• poor parking facilities

“It was a pleasant stay
There did not seem to be enough staff around especially at the buffet
breakfast.Breakfast would be a better experience if the customer was
served his tea/coffee.
It would also be more reassuring if there were some Hotel staff”

• The location was great for the method of travel we used.
• The rooms could do with a bit of attention. We found the bathroom in need of some attention.

“We had a great weekend and liked the idea of the hotel being very central for all amenities. We did find at breakfast on our last morning (we arrived at 7AM when breakfast is first served) that the pots out to fill for your tea/coffee had not been emptie”

• Charming old well-located hotel, remarkably well preserved. Good restaurants, entertainment and diverse shoping nearby.
• Poorly renovated restaurant and fire-proofing doors could have been better done.

“A grand old hotel, well renovated, with most rooms (check a few before settling in) nicely decorated. There are several good restaurants within a few blocks walk, along the picturesque river front. There are also very good transportation links, diverse shopping, and a fine theater and film complex within short walking distances. The limited hotel parking was not a big problem -- city parking is close by, and not expensive, and we managed to find a free space at the hotel two nights out of a three day holiday weekend. The staff are young but friendly, helpful and fairly well trained.”

• Great location, clean rooms, quiet even though right next to the train station, great shower.
• Not of great significane, but limited tv stations and no ice machine.

“The hotel has old fashioned charm, but the condition of the room and bathroom has been updated, especially shower, which was great. Good english breakfast. Restaurant adjacent to the hotel was very good. Excellent location. Very nice staff, as is everyone we met in Scotland.”

• Convenience for city centre and visits to surrounding area; Ash restaurant excellent value
• Lack of car parking facilities; some external noise disturbance in early hours

“This is an excellent 3* hotel. It is convenient for all public transport (rail station next to hotel and bus station round the corner), gives easy access to all local sites of interest and is right in the centre of the city. The Ash restaurant is excellent value, rooms are clean and of adequate size for short stays.”

• Located in town centre,large bed,good facilities in room.
• Very poor parking,poor colour scheme and worn carpets.

“Friendly staff,could do with some customer care tuition. map and directions got us to inverness but never took us to academy street so better directions,please. really nice breakfast(haggis a nice touch)
Really good,large bath and bed so comfort is unbeatable. would love to stay again.”

• lovely Victorian railway hotel. Helpful friendly staff. Excellent location. Quiet. Spacious well appointed rooms.
• Ash restaurant and bar and the food etc served.

“The hotel is well placed by the railway station in the town centre. It is well appointed. It is a building of Victorian grandeur which mostly is well and sympathetically maintained. The exception is the Ash restaurant and bar where lunch, dinner and drinks are served. This is an attempt to create a modern venue. It is a cliche of 70s chic style, and while no doubt viewed highly by the owners and some customers it is wholly out of place in such a building. It looks like a cafeteria. The menu reads well but the food is poor. Even if one has dinner included in a 'Shop & Dine' package it is best avoided. It is fast food. Seating and tables are basic cafe style. The bar area is not comfortable. The only plus is that a selection of newspapers is available. Fortunately breakfast is served in the original dining room, and is good. Real porridge, good range of preserves etc. The beers served are keg only and only one bitter. There is only a limited selection of bottled beers. The wine list is poor. Even the whiskies are limited in range. The best place to sit is in the foyer where there are comfy seats. There are plenty of interesting pictures and prints, some original.Who are the target customers? The hotel is clearly unsure. There is an apparent wish to create a successful hotel, and a big effort is being made.”

• ITS WORTH GOING TO INVERNESS JUST TO USE THE SHOWERS IN THIS HOTEL

“ONLY A FEW PARKING SPACES HOWEVER REALLY CENTRAL,JUST 2 MINS AWAY FROM MAIN SHOPPING CENTRE (WHICH IS BETTER THAN ANY I HAVE BEEN TO IN EDINBURGH/DUNDEE/PERTH/ABERDEEN) AND WALK AWAY FROM GOOD SELSCTION OF PUBS AND RESTUARANTS. THE HOTEL ITSELF IS WELL PRESENTED AND CLEAN, ROOMS ARE OF GOOD SIZE AND THE SHOWER IS THE BEST I HAVE HAD IN UK!”

• nice spacious bedroom, beautifully furnished, nice public rooms and a sense of grandeur
• slow check-in, cold food served in restaurant, rather unhelpful staff

“I found The Highland Hotel to be of a very good standard, good value for money and I would certainly make a return visit. My only complaints would have to be regarding the slow check-in procedure and somewhat average quality of the food served in the Ash Restaurant - we arrived by overnight coach from England feeling very tired and weary but the receptionist made us wait until exactly 2.30pm before we could access our room even though our room was ready.”

• Fantastic staircase and lots of character. Breakfast was delicious!
• Shower leaked through the ceiling into the lobby below and blew electric. Not offered to change rooms, just not to take long showers.. Poor upkeep of decor, wallpaper peeling badly in rooms and so on.

“Looks lovely at first glance. Rooms all right, but expected better. Staff chatted between selves constantly - check in staff at reception especially bad. Also a problem in the bar.
Meal in hotel restaurant a big let down - expensive and not good. My partner and I each had two courses and was not impressed.
Hotel clean and functional, but from reviews expected better. Location excellent - right in the town centre. Very quiet and relaxing in the lounge area and very little noise considering it is next door to the train station. Beautiful from the outside too.”

“It was good apart from the staff not being as helpful as they could have been. When checking out i waited 30mins in a queue only to be told when i reached the queue that the credit card machine was out of order. It would have been prefereable to have put up a small sign or tell the people in the queue that they could only accept cash. Also one of the bar staff kept disapearing whilst serving me without even saying why or even i'll be back in a minute”

“The hotel was really nice, an old style highland hotel with tartan carpets! The staff were friendly and we got good complimentary deals for food and drink in the hotel. The breakfast was superb also. The hotel is right in the middle of inverness which was a bonus too.”

“The actual stay at the hotel & the service was excellant. THe only problem that we occurred was upon check in we were told that they did not have our booking as this was a surprise that I had arranged for my partner I was most embaressed. Luckily the hotel did have a room available for us and very kindly agreed to honour the rate that was given upon booking.”

• The rooms were nice,clean and quiet. The location is very central.
• Lack of parking (only twelve spaces provided free of charge outside the hotel). Interesting choice of food provided for the buffet brunch and buffet dinner though still enough choice.

“We booked a two night hogmanay break. The package and value for money was excellent. The itinary for hogmanay was well thought out. Walking down the grand staircase to the sound of a piper and being handed a glass of champagne made you feel special! The dinner was very good though not all of the courses were to everyones taste. The entertainment was just what you want from a 'Traditional Scottish Hogmanay'. The only thing that may have improved it would be a little instruction on how to do the celidh dances.
The brunch on 1st January was well timed (11.30-13.30) allowing a long lie in the morning but an option was also provided for earlier risers. The buffet brunch offered an interesting choice of food but there were plenty of options. The buffet dinner in the evening was a good idea as it was much less formal than the previous night. However, again the choice of food was interesting. A number of people were heard comlaning about what was on offer. No soup was offered as a starter and no chips, boiled, mashed or roast potatoes offered. Perhaps sticking to what people generally like and offering a couple of more interesting alternatives would be a better option. The entertainment that evening (a disco) was fine but I think a lot of people were too tired to be bothered with dancing after the night before!
On the 2nd January everything returned to normal at the hotel with breakfast being seved 7.30-9.30 and checkout by 10.30. It would have been good to finish the New Year break with a late breakfast(perhaps 9.30-11.30) and checkout time (12.00?).”

• good size rooms and very comfortable and clean

“we have stayed in the hotel quite a lot, mostly checked in under my fiance's name, however, we enjoy our stay every time. the week after christmas the fire alarm kept going off, once at 7 in the morning and no-one realy gave an explanation which got us worrying but this is the only problem and it would defenatly not put us off as we have stayed after that.”

• Receptionists were a little curt for Scotland.

“Please thank the staff of the Royal Highland on our behalf. We have spent 2.5 months working in Europe this year (2004) and staying in various hotels in France, Italy and Belgium as well as the UK, so our Inverness stay was based on a lot of recent experience of varying accommodation! It was most enjoyable and we would certainly consider a return at some time in the future.”

• It was right next to the railway stations and the bedroom was lovely

“My daughter and I travelled from Stirling to treat ourselves to an overnight stay and Christmas shopping. We were delighted with the hotel and the staff were very nice and the newly refurbished room and resturant were excellent.We will probably do it again next year and would definately book that hotel again .We had a wonderful meal and nice wine after we finished our shopping .”

• Good value for money, friendly and easy access to railway
• Shower had to be full on to obtain warm water, lesser settings reduced temp further

“Overall the hotel was excellent with an ambience to match, the staff were informative,courteous and friendly. Our accomodation was spacious ,in good decor and the tea & coffee making facillities were very generous.”

• Location is central. Handy for business and pleasure
• Very noisy in our room on Friday night with the disco below.

“In the main I enjoy staying at the Highland however this time I was disappointed
a) with the noise
b) with the fact that I requested a 6am call and breakfast tray to the room on Saturday. There was no call and no breakfast. I tried calling the porter but got no reply. He was at reception when we left and when I told him about this, he just said that our room was not on his list. He did not offer to make anything for us. I have written to the manager”

“The only question I would like to ask is that in the information package in the room it said that the Ash Bar would be open until 1amn the Friday evening,when in fact it closed at 12 midnight!!This should be addressed.”
