• Gorgeous grounds, beautiful surroundings
• Base rooms are not too spectacular

“The Shiv Niwas palace is a very, very beautiful hotel where the Maharaja of Udaipur still resides. The palace grounds - except for the King's residential area - are open to the guests of the hotel round the clock, and includes the City Palace Museum. The staff is extremely cordial and helpful, and you get a good taste of what it must have felt like to be royalty in the India of old. I had originally planned on staying at the Taj Lake Palace hotel, but changed my mind after I heard that Lake Pinchola was virtually dried up. Good thing I changed my mind! The lake bed was pretty dry, and it turned out that the Shiv Niwas Palace was much better value for money.

The Udaipur market is right outside the hotel gates, which is very convenient. I spent three nights at this hotel, and didn't need to take any taxis or auto-rickshaws to get to all the interesting places. One word of advice - you could get lost pretty easily in the market area, since it's full of little gulleys and alleyways.”
