• Good pool, grounds, and beach access.
• Maid service was poor.

“Older hotel at the start of the Kihei strip. It has beautiful grounds and swimming pool. The beach has easy access for either the hotels private area or the public beach, your choice. This is an older hotel that could use a little work on the windows, but over all was clean and comfy. The location is great for those wanting to have a central location to access the all parts of Maui. We stayed 4 nights with few problems. The up stairs neighbors could be heard jumping on the beds and one day the maid took all the towels (even the clean ones) leaving us with none. We had to make several phone calls to the front desk over several hours. Other wise the staff was friendly and very helpful.”

“Could easily hear your neighbors, after looking into 8 rooms we finally found one that did not smell like mold and urine. Beds uncomfortable. Staff pleasant. Pool cloudy. Other guests there had the same impression.”

“While they tried to make the room look good everything is really old and falling apart. Flooring is coming up, air conditioner old and leaked, entry way falling apart.”

• The 3rd night we upgraded to an ocean view room, this was the start of the vacation.
• The initial room was in the old, non upgrade room and was not to our standards. We upgraded 3 days later and the ocean view was great.

“I would not suggest the "normal room" for an extended stay. We were fortunate to have a upgraded room for $25 extra charge after the 3rd night. Otherwise the vacation to Maui would have been a bust.”

• Difficult to get to restaurants/shopping without a car.

“The Aston Maui Lu was comfortable and clean, though the bathroom was older and could use some remodeling. The staff was very friendly. We only stayed for two nights on Maui before taking the ferry to Lanai for the rest of the week, so we weren't in the room very much. Our stay was pleasant and we had a great time in Hawaii!”

• Felt like it was a cheap hotel.

“While the price may be right for a hotel on the beach, it was more than I would pay after seeing the hotel and the water in front of the hotel. The water was not clean enough to swim or snorkle in. The hotel room was fairly clean, but did not feel like it was clean. It felt like a motel 6.”

• The open area amongst the buildings was beautiful.
• The showerheads are really short, they are adequate for those 5'9 and under.

“The hotel grounds are quite nice, the rooms are spacious. The staff was helpful and the rooms clean. Some rooms have older window unit a/c, but they still have no trouble keeping the room cool.”

• The grounds were beautiful with the flowers and trees.
• The room's carpet was very dirty, bathroom fixtures very old and unappealing, the locks on doors not very secure.

“The minute you opened the door you knew you were in trouble. I think the maid does what he/she can, but the carpet is so soiled, floors so old and dirt all around the edge of rooms, the bathroom fixtures were old and gave the sense of being unclean (although, I believe the maid had cleaned them). Couldn't wait to get out of there the next day!”

• Beachfront location with beaches.
• Carpet was stained, walls needed upkeep parking on ocean side extremely tight.

“Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Beautiful grounds. If you are looking for a quiet place to sleep at night or a secluded beach to read a good book then you won't be disappointed. However if you don't want to drive to a swimming beach, or if you are interested in eating out, then you may want to pass this hotel. The rooms are older, clean but at first glance don't appear to be so, and the whole resort could use some freshening up.”

• This hotel needs a paint job and new carpet.

“This hotel met my expectations. It was conveniently located and not too costly and available with little notice. The view was nice, as each room has a view of the ocean, however, the carpet needs replacing and room needs painting or updates.”

“The people who bash this hotel and the ones that enjoy "mango scented towels". We basically slept and showered at the hotel and sure it is an old property, but you get what you pay for and it met our needs. You could see/hear the crashing waves from our room the entire time we were there. We would return to this property.”

• There are ants in the room and the rooms are super dark.

“It was budget; you get what you pay for. The pool is nice but the whole place is super outdated. The bath room was really old and gross. Door not sealed so ants where everywhere. If you don't have a car the location is bad because there is nothing close by. Found the staff really nice and helpful.”

“Nice location, after all it is Maui, great pool tennis courts, lots of land, every room had a deck. Rules are not good, rooms need basic repair but they try. Staff could be friendlier single guy its fine might stay again, a family they'll be some fighting.”

• Need repairs and renovation.

“This is a no thrill place for you to sleep and take shower. Our trip was for my son's swimming competition therefore the room serves its purpose. We leave early in the morning and return in the evening therefore it was not important for us to have a nice room. As far as the classification, this hotel is not a resort. Rooms need to be renovated (carpet old). Bath room tiles needs to be replaced.”

• Excellent service and very friendly.
• Furniture, paint, etc show wear. Beachfront is also road front.

“Overall a nice place that needs some work. Peeling paint, sagging cushions on room furniture, and stained carpets and drapes need to be replaced. Replacing the windows with ones that shut properly would help with road noise at the beachfront rooms, which are sandwiched between the road and the beach. Staff was very friendly and helpful, and the grounds are a great playground. Not much nearby for food or entertainment, so plan on getting in the car. This is a great choice for those on a budget who don't mind a little deferred maintenance. If you expect shiny new and squeaky clean you will be disappointed, but you can still have a great time on Maui at the Maui LU.”

“This is an old hotel and rooms reflect this. Housekeeping needs to pay better attention to detail such as sticky tables, holes in sheets and blanket and responding to requests. Scheduled pest control spraying forced us to leave room by 10:30. I would not recommend staying here more than 2 nights.”

• Good value, excellent location, friendly staff, excellent ocean views.
• Tired rooms, no internet in room or public spaces, insufficient parking close to room.

“Hotel is a good value for a business traveler who is mainly looking for a fairly clean room, a comfortable bed and a shower. This is not a 4 star resort. Location is quiet and resort is nestled between mid level ocean front time shares. I would definitely recommend to others who need a home base from which to explore the rest of the island. The Maui lu is not a resort destination in and of itself.”

“A spacious beautiful setting, old Hawaii hotel. Sadly due to its pending demolition, management has neglected to keep it in clean and reasonably decent shape. Fine for the unfussy budget traveler, the single male like myself but would not recommend this for a honeymoon trip!”

• The hotel grounds were decent. Has a lot of potential.
• The room was disgusting. I had to ask for a new room the 2nd night, but it was still gross.

“This hotel needs a major renovation. It has a lot of potential, as far as the location and grounds. The rooms were disgusting-carpets, paint, and especially the bathroom. I had to ask if there was another room available, but it was hardly better. It was way too overpriced for how gross it was.”

• The staffs were very helpful and friendly.
• This hotel needs to be torn down and rebuilt from the ground up!

“Don't even consider this one! Although the staffs were all very friendly and helpful, there is no making up for the very poor condition of the building. I was not surprised to see a similar building there condemned! The grounds were so very spacious which can accommodate more than enough land to start building a new facility as remodeling the current one would obviously be more expensive, and Im a nurse, not a building contractor! In this room you will be greeted by a strong, foul odor, find a rusted wall air-conditioner, termite ravished painted walls, filthy flooring on which i insisted the boys wear their slippers at all times, non-functional knob locks replaced by just a chain lock, no electrical socket in the bathroom, thin, old towels. I can't write anymore as it brings back big time regret! Looks very inviting from the outside, but very, very disappointing, and this is coming from me, a bargain hunter who understands that we stay in hotels mainly just to shower and sleep.”

• Large rooms, quiet, spacious grounds, no frills.
• Owners keep threatening to tear it down and build something much fancier/more expensive.

“It has seen better days and renovations are not at all likely, but it is spacious inside and out. Plenty of parking, big pool, flowers and birds everywhere, and away from highway noise. Walking distance to a fantastic Korean/sushi restaurant, and an easy drive to other beaches. More expensive Oceanside rooms are on a small beach, but also on highway; I don't know if traffic noise can be heard. Ignore the tired carpets and older bathrooms, and gloat over how much money you have saved when you talk to other folks in their high-priced high-rise tiny units nearby. I would rather spend my money doing other stuff on Maui.”

“This hotel is right across the street from a beach and very near restaurants and shopping. The air conditioners were great because it is very warm in kihei and the beds were very comfortable. The hotel staff was terrific from porter to maid to front desk. The hotel was also very quiet. The ambience was like an olden Days hotel.”

“This is an older hotel. The room was frayed, and not just around the edges. However, the location of the room we got, 30 feet away from the Pacific on the 2nd floor, was excellent, and made it a great deal. It is certainly not spotless and shiny however, but dusty and faded. But if all you want is ocean, and you get lucky with the room, it could be a great deal.”

• They didn't change the sheets but once during my two week stay.

“It actually exceeded my expectations. The grounds were large and spacious and the pool was awesome! The beach was easily accessible and the staff very accommodating.”

“For the location and price this property cannot be beat. Right on the ocean is one section and across South Kihei road is the garden and Mtn view rooms. It is older but the A/C works, the staff was very friendly, it was quiet and it suited my needs 100%. The rooms have refrigerators but no microwaves.”

• The property is poorly maintained and needs a massive overhaul. The rooms need to be gutted and completely refitted.

“The hotel was well marked and easy to find. Arriving at night, the open air lobby was pleasant, check in was easy and I got great directions to shopping and dining. Outdoor lighting is poorly designed, so it was a bit difficult to find my room. The room was horrible. Smelled and looked worn and dirty. The carpet was stained, all the finishes worn out, the bathroom finishes were all worn and chipped, the window air conditioner was noisy and barely worked, something was wrong with the television volume, a problem since the ac was so loud. I have never seen hotel walls painted such an ugly yellow. At least the sheets appeared clean and the refrigerator worked. This room was so disgusting that if I had not been traveling for 20 hours and it was earlier than 9:00 pm I would definitely have looked for other accommodations. The Aston Maui Lu does not merit a three star rating. I would not have been happy with this hotel at any price.”

• Swimming pool, quiet area, refrigerator in room, location convenient to both Kihei town/Piilani, and friendly staff.
• Curtain did not close all the way, lighting too dim, door was hard to lock, floor in bath needs upgrading, and lobby needs more fans in summer.

“Always wanted to stay at Maui Lu. Overall experience was good, but facility is older, and bathroom flooring needs new look. Peaceful, laid-back. Enjoyed my stay. That was much appreciated.”

• Large expanse of rolling lawn accented by palms and flowers. Easy access to beach.
• Limited parking in oceanfront units. Long walk to rooms in non-oceanfront units.

“The Maui Lu is old time Hawaii. Relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The hotel reception building stands out from the road, atop a beautiful lawn hill studded with tall palm trees, and accented with lush tropical landscaping. The staff was eager to help and met requests with Aloha.”

• Great location, spacious room (one of the best rooms available).
• Quite small parking lot.

“Great location at the north end of Kihei, Maui. Ocean front rooms (or actually suites) are large and the view is gorgeous. There is also a small beach in front of the hotel. Staff was friendly and helpful. Overall a great experience and very recommendable.”
