“Hotel has been recently renovated; rooms with modern decor. Bathroom/vanity area large, but toilet and shower room very small. Pool area and restaurant area is still under renovation. Staff was very friendly and allowed us to stay in the room for an additional $75 until 6pm.” Sep 1, 2009 by
Xander from Adelanto
“We just got back from our vacation at this wonderful hotel. Most breathtaking location! We exchanged our Harbor View at Orlando, FL Timeshare for a 9-day stay. Rooms were beautiful. Got a king bed 2 room suite at the Kilohana Tower and the view was mind-blowing! Kalapaki Bay looked awesome. Every morning when we wake up! We open the lanai doors to hear sound of the waves crashing at the shore at night was just mind-boggling. We can almost hear it still! The food though was mediocre. Especially the fare at Duke's (their breakfast was expensive at $15.00 per person yet so underwhelming, you'd get better food at Hometown Buffet here in the mainland). Aupaka Grill's sauteed Mahi-Mahi with Cajun Sauce was notable though! The best food we've had however, was not at any of the fancy schmancy tourist trap restaurants but at Garden BBQ and Chinese Restaurant on Rice Street (close to Kauai Museum). You can tell that it's good because the locals frequent it! Their Hong Kong style Crispy Chicken and their Roast Pork was divine! Try their stir-fry noodles with Char Siu Pork - warms your soul!” May 25, 2009 by
Dan from Aurora,Canada
“Great hotel the grounds were huge and beautiful. The pool was amazing, and having an immaculate beach onside was a real plus! The food at the poolside restaurant was very good, with prices reasonable by hotel standards.” May 21, 2009 by
Kay from Royal Oak,MI
“It was one of the worst bottom basement rooms possible (at least I hope this was the worst!), really pathetic since the hotel was only about 40% full at the time (I asked). Doesn't make me wasn't to stay at this hotel again ever. The room is definitely not a resort property room.” Apr 17, 2009 by
Jon from Meadow Vista,CA
“When we were checking out they charged us $11 a day for self parking. The staff was not very nice about it either. I do have to say that the hotel grounds and pool were beautiful.” Apr 6, 2009 by
Holly from Santa Barbara,CA
“Great location and hotel, aging a bit, but still in great shape.” Nov 6, 2008 by
“Nice hotel, great restaurants, beautiful pool by the beach. Parts of the hotel starting to show age and in need of renovation.” Sep 4, 2008 by
Joe from Cockeysville, MD
“The hotel's grounds are nothing short of amazing. Service is top notch. The beach and pool areas are spectacular. Our only complaint was the hotel's base non-view non-balcony views which were tiny and not up to the standards of the chain.” Aug 28, 2008 by
John from Sagamore Hills, OH
“Expect afternoon clouds. Beach is calm. Location is convenient. Proximity to airport not a problem. Surrounding area not particularly scenic. Overall, better hotel than Marriot in Poipu, but Poipu has better weather.” Jul 22, 2008 by
Eddie from Mokena, IL
“We had a standard room which meant there was no balcony and the room was very old (furniture looked more fit for a Budget Inn), small (less than half the size of their garden view room) and smelly. Also, this Marriott does nothing special/extra for its Platinum guests.” Jul 15, 2008 by
Geoff from Phoenix, AZ
“Great accommodations, but pricey.” May 22, 2008 by
Dan from Ottawa, ON CA
“The Marriott Kauai was fantastic, especially the price. The grounds are immaculate. The garden and pool area are amazing to watch, with hordes of koi (fish). The gym is reasonably sized and has a decent variety of machines. The pool area is magnificent with fountains. There is a nice poolside restaurant as well with a great menu. The beach is average but the lagoon setting means the water is pretty gentle. Rooms were a little old in style but clean and comfortable, and we didn't stay in our rooms except to sleep anyway. A nice perk was the free telephone calls from the room. Location in Lihue is nice with a 20 minute drive to Poipu, and a leisurely 1 hour drive to the westerly tip of the north shore area. Lihue also has a nice set of supermarkets and drugstores and nearby restaurants so that you're not stuck in the tourist trap of Poipu. Its also conveniently next to the airport (not noisy) with a shuttle available to take you there and back. Overall, this was one of our favorite places to stay in the Hawaiian islands. The pool and gardens area of the hotel stand out as exceeding our expectations. Great service as well, as the concierge provided a few tips on great local restaurants, which turned out to be quite good.” May 21, 2008 by
Heather from Downey, CA
“Would definitely stay again. The grounds are amazing and the location can't be beat!” May 21, 2008 by
Ali from Atlanta, GA
“We really enjoyed our stay overall. The pool and beach are great and there are a couple of great places to eat on-site. The rooms were very clean and all appliances worked. We would definitely stay here again.” May 19, 2008 by
Claudia from New York, NY
“The hotel was enormous. Our room was very far away from the restaurant and amenities. The pool was very nice, but our room left something to be desired.” May 14, 2008 by
Kristy from San Francisco, CA
“This hotel's location is not ideal for a visit to Kauai. The beach is not so pretty and the surrounding town - stores, restaurants are not fun to explore. Kauai is magical and beautiful - the Marriott hotel is not.” May 12, 2008 by
Nanette from Fullerton, CA
“Large sprawling property with beautiful landscaping and outstanding beach area. Staff is very friendly. The rooms, however, leave a lot to be desired. Bedrooms and bathrooms need total upgrading. Bedroom still has popcorn ceilings. Bathrooms very small with old, old tile, etc.” May 8, 2008 by
Thomas from Nrh, TX
“We got the rooms that layover, flight crews get. Then when I upgraded I had to raise to get a decent room even then.” Apr 13, 2008 by
Sue from Salem, OR
“We didn't know that there was not going to be a lanai for our room and requested an upgrade and the staff became very rude and said we were not entitled to an upgrade. Also, when we checked out my husband brought our car around to the front of the hotel, we loaded our luggage and left, and not once did any of the bellhops ask if we needed help, did we have a nice stay or anything. Not one word to us.” Apr 3, 2008 by
Cindy from Daly City, CA
“I am used to getting upgrades for free but this hotel charges $80 for an upgrade, in addition, I asked for 2 beds and they ran out of beds that night so my guest had to use an airbed because they were also out of rollaway. We asked for any available view and they said they could only do it for an $80 fee so we decided to just stick with the no view room which gave us a view of the building rooftop.” Mar 31, 2008 by
Ginny from Glen Ellen, CA
“After coming from a secluded cove in north Kauai, this was so crowded. The staff was great except for the reception staff that had some abrupt women. The grounds were beautiful but the beach was typical and disappointing. Could have been more tropical by the beach and less hard under the feet. The lobby was so hard to find once we checked in.” Mar 24, 2008 by
Larry S. from Anthem, AZ
“They wanted $160 to upgrade, treated like 2nd class.” Mar 18, 2008 by
Shannon from Rochester Hills, MI
“As we were there for our honeymoon, this hotel put us in a SMALL, non updated room with 2 twin beds! And I even called the week prior to our arrival date to make sure they understood we were there on our honeymoon and requested a king size bed. Then they wanted to charge us more money to put us in a room with a king bed because they had no rooms available in the category that we purchased in. They were rude and not accommodating at all.” Mar 17, 2008 by
Chad from Spanish Fork, UT
“The grounds are amazing. They gave us a room with a view of the air conditioner units. Windows would not open. We had reserved a single king room but were given two double beds. When we asked to change we were told no we would have to make due.” Mar 12, 2008 by
Angela from Cottage Grove, MN
“The hotel was beautiful!” Mar 10, 2008 by
Kari from Wheeling, IL
“Overall, this hotel was very nice. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The grounds had birds and fish and beautiful plants. The only downside was the room itself. Okay we aren't the type to be in the room a ton but it looked like it came out of 1980. It was at the back of the house facing the garbage and exhaust pipes and had no lanai at all. Not having a lanai at all was a bit of a downer.” Feb 27, 2008 by
Mike from Los Angeles, CA
“Upon arrival, I did not get a king bed as requested, and it was our honeymoon. The hotel was oversold, and they would not upgrade us even though they made the mistakes. The hotel front desk tried to downgrade me to a non-view room initially, even though I paid for a pool view, and thought I wouldn't notice. I had to call for everyday for the first 3 days until finally they changed our room to a king bed, and the manager was not accommodating. Very frustrating.” Feb 23, 2008 by
Diana from Gig Harbor, WA
“This hotel is great. The hotel grounds are amazing. The pool is very large and the beach is right in front. I highly recommend having a beach massage. I would return to this hotel again.” Feb 19, 2008 by
Matt from Fox Point, WI
“Hotel was very nice; however, we were not pleased with the room. Was a room with no view or no balcony--it faced the back of the building. Not very exciting or romantic for a hotel in Hawaii. We would have rather paid a similar price for a room with a good view or balcony at a lower star quality.” Feb 18, 2008 by
Terry from Phoenixville, PA
“A very nice Marriott Resort with excellent accommodations.” Feb 16, 2008 by
Carla from Bella Vista, AR
“Beautiful hotel and setting. Love Duke's restaurant. Part of golf course closed due to construction. Also construction on parking requires valet or using shuttle. Hotel charges a daily parking fee.” Feb 14, 2008 by
Andrew from Sunnyvale, CA
“Hotel has very nice grounds and great pool (although a bit too shallow (at most 4ft deep). The quality of room will depend on the room type. The rooms with ocean and pool views are decent. The room w/o a view is very old and hasnt been renovated in awhile. The Italian cafe, Cafe Portofino, near the resort is also really good.” Feb 13, 2008 by
Michelle from Albuquerque, NM
“The resort is located near the airport but this was not a problem as we only once hear any plane nice The room we were initially given was not very nice. It was small and the bathroom was tiny. The windows looked out on to a concrete wall. We discovered a lot of ants in our room when we checked in and instead of offering to move us, they had someone come spray. The room then smelled terribly so I went to the front desk to ask for a different room. They moved us but said we would have to move back to the original room the next day b/c they were full. Our second room was a garden view (really viewed the back maintenance area) and was much nicer. It was roomier and the bathroom was very nice. The second day, we had a bell man pick-up our bags since we were told we couldn't stay in that room. When we got back that evening to get ready to attend a luau, we went to the front desk to get keys to our room for the night and they gave us the room we had had the night before, so we didn't need to use the bell man after all. The only problem was that it then took 1 1/2 hrs to get our bags. Overall, whenever I called them about a problem, they said they were busy and were not very apologetic. The couple days there were stressful at times due to the way the hotel handled things. I was not impressed overall.” Feb 8, 2008 by
Brian from Wayne, NJ
“It was nice, but not 5 star! We arrived late and could NOT get a bottle of water anywhere, vending machines were empty! ALL OF THEM and this was a resort? The staff tried to be helpful but they just didn't know there own hotel. IE: our room had internet, they didn't know. I had to search for the outlet. They do laundry, front desk did not know this. Rooms were cleaned ONCE, unless we paid extra to have this done. The pool is NOT heated! Ice cold. Little things like that nice hotel, just not for those that like to be pampered.” Feb 8, 2008 by
Kurtis from Billings, MT
“The Marriot is a beautiful place! We had the cheapest room in the hotel, but it was still luxurious. Staff are friendly. Nice restaurants on premises. Quiet. Lush gardens are in all open areas. Even though we were there in February, the huge pool seemed to be fairly pleasant. The beach is nice because it is, for the most part, private. The water is safe for everyone, 100 yards out and it's only chest deep, perfect for those who are a little nervous about being in the ocean.” Feb 2, 2008 by
Jo from Torrance, CA
“The hotel itself is very nice. This is a bit deceiving because there is no such room indicated on the hotel website so we are led to believe all rooms have balconies. The property itself is great though.” Jan 23, 2008 by
Michael from Glendale, AZ
“Beautiful property great housekeeping staff, valet staff member was very rude on a daily basis, was very disappointed by the room we were giving and everything on property was an up-sale were other Marriott it was complementary.” Jan 19, 2008 by
Robert from Moorpark, CA
“These people are crooks. Stuck us in the dungeon. Were willing to move us for an extra $350. I will never visit another Marriott as long as I live. All they care about is how much money they can steal from you.” Jan 5, 2008 by
Craig from Carthage, NY
“Our first two nights we had a garden view in a newer wing, but on our second visit we were given a standard room in the oldest tower. The difference was practically night (2star) and day. The kopi pool and daily AM feeding was great. As was the clover-shaped pool, BBQ-grills available, and the on-site Duke's Restaurant. If you have dinner at Duke's before 9pm, not only will you have phenomenal food, but their small Hawaiian trio will come over to your table and play your own request Beach is great, but we noticed a lot of locals (mostly teenagers) sneaking into the pool and Jacuzzi. Overall great hotel!” 1 of 1 people found this review helpful.Dec 31, 2007 by

“Grounds are beautiful. Rooms smelled of mold. could not sleep with the strong smell. Also, our bathroom was very dirty. Seems it wasn't cleaned between guests.” Dec 15, 2007 by
Scott from Provo, UT
“Amazing hotel with all of the amenities.” Dec 15, 2007 by
Erich from Seattle, WA
“When you stay at the Marriott Kauai you know you're staying at a resort that was built long ago. The grounds are sprawling and just what we had in mind for a Hawaiian resort. But, the pervasive salmon coloring is a bit much. The bathrooms all need to be updated; the shower was cramped and dark, the counter was about knee high, and there was mold on the bathroom ceiling. The resort has about 4 restaurants on site, none were that remarkable. All told not awful, but if you don't mind being further from the airport, Id try someplace else.” Dec 2, 2007 by
James from Carson, CA
“It wasn't in the best shape with very small room and bathroom. Something you would expect in a 3 star hotel, not a resort. Maybe if we paid their higher rates, our room would have been better. Otherwise, the facility was top notch. Pricey restaurants were expected for a resort.” Oct 17, 2007 by
Carol from Marion, IA
“We love this hotel as this is the 4th time we stayed here. The pool is great and the location on Kalapaki bay is great. The beach is nice and the water is great for kids. It is nice that they offer the "linger longer" program which lets you stay, for a fee, in the room until 6 p.m. which is great for those late night flights from the island. That is particularly nice.” Sep 20, 2007 by
Nissa from Monrovia, CA
“The hotel grounds are immaculately maintained and the staff is extremely helpful and friendly. The pool is absolutely beautiful and there is convenient beach access.” Sep 5, 2007 by
Henry from Pittsburg, CA
“Other than the ocean view rooms on the upper floors (which you would pay a hefty premium for), the rest of the hotel was unacceptably dark, dingy, and very noisy. We had a miserable night's rest full of banging pipes, whistling ventilation, and other unidentifiable noises.” Sep 5, 2007 by
Doug from Hoboken, NJ
“The hotel had a nice pool area but was in need of an update. The staff was extremely slow and rude at times. We stayed in a room that looked directly at the air conditioning units and were woken up to people working on the vents. We pay additional fees to upgrade but the new room smelled like mold. I would never stay at this hotel again.” Aug 29, 2007 by
Jeff from Florence, NJ
“This was in a good location. A resort setting close by to the airport. It was quick to get out of the hotel. They have both self and valet parking. Self Parking was quite a walk but they do offer a shuttle service which is a surprise since the shuttle is operated by the same people who does the valet parking. The grounds are vell well kept and you'll see people working every day on the grounds.” Jul 16, 2007 by
Fei from Bethel, CT
“Hotel facilities were average, not resort quality. My room was a major disappointment. Also bathroom was tiny, vanity/sink was extremely tight and child height. Would not recommend based on price for value. Asked twice for a better room but was told that a standard room was the only one available based on my purchased price.” Jun 9, 2007 by
Neil from Rancho Palos Verdes, CA
“This could be one great resort hotel. But service was so slow it detracted from the friendliness and other qualities of the hotel. Waiting over two hours for our luggage was the worst. But everything was slow: car valet, concierge, etc. All did good jobs. But at their own pace.”
