• Friendly staff.
• Mouse in room. Cold air, cold pool, cold hot tub.

“We found a mouse in our room amongst our luggage! There was only cold air coming out of the heaters and we had the heat cranked up. The pool and hot tub were freezing. The hotel is in desperate need of renovations. Staff was nice, but we won't be staying here again.”

• It had heat and a roof.
• Lamp didn't work, no hot water in sink, bathtub filled with water while showering.

“To rate The Citadel Hotel 3 1/2 stars is a joke. The hotel is old and is in desperate need of renovation. To not even be able to wash your hands with warm water, is a complete disgrace. I would seriously consider lowering the rating.”

• Its location.
• The rooms have not been updated in 15 years and we found bed sheets with burn holes in them.

“This hotel should not be rated any higher than a one star rating. The front desk staff was not helpful at all. The beds have burn holes in the sheets and the bathrooms are in need of a major renovation. I will not be returning or recommending this hotel.”

• Carpets need upgrade.

“I was generally happy with the hotel. The location was first rate, the bed was comfortable (king) and my wife and I enjoyed our stay. Nice pool and exercise facilities.”

“Hotel had a great location near the citadel and close enough to walk to the harbor area shops and casino. The room was nice and clean, not much of a view on the street side but we could see the water at an angle out of the window. Would stay there again.”

• Restaurant seemed small and cramped-but help more than made up for it.

“High speed internet worked great, staff was friendly and helpful. I really liked that I was downtown but near the bridge too so I could come and go from the city easily.”

• Location, walking distance to all of downtown and the Citadel is next door.
• The room was in the old section and a bit run down. We paid for an upgrade into the newer section.

• Hallways dingy, dark, smelled of old smoke, poor air quality in room, stained carpets in room, dark material sprayed over ceiling, poor.

“Very disappointed, only stayed one night, couldn't wait to get out of there, poor air quality, dingy, old, smelled of old stale smoke, awful. Had out of town guest with me, could not return for second night that was booked.”

• I did not have a good experience at all here and would not like to stay in this hotel ever again.
• They were not organized at all.

“I had booked an additional night in the hotel. I stayed there for 3 nights when I checked in she said that I can keep the same room for the three nights I had asked specifically for a Queen bed. She said that she will make sure that I will get a Queen bed”

• The staff, especially housekeeping, were helpful and friendly.
• Never enough staff at the front desk, long waits.

“Located a 5 minute walk from the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site the Halifax Citadel Hotel is an older renovated hotel that is very adequate. Our rooms were a generous size and seemed to have been recently renovated. Bathrooms however are very small. The indoor pool and gym were being renovated during our visit in July, 2007.”

• Good location, pleasant staff.
• The room and bathroom insulation wasn't great, as one could hear other guests in rooms nearby.

“I definitely feel my experience here wasn't a 3 star one. We were put in the older part of the hotel. The carpets were stained and there were cigarette burns in places. The water pressure from the shower was weak. The room was of adequate size and the beds were satisfactory. The reception area of the hotel/lobby is overdue for a refit. For the price paid, I expected more.”

• Friendly housekeeping and desk staff, nice indoor pool hot tub and sauna.
• Web page gives an upper scale boutique hotel image (white linens etc.). Rooms more resembling of a cheap motel (lime green bedding, stained tub)

“Good location, friendly staff. a little cheap on the amenities, extra coffee in the room costs $2. Website is quite a bit misleading. Room was not what I expected after viewing their website.”

• nothing. This hotel was totally below expectation. The rooms looked like those of a cheap motel.
• Definitely not 3 star. Definitely not what the rooms looked like in the pictures.

“This hotel was ranked 3 star but i would consider it below 2 star. The room were so bad that i had to get my rooms changed. They moved me to a "better" room which was still not good enough or up to the 3 star level that i had booked. I can't believe i paid so much for the room. Will definitely not go there again and will not recommend anyone to go there and waste their money.”

• Location was convenient.
• The cleanliness of lobby and room were very poor. The sheets had not been changed on the pullout.

“I would not recommend this hotel to family, friends or business associates. The overall look and feel was of a run down property badly in need of an upgrade. The carpet, paint, hallways & rooms had the feel of a highway motel.”

• Great location which is central to all visitor sites including the waterfront.
• A little run down...needs a face lift.

“The staff was nice. This is about the third time that I have noticed this. You are also not told of the extra costs such as a daily parking fee and use fees for room Internet access. The hotel is in a good location but is pretty run down. Not at all what I would have expected for the price paid.”

“The location is next to the Citadel and convenient to the waterfront, downtown, and Spring Garden Road. The room was comfortable, the food was good, the restaurant service was attentive. The ambiance and decor of the hotel was a bit tired, but it was a pleasant and comfortable place to stay. I would stay there again.”

“This hotel is very well run and in central Halifax. There are two sections -- the older section is where we were put initially. The room was not very clean. We had a major issue with guests next to us and were moved to a superior room in the newer tower. Management was efficient and really with it. We were very impressed.”

• Downtown location. Large room with work area.
• Run Down. Needs renovations and upgrades.

“This hotel is starting to show it's age and the run down appearance is not acceptable for the stature the hotel is trying to maintain and the prices they are charging. While the downtown location is good and the room was large and well appointed the badly stained carpet is just unacceptable for a hotel like this. Not all the lights worked and the bathroom fan was not functional. There is way to much competition in downtown Halifax these days to allow your facility to become rundown and still charge top dollar.”

• It was near just about everything in the downtown.
• It was old, drabby and dirty with gruff staff.

“The location can't be beat, with a 10 minute walk or less to almost everything you would want, including the Citadel historic site, the waterfront, other downtown streets with shops, restaurants and pubs. A pedway is even across the street that allows you to get to the waterfront without going outside on wet or cold days. That's where the good at this hotel ends. It is drabby and dreary and does not have a clean, updated, fresh feel or look. It's just not the three stars that it is listed and is overpriced for what you pay.”

• The room was so cold that we couldn't stay, and relax. We then had no help from staff.

“Great location, but the staff didn't meet my expectations for the amount of money I paid. I feel that for the money I paid there should have been a little more help when it came to freezing room.”

“The Citadel is not a 3 star hotel. It is very rundown with substandard amenities. I have stayed in Holiday Inns that were brighter, cleaner and fresher.”
