Ralpf from Waianae, HI
“Nice location, after all it is Maui, great pool tennis courts, lots of land, every room had a deck. Rules are not good, rooms need basic repair but they try. Staff could be friendlier single guy its fine might stay again, a family they'll be some fighting.” Dec 20, 2007 by
Irwan from Mililani, HI
“Good value for a place to sleep. Not in walking distance to shops and restaurants.” Dec 20, 2007 by
Lulu from Honolulu, HI
“This is a no thrill place for you to sleep and take shower. Our trip was for my son's swimming competition therefore the room serves its purpose. We leave early in the morning and return in the evening therefore it was not important for us to have a nice room. As far as the classification, this hotel is not a resort. Rooms need to be renovated (carpet old). Bath room tiles needs to be replaced.” Dec 15, 2007 by
David from Victoria, BC CA
“Overall a nice place that needs some work. Peeling paint, sagging cushions on room furniture, and stained carpets and drapes need to be replaced. Replacing the windows with ones that shut properly would help with road noise at the beachfront rooms, which are sandwiched between the road and the beach. Staff was very friendly and helpful, and the grounds are a great playground. Not much nearby for food or entertainment, so plan on getting in the car. This is a great choice for those on a budget who don't mind a little deferred maintenance. If you expect shiny new and squeaky clean you will be disappointed, but you can still have a great time on Maui at the Maui LU.” Dec 13, 2007 by
Anurag from Herndon, VA
“I would never recommend this hotel to anybody. It's poorly maintained and has poor sanitary conditions.” Dec 1, 2007 by
Josie from Mesa, AZ
“This is an old hotel and rooms reflect this. Housekeeping needs to pay better attention to detail such as sticky tables, holes in sheets and blanket and responding to requests. Scheduled pest control spraying forced us to leave room by 10:30. I would not recommend staying here more than 2 nights.” Nov 30, 2007 by
Linda from Victor, NY
“It was kind of old and in need of updating, but we got a good night's rest.” Nov 22, 2007 by
Tom from Albemarle, NC
“Excellent hotel as a central base for exploring Maui. Rooms are plain but clean a spacious. Great value.” Nov 2, 2007 by
Spencer from Lafayette, CA
“Hotel is a good value for a business traveler who is mainly looking for a fairly clean room, a comfortable bed and a shower. This is not a 4 star resort. Location is quiet and resort is nestled between mid level ocean front time shares. I would definitely recommend to others who need a home base from which to explore the rest of the island. The Maui lu is not a resort destination in and of itself.” Oct 27, 2007 by
Gary from Ca, CA
“A spacious beautiful setting, old Hawaii hotel. Sadly due to its pending demolition, management has neglected to keep it in clean and reasonably decent shape. Fine for the unfussy budget traveler, the single male like myself but would not recommend this for a honeymoon trip!” Oct 19, 2007 by
Kristina from Tahoe City, CA
“This hotel needs a major renovation. It has a lot of potential, as far as the location and grounds. The rooms were disgusting-carpets, paint, and especially the bathroom. I had to ask if there was another room available, but it was hardly better. It was way too overpriced for how gross it was.” Oct 13, 2007 by
Paul from Aiea, HI
“Could be better. I would classify it as a one star hotel. Staff is good.” Oct 11, 2007 by
Marta from Normal, IL
“There was a sticky stain on the carpet and the entire room needed to be remodeled and cleaned. The pool was dirty. It was a very bad value for the price. It should be a 1 star.” Oct 5, 2007 by
Eunice from Chula Vista, CA
“Don't even consider this one! Although the staffs were all very friendly and helpful, there is no making up for the very poor condition of the building. I was not surprised to see a similar building there condemned! The grounds were so very spacious which can accommodate more than enough land to start building a new facility as remodeling the current one would obviously be more expensive, and Im a nurse, not a building contractor! In this room you will be greeted by a strong, foul odor, find a rusted wall air-conditioner, termite ravished painted walls, filthy flooring on which i insisted the boys wear their slippers at all times, non-functional knob locks replaced by just a chain lock, no electrical socket in the bathroom, thin, old towels. I can't write anymore as it brings back big time regret! Looks very inviting from the outside, but very, very disappointing, and this is coming from me, a bargain hunter who understands that we stay in hotels mainly just to shower and sleep.” Oct 4, 2007 by
Mary from San Dimas, CA
“Although the staff was awesome and the location was perfect, the hotel is not even close to a "resort". It is old and in serious need of a renovation. It was probably a lovely place 20 years ago, but little has been done to keep it up.” Sep 28, 2007 by
Ned from Aspen, CO
“It has seen better days and renovations are not at all likely, but it is spacious inside and out. Plenty of parking, big pool, flowers and birds everywhere, and away from highway noise. Walking distance to a fantastic Korean/sushi restaurant, and an easy drive to other beaches. More expensive Oceanside rooms are on a small beach, but also on highway; I don't know if traffic noise can be heard. Ignore the tired carpets and older bathrooms, and gloat over how much money you have saved when you talk to other folks in their high-priced high-rise tiny units nearby. I would rather spend my money doing other stuff on Maui.” Sep 25, 2007 by
Mona from Palatine, IL
“This hotel is right across the street from a beach and very near restaurants and shopping. The air conditioners were great because it is very warm in kihei and the beds were very comfortable. The hotel staff was terrific from porter to maid to front desk. The hotel was also very quiet. The ambience was like an olden Days hotel.” Sep 24, 2007 by
Tony from Vancouver, WA
“This is an older hotel. The room was frayed, and not just around the edges. However, the location of the room we got, 30 feet away from the Pacific on the 2nd floor, was excellent, and made it a great deal. It is certainly not spotless and shiny however, but dusty and faded. But if all you want is ocean, and you get lucky with the room, it could be a great deal.” Sep 19, 2007 by
David from Ewa Beach, HI
“The hotel has a lot of potential. Needs paint and some upgrades. But it was the dirtiest hotel I have ever stayed at. Fire the housekeepers!” Sep 16, 2007 by
Windy from Lake Havasu, AZ
“If there were some privacy walls to separate you from the next room and a cleaner room, I would have totally enjoyed by visit.” Sep 6, 2007 by
Jayne D. from Tampa, FL
“I like the emptiness of the hotel, but the location isn't that great.” Sep 2, 2007 by
Marianne from Calgary, AB CA
“Very friendly staff and beautiful grounds.” Aug 19, 2007 by
Corby from Eden, UT
“It actually exceeded my expectations. The grounds were large and spacious and the pool was awesome! The beach was easily accessible and the staff very accommodating.” Aug 4, 2007 by
Jerry from Honolulu, HI
“The hotel was in a great location in Kihei, right across from the beach and central to everything in Maui. The hotel was outdated but the staff was very friendly and considerate.” Aug 2, 2007 by
Bill from Greendale, WI
“For the location and price this property cannot be beat. Right on the ocean is one section and across South Kihei road is the garden and Mtn view rooms. It is older but the A/C works, the staff was very friendly, it was quiet and it suited my needs 100%. The rooms have refrigerators but no microwaves.” Jul 26, 2007 by
Denise from Epworth, GA
“The hotel was well marked and easy to find. Arriving at night, the open air lobby was pleasant, check in was easy and I got great directions to shopping and dining. Outdoor lighting is poorly designed, so it was a bit difficult to find my room. The room was horrible. Smelled and looked worn and dirty. The carpet was stained, all the finishes worn out, the bathroom finishes were all worn and chipped, the window air conditioner was noisy and barely worked, something was wrong with the television volume, a problem since the ac was so loud. I have never seen hotel walls painted such an ugly yellow. At least the sheets appeared clean and the refrigerator worked. This room was so disgusting that if I had not been traveling for 20 hours and it was earlier than 9:00 pm I would definitely have looked for other accommodations. The Aston Maui Lu does not merit a three star rating. I would not have been happy with this hotel at any price.” Jul 24, 2007 by
Fay from Mililani, HI
“Always wanted to stay at Maui Lu. Overall experience was good, but facility is older, and bathroom flooring needs new look. Peaceful, laid-back. Enjoyed my stay. That was much appreciated.” Jul 24, 2007 by
Jim from Honolulu, HI
“The Maui Lu is old time Hawaii. Relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The hotel reception building stands out from the road, atop a beautiful lawn hill studded with tall palm trees, and accented with lush tropical landscaping. The staff was eager to help and met requests with Aloha.” Jul 10, 2007 by
Ramona from Honokaa, HI
“When we checked in, they gave us the wrong key we could not get in.” Jul 2, 2007 by
Juha from Aiken, SC
“Great location at the north end of Kihei, Maui. Ocean front rooms (or actually suites) are large and the view is gorgeous. There is also a small beach in front of the hotel. Staff was friendly and helpful. Overall a great experience and very recommendable.” Jun 29, 2007 by
Traci from Mannford, OK
“I was very pleased with my stay at the Maui Lu; it was across the street from the beach. My room was very spacious and it had a refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker. The room had large windows with a great view. The hotel was decorated with great island flair! I felt like I was in a true bungalow. The room had a/c which is not the case in much of Hawaii. I would highly recommend this hotel to my friends and family.” Jun 23, 2007 by
Bill from Wahiawa, HI
“This place is horrible. The furniture is falling to pieces; the room smelled very bad, the carpet needs replacing. Honestly I think the place is full of termites and needs to be bulldozed. It is amazing how a company could let a facility fall into disrepair like this.” Jun 22, 2007 by
Mark from Whitefish, MT
“Rooms were clean, and the staff was friendly. The exterior of the buildings is in very poor shape, but all I needed was a cheap place to stay and a clean room, so I was satisfied.” Jun 21, 2007 by
Shannon from Wailuku, HI
“If you just need a basic, room-over-your-head type of place to stay; this will be fine as long as you check in before sunset. I ended up checking in close to midnight due to delays, and I was surprised that I was expected to check in at the front desk, and drive across busy South Khei road to get to the parking area for my room. I was also told that parking was limited there, and if need be, I could get back in my car, drive back across the street and park in a second parking lot (dark and scary looking) then drag all of my bags back across the street and up a flight of stairs to my room which was located on the second floor of a building with no elevator. Thankfully, there was a stall available in the first lot on my first try. Still, in order to switch rooms (albeit a better one), I had to drive back to the front desk and get the new keys, then drive back to my lot and get all of my things into my new room. All of this happened at about midnight, when I was tired and alone (my husband joined me on the second night). It was all just a bit too much. Although I would say the staff is professional, I would also say that the management must not care too deeply for the safety of women traveling alone because I was never offered any assistance in getting myself or my belongings into my room safely. I would never voluntarily stay here again.” Jun 15, 2007 by
Greg from Bountiful, UT
“This hotel was the "straw that broke the camels back" as far as my using price-line ever again. The quality that you deliver has gone down so much the past few years. I was ripped off on this one, and my memory is long.” May 22, 2007 by
Marci from San Jose, CA
“Upon check-in we were asked if we would like to upgrade to an ocean view room. We selected this option and were fortunate to be given the owner's suite. It was a wonderful room and we loved hearing the sounds of the ocean during the evening. We were disappointed at the state of the grounds. We were told there were tennis courts, but the supposed courts were being used for volleyball and not in good shape. There was supposed to be high speed internet available in the lobby, but this failed to work. If we had not been upgraded to a room on the opposite side of the street, I do not think we would have enjoyed our experience, but on the ocean site, it was great.” May 21, 2007 by
Rod from Kaunakakai, HI
“Worn out buildings and rooms. Rooms only offered with double beds. Unfriendly staff. I have stayed in two Aston hotels. Both experiences were poor.” May 6, 2007 by
Andrea from Westbury, NY
“It seemed abandoned; it had no restaurant nor was cafe, the closest public eatery 1 1/2 miles away. We walked and in route to eat, everything was vacation homes. The beach access across the street was also bare. Very scary! Rooms smelled like mildew, and sheets on bed looked as if they hadn't been changed in a while. The personnel said they were renovating, one building was obviously abandoned with broken windows. No one was keeping up the grounds, the only personnel seen was the person to check you in (1 person).” Apr 29, 2007 by
Crystal from Salt Lake City, UT
“Hotel was okay, especially for the price and the person that checked us in was very friendly. ” Apr 23, 2007 by
Felton from Newark, CA
“We ready enjoyed the stay. We will go back or tell other about the hotel.” Apr 12, 2007 by
Renee from Scottsdale, AZ
“It is a decent place to crash. I would not spend more time here than necessary though.” Apr 3, 2007 by
Sandi from Honolulu
“I traveled with 3 rowdy little boys. This place was perfect for us. There was nothing that they could break, and the beautiful spacious grounds (garden side) were perfect to let them run amok. The hotel itself is a little run down, but I usually get condos and spend the whole trip worrying about what my kids are going to break! Also, I like to run in the mornings and the grounds and adjoining neighborhood was perfect for that.” Apr 2, 2007 by
Wilfred N. from Stockton, CA
“My wife and I enjoyed the quietness and serene grounds. The aloha spirit was evident. The hotel has been at this location, since 1956/57. I remember it been there, growing up on Maui. Too bad the old units are no longer present as you enter the grounds. A few are there but not in use for guests. It would be a plus if the single type cabin/shacks could be revived.” Apr 2, 2007 by
Randall from Panola, TX
“Great value for the price. I would stay there again.” Apr 1, 2007 by
Joseph from Mableton, GA
“The bathroom floor flooded when the shower was used. A major renovation is badly needed. The staff was very friendly. Bottom line - we will not stay here again.” Mar 31, 2007 by
Leanne from Lindon, UT
“Nice location. Friendly staff. Across the street is the beach. That is what we came to see.” Mar 30, 2007 by
Gerald from Hana, HI
“Maui lu is in an extreme state of disrepair. Elevated wooden walkways are infested with termites and dry rot. This poses potential safety risks to all guests. Plumbing was also in poor condition.” Mar 29, 2007 by
Renna from Encinitas, CA
“It was not a 2.5 star hotel.” Mar 27, 2007 by
Stefanie from Waipahu, HI
“The hotel premises are appealing when you first turn in. However, on closer expectation, it's obvious that this is an older hotel and no one has taken the time to modernize it. Our room was pretty decent in size. There was a musty odor to the room, and most of the furniture, decor. On a plus side, you could tell housekeeping tried to do their best to keep the showers clean with minimal mildew. Personally, I did not feel comfortable walking barefoot on the carpet. Overall, if you're just looking for a place to sleep, this hotel is fine. It's a fairly far walking distance from the rest of the Kihei strip, but not a far drive.” Mar 26, 2007 by
Robyn from San Diego, CA
“Overall, I felt that I got a good for the stay. The grounds are large and beautiful and it is surprising that more wasn't done with it. Staff was friendly and helpful.” Hotel Representatives:
