Reviews for Blair House (1-1 of 1)

“I was very disappointed by my stay at Blair house. In my opinion, the quality and upkeep of the rooms are not good enough to qualify for inclusion in select registry. But what was for me the most unpleasant part of the stay involved what I found to be a very upsetting experience with the inn's management. Upon our arrival, we were given a tour by the wife/owner. We were traveling with another couple, and when we were shown the dining room in which the multi course, $62 dollar a head Saturday dinner was to be served, she specifically assured me and the wife of the other couple we were traveling with that a particular table for four would be ours for that meal. We arrived well before the commencement time for the dinner and found that, despite a sign on our promised table that said "reserved," another group was sitting there. I relayed this to the husband/owner. I found his reaction extremely surprising. He asked me who had promised us the table, and I told him that it was his wife. He checked with his wife and reported back that she had no recollection of doing so. When I assured him that she had, he became very defensive and shot back in a loud and confrontational tone that I should "prove it." prove it? What was I supposed to have done gotten it in writing? Tape recorded the conversation? I had my friend with me who had been present when the table had been promised, and she also confirmed that his wife had in fact promised the table to us. He disregarded this, even though it seemed to answer his strange demand for "proof," and then dismissively offered to seat us at a distant table that wasn't even set for dinner. In my opinion, this alternative offer was interpreted by me as an effort on his part to be intentionally abusive and punitive; that other table was completely unsuitable for dining it was off by itself, in a corner, against a wall and beneath an opening that looked into the clattering kitchen. The proof that this table was recognized as completely unsuitable for dining was that it wasn't even set with a table cloth or place setting, i.e., the management knew that this table wasn't appropriate for dinner and hadn't planned to use it. So it seemed to me that he was trying to punish us for asking that they keep their promise by telling us to go sit in a corner. All in all, it may seem like a small thing, but it made me feel that the owner was calling me a liar, when in fact I believe that it was he and his wife who were mistaken, and that he was then trying to make me feel bad as a result. He did succeed in making me feel very bad. In my opinion, he should have politely told the group that had taken our table that they would need to relocate. If he lacked the courage for that, then he should at least have been sympathetic and understanding to my situation rather than making me feel awful about their mistake. I will say that we did stay for dinner (there was another table for 4 that had been set for dinner which, while inferior to the one we'd been promised, was better than the "punishment" table in the corner) and that the food was absolutely wonderful. But in my opinion, the philosophy of the inn's management is upside down and left me with a very negative and sad experience. I would never return to this bed and breakfast.” Hotel Representatives:
